WIldcat Earns Big 12 Freshman of the Week Honors

Kansas State’s Leticia Romero has earned the first Big 12 Freshman of the Week honor this season.basketball clip art two

For the weekend she averaged 20.5 points on a .765 field goal percentage, including a perfect 3-of-3 from beyond the arc, and a .750 free throw percentage ( 12-of-16 ).

Romero, a product of Las Palmas, Spain, helped Kansas State to a 2-0 start as the Wildcats defeated Tennessee State and Charlotte.

Mueller Named to Ted Hendricks Award Watch List

Kansas State junior defensive end Ryan Mueller has been named to the mid-season watch list for the Ted Hendricks Award.wildcat

He is one of three from the Big 12 Conference and 18 players nationally named to the watch list for the award which goes to the nation’s top defensive end.

The Ted Hendricks Foundation made the announcement.

Mueller is the first K-State mid-season candidate since Ian Campbell earned the nod in 2008. Campbell, who recorded a school-record tying 11.5 sacks in 2006 was also a preseason finalist in 2007 and a semifinalist in 2006.

Mueller is a two-time Big 12 Defensive Player of the Week honoree, and has a nation-leading 10.5 sacks this season.

Fan Appreciation Day Highlights TCU Game

MANHATTAN, Kan. – The K-State Athletics Department has announced details for Saturday’s anticipated sold-out  Fan Appreciation Day game against TCU to thank fans for their terrific support throughout the season.

The 2:30 p.m. game, which will be televised nationally on FSN, is expected to be K-State’s 12th-wildcatstraight sellout at Bill Snyder Family Stadium dating back to last season, and Wildcat fans are on pace to set new school records for total and average attendance for a season.

All fans will have the opportunity throughout the game to win prizes from K-State Athletics, Kansas City Marriott, Dillons, Briggs Auto, the Eye Doctors, Great Plains, Southwest Dairy, K-State Proud and the Kansas Soybean Commission.

A special concessions package that includes a hot dog and a soft drink or water will be available at all concession stands for just $5.

The K-State Super Store at the Stadium will offer discounted pricing on youth and adult t-shirts on select styles.  Saturday will also be one of the last chances for fans to purchase a ‘Fit for a Family’ t-shirt featuring the West Stadium Center for as low as $10 or a sweatshirt for as low as $25.

This weekend is another Wildcat Weekend with the defending Big 12 Champion K-State basketball team hosting Long Beach State at 3 p.m. on Sunday. Fans with a TCU football ticket can purchase a $10 basketball ticket, a savings of $5.

All fans who attend Saturday’s football game will also receive a one-time-use promo code for 10% off at the official K-State online merchandise store.

Fans are encouraged to tweet their Saturday tailgate locations pre-game using the hashtag ‘TweetYourTailgate’ for the opportunity to have a special visit from Willie Wildcat. Fans should also tweet their stadium seat locations using the hashtag ‘TweetYourSeat’ for the chance to have concessions vouchers and K-State prizes delivered to their seats.

While a sellout is expected, a limited number of tickets are available from the visiting team returns for $65 and are located in the southeast corner of the stadium.

K-State 2-0 in Women’s Basketball

Kansas State improved to 2-0 with a 73-65 women’s basketball victory over Charlotte ( 1-1 ) at Bramlage Coliseum Sunday.basketball clip art two

Freshman guard Leticia Romero led the Wildcats with 25 points, eight rebounds, and three assists.

K-State led by 24 points in the first half, but Charlotte rallied to within five points with under a minute to play in the game. The Wildcats hit five free throws in that final minute to secure the win.

Kansas State Picks Up Third Straight Football Victory

Kansas State rushed for 291 yards and five touchdowns, the defense had five sacks and came up with three turnovers as the Wildcats rolled past Texas Tech 49-26 in Lubbock Saturday.wildcat

The Wildcats scored 28 consecutive points during one stretch of the first half enroute to the victory, which left them 5-4 overall and 3-3 in the Big 12.

Ty Zimmerman returned an interception for a touchdown. The Junction City product now has 13 career interceptions at Kansas State, tying him for third all-time in KSU history with Dyshod Carter, who played for the Wildcats from  1997 to 2000.

John Hubert ran for 157 yards for the Wildcats in the victory.

Kansas State will host TCU at 2:30 p.m. Saturday at Bill Snyder Family Stadium. The Wildcats need one more win to become bowl eligible.

After the TCU Game K-State hosts Oklahoma and goes to Kansas to close out the regular season.

Manhattan to Host Derby

The Manhattan Indians will meet Derby  in the second ( sectional ) round of the Class 6A postseason playoffs.football clip art

The Indians will host the Derby Panthers Friday evening at Bishop Stadium.

Manhattan used a two-point conversion in the fifth overtime to get by Maize in the opening round of the playoffs 60-59.  Derby defeated Wichita North 56-7 to advance.

K-State Women’s Basketball Rolls by Tennessee State

Kansas State jumped out to a 40-19 halftime lead and never trailed enroute to an 85-53 wildcatseason opening basketball win over Tennessee State at Bramlage Coliseum Friday evening.

Kansas State got 16 points and seven rebounds from Leticia Romero, 15 points and five rebounds from Haley Texada, and ten rebounds plus five points from Breanna Lewis.

The Wildcats shot 52.5% from the field, 47.4% from three-point range, and hit 14 of 21 or 66.7% of their free throws.

Kansas State outscored Tennessee State 38-22 in the paint and 19-8 on fast break points.

Northern Colorado Upsets Kansas State

Northern Colorado of the Big Sky Conference spoiled the season opener for the Kansas ksu nc oneState Wildcats Friday night at Bramlage Coliseum with a 60-58 win over the Wildcats.

The Bears, who were 13-18 last season, but returned five starters,  out rebounded the Wildcats, held Kansas State to 33.9% shooting from the field, and hit 15 of 25 free throws compared to 16 of 33 for K-State.

KSU coach Bruce Weber said he had emphasized to his team how important the first game was, and how they needed to be ready and be prepared. “We have a saying in our locker room. It’s up on the wall. What’s greater, you’re excuses or your desire. And we have too many excuses and not enough desire.” Weber also stated that Northern Colorado out toughed and out competed the Wildcats. “You’ve got to give Barden so much credit. He just pumped us, had 16 and 17.

Derrick Barden finished with 16 points and 17 rebounds for the Bears.

K-State led at halftime 29-24 but Northern Colorado surged ahead in the second half before the Wildcats tied the contest at 51-51.

Missed free throws and a pair of key offensive rebounds by the Bears were factors in the outcome. Kansas State also managed to make just two of 19 3-point shot attempts in the ballgame. Northern Colorado was just 3-13 from 3-point range.

K-State post player Thomas Gibson did not play due to an injury. After the game Weber noted Gibson was dinged up, has been going through a battery of tests, but is back on the court. He stated Gibson’s playing status is  “day by day, game by game.”

The Wildcats host Oral Roberts Wednesday night.

Manhattan Advances in Playoffs

The Manhattan Indians scored on a two-point conversion in the fifth overtime to edge the indiansMaize Eagles in the first round of the Class 6A postseason playoffs at Maize 60-59.

Manhattan had rallied from a 24-7 early fourth quarter deficit to tie the game and force overtime.

In the fifth overtime Maize scored to take a seven point lead. Then the Indians put a touchdown on the board, went for two, and scored.

Manhattan improved to 8-2, while Maize finished the season at 7-3.
