Big 12 Announces 2014 Conference Football Schedule

The Big 12 Conference has released its 2014 football schedule. It will once again feature a 10-team, nine-game round-robin schedule.wildcat

Kansas state will open Big 12 play by hosting Texas Tech Saturday Oct. 4.

The Wildcats will play at Iowa State Oct. 11 and at Oklahoma Oct. 18 before hosting Texas Oct. 25 and Oklahoma State Nov. 1.

Kansas State will play at TCU Nov.8 before a bye week.  They will play at Thursday night game Nov. 20 at West Virginia.

The Wildcats will close out their Big 12 slate by hosting Kansas on Saturday, Nov. 29 and playing at Baylor Saturday Dec. 8.

KSU Football Team Tighter than Years Past

Many of the players on this year’s Kansas State football team haven’t had to face the adversity that this year’s team has had to go up against.

In their first eight games of this season the Wildcats are 4-4. The last time a KSU team went 4-4 through the first eight SNYDER 9-24games of the season was in 2008, Ron Prince’s final season as the KSU Head Coach. Starting in 2009 Head Coach Bill Snyder returned to the sidelines. In 2009 the Wildcats went 5-3 through the first eight games and the same in 2010. In 2011 the team went 7-1 and in 2012 the Wildcats were perfect through their first eight games.

B.J. Finney, Junior Center, said that after going 2-4 to start the season the team really needed to pull together in order to get back to 4-4,”The first six games not heading our way, being 2-4, we had to draw closer and tighter and we didn’t fall apart. We’re tighter than we have been in forever. We’re tighter than last year’s team for sure.”

He said that the team had to take it upon themselves to get the team going, “Now we have the opportunity to make it still something truly special for this season and we’re trying to work towards that.”

“Just the adversity that this teams faced it’s more than any of the teams that I have been a part of have faced. The guys underneath me, they haven’t been here. They haven’t faced that adversity. It’s been pretty smooth sailing for the last two seasons or even last season that they’ve been a part of.”

That adversity won’t change as the Wildcats will travel to Texas Tech Saturday for their first morning game of the season. The Red Raiders are 7-2 on the season, losing their last two to #17 Oklahoma and #18 Oklahoma State. They are under the direction of first year Head Coach Kliff Kingsbury.

Coach Snyder said during his weekly press conference Tuesday that going up against a new coach can be a little more difficult because of the newness and uncertainty.” You just don’t have that familiarity with the system. You don’t know what all is there. You haven’t seen it all over a period of time. Something new presents itself every week.”

Saturday’s game is scheduled for an 11:00 a.m. kick off and will be broadcast live on ABC.

Mueller Named Big 12 Defensive Player of the Week

Kansas State defensive end Ryan Mueller has been named the Big 12 Defensive Player of the Week.wildcat

In the 41-7 Wildcat win over Iowa State he registered seven tackles, including two tackles for loss and one sack. That allowed Mueller to take over the Big 12 lead in quarterback sacks.

K-State ( 4-4 ) plays at Texas Tech ( 7-2 ) this Saturday.

Kickoff Set for Kansas State – TCU Game

Kansas State’s Nov. 16 game against TCU at Bill Snyder Family Stadium is slated for a 2:30 p.m. kickoff.wildcat

Lawrence Free State won the girls 6A state team title, while Manhattan won the 6A boys title. Manhattan finished sixth in the girls team competition.

Cats Breeze Past Iowa State

Camouflage was prominent Saturday at Bill Snyder Family Stadium during the Wildcats 41-7 victory over Iowa State.

It was Fort Riley day and the Wildcats payed tribute to the troops by having camouflage powercat decals on their helmetsKSU V ISU ONE which is something that you wouldn’t normaly see out of a Bill Snyder led team. Coach Snyder generally doesn’t change the teams uniform away from it’s either home or away uniforms.

Snyder said that the idea to add the camouflage decals was brought to him by his son Sean Snyder, Associate Head Coach and Special teams Coordinator, and the teams equipment manager,”I thought it was a good a idea, I’m not all that fuddy duddy.”

Senior Safety Ty Zimmerman grew up around the military in Junction City and said being able to honor the military was huge,”I’ve had friends who’s families have been in the service and friends that are in the service right now so it’s definately a special time for us today and I’m glad they could come out and enjoy it.”

K-State’s defense started it off for the wildcats stopping the cyclones on the first drive of the game when ISU went for it on fourth down at the KSU 35 yard line and came up two yards short. The Wildcat offense took over on their own 27 yard line and 7 plays later John Hubert found the endzone on a 9 yard run.

The Wildcats added another field goal in the first quarter and Daniel Sams added a another Touchdown with :41 secondsKSU V ISU TWO left in the first half to go up 17-0 heading into half time.

K-State came out in the second half and put together a 9 play drive that ended in a 42 yard field goal by Jack Cantele. The Wildcats didn’t score again until 10:57 left in the 4th quarter on a 3 yard run by Hubert. K-State scored two more times in the 4th quarter going up 41-0.

Iowa State’s only time in the red zone came after the Cyclones recovered a Robert Rose fumble on the KSU 10 yard line. The Cyclones scored on the next play off of a 10 yard run by DeVondrick Nealy.

The Wildcats picked up their second conference victory and moved back to even on the season at 4-4. They travel to Texas Tech next weekend to take on the Red Raiders.

Blue Jays Defeat Indians

The Junction City Blue Jays left Manhattan Friday night with a 16-10 win over the Indians, and possession of the coveted Silver Trophy  which goes to the winner of the annual football game between the two schools.

Junction City broke a 10-10 tie on a seven-yard touchdown run by senior fullback Ron Wilson with 4:42 remaining in the fourth quarter. But Junction City missed the PAT try after the touchdown. The Indians then drove to the Junction City 10-yard line in the final two minutes, but a holding penalty on Manhattan brought the ball back to the Blue Jay 26-yard line. The Indians still had possession for two more plays but couldn’t pick up the first down or a score, allowing Junction City to run out the clock for the win.

Despite the win and the fact they finished tied with Topeka High and Manhattan at 2-1 in district play the Blue Jays do not get to advance to the Class 6A postseason playoffs, while the other two teams will move on. Junction City was left out of the postseason after losing the tiebreaker in the state’s 21-point tiebreaker system. Using marginal points involving the scores of the games in district play Topeka High was declared the district champion, and Manhattan was the runnerup. The top two teams advance to the playoffs.

After the game Blue Jay coach Randall Zimmerman was proud of his football team. On the range of emotions with the win, but also having to tell his team they do not get advance to the playoffs while the team they just defeated is getting to go Zimmerman said, “That’s tough. You should feel great about things, and down the road the kids will. We had so many seniors that just teared up.”

Junction City experienced a similar situation a year ago when they went 2-1 in district play and beat Manhattan,  but lost out to Manhattan and Topeka High on the state tiebreaker system and did not move on to postseason play.

Manhattan controlled the game early and jumped out to a 7-0 lead, and led at halftime 10-7 before the Blue Jays got things turned around in the second half. On the Blue Jay turnaround, Manhattan coach Joe Schartz said, “Well they did what they had to do and used their powerful offensive line against our small defense.  I’m very proud of our kids. They battled, they battled hard. It’s just a typical Junction City – Manhattan football game.”

Manhattan is 7-2 on the season while Junction City finished the season 6-3.

In the other district game Topeka High rolled past Washburn Rural 49-7.
