K-State Wins Baseball Home Opener

The Kansas State Wildcats ( 5-7 ) won heir home baseball opener at Tointon Family Stadium on Friday.baseball

K-State scored three runs in the first inning, and then held off the Iowa Hawkeyes ( 9-2 ) by a final score of  3-2.

The teams are scheduled to play again at 3 p.m. Saturday in Manhattan.

Jayhawks Defeat Wildcats in Big 12 Women’s Basketball Tournament

OKLAHOMA CITY (AP) – It took overtime for Kansas to oust in-state rival Kansas State in the opening round of the Big 12 women’s basketball tournament. Chelsea Gardner scored 29 points, including six in overtime. The Jayhawks won 87-84. big 12 basketball

Kansas advanced in the tournament to play top seeded Baylor on Saturday. In other first round action in the tournament on Friday TCU defeated Texas Tech. TCU will meet West Virginia in the second round. Other games in the tournament on Saturday find Oklahoma State against Iowa State and Oklahoma matching up against Texas.

Change for Chapman Boys Basketball

Chapman boys head basketball coach Tony Ingram, has resigned under pressure. He will leave the basketball clip art twopost after six years in the job.

Ingram confirmed he is leaving the program during an interview for KJCK AM, The Talk of JC’s Sports Saturday show. When asked about summer plans for the basketball program Ingram stated he would not be making those plans. “Not a me thing anymore. I wish them the best of luck. I think they’re going to be a good team here in a couple of years. ”

When asked what had happened, Ingram responded, “I’m resigning my position. Unfortunately it’s not necessarily something I wanted, but it is what it is at this point. And we’re having the opportunity to look elsewhere. I wish the boys the best of luck.”

The season ended for Chapman in the first round of the Class 4A Substate Tournament Friday night with a 39-32 loss to Clay Center.   Chapman struggled to a 2-19 record this season. Over the past six years their season records had ranged from 2-19 to 11-11.

Ingram stated his family appreciated those who have supported him through the six years, saying it had been a good run.  He praised the players he coached over the years, calling them a “great group of young men.”

Giants Down Royals in Spring Training Baseball

SURPRISE, Ariz. (AP) – Tim Lincecum pitched three strong innings and Hunter Pence homered baseballas the San Francisco Giants beat the Kansas City Royals 5-0 on Friday.

The two-time NL Cy Young Award winner is coming off his third straight losing season. The Giants re-signed him to a two-year, $35 million contract in the offseason. Lincecum allowed two hits in the first inning, including a leadoff double to Norichika Aoki, who was out trying to steal third.

Pence hit his first home run to center in the sixth off Wade Davis.

Tony Abreu, who played for the Royals in 2012, singled home Gregor Blanco in the third inning for the Giants. Joaquin Arias’ sacrifice fly in the second brought home Michael Morse with the first run.

Giants non-roster invitee Mark Minicozzi, who played for independent league teams from 2009-11, homered off Jon Rauch in the two-run ninth.

 

Shockers Roll by Evansville

ST. LOUIS (AP) – Cleanthony Early and Ron Baker scored 17 points apiece and No. 2 Wichita shockersState dominated on defense with Missouri Valley tournament-record 11 blocked shots, staying perfect for the season with an 80-58 romp over Evansville in the quarterfinals of the conference tournament on Friday.

D.J. Balentine had 31 points with seven 3-pointers for ninth-seeded Evansville (14-19), which lost twice by an average of 15 points to Wichita State (32-0) in the regular season.

Kadeem Coleby had six of the blocks for the Shockers, who are two wins shy of matching the NCAA record of 34 wins in a row by UNLV in 1990-91. UNLV was perfect before losing in the NCAA title game to Duke that season.

 

Royals Release Brad Penny

SURPRISE, Ariz. (AP) – Pitcher Brad Penny has been released from a minor league contract by the Kansas City Royals following a poor start to spring training.kcr two

The 35-year-old right-hander, an All-Star with the Los Angeles Dodgers in 2006 and 2007, gave up four runs and eight hits in two innings Thursday against the Chicago White Sox, who hit three doubles and a home run. He allowed 13 hits over four innings in two spring training appearances and had a 15.75 ERA.

Penny missed last season to rest his right shoulder after going 0-1 with a 6.11 ERA for San Francisco in 2012. he has a 119-100 record with a 4.26 ERA in 13 major league seasons.

He agreed in January to a contract that would have paid him a $1 million salary in the major leagues.

Hochevar Out for the Season

SURPRISE, Ariz. (AP) – Kansas City Royals right-hander Luke Hochevar will have Tommy John surgery that will sideline the pitcher for the season.kcr five

Hochevar felt a twinge in his elbow during a two-inning scoreless outing Monday against the Chicago White Sox. An MRI on Tuesday revealed the severity of the injury and it was confirmed Thursday by another doctor.

The Royals said Friday that Hochevar would have the surgery to replace a ligament in his elbow.

The 30-year-old Hochevar went 5-2 with a 1.92 ERA and two saves in 58 relief appearances last season. He was switched to the bullpen last year after going 38-59 with a 5.44 ERA in 128 career starts.

Hochevar was the first player picked in the 2006 draft. He will make $5.21 million this year and is eligible for free agency after this season.

 

The Pin’s Were Falling in Wichita Blue Jay Boys Take Third at State

The Junction City High School boys bowling team took third this year at the State Bowling Tournament in Wichita.

This years team of Michael Youngs, Kris Quidachay, Will Wriston, Aaron BLUE JAY BOWLINGCoffman, Ian Yeazell and Jayson Quicksall rolled a 2,699, just 14 pins out of second and 58 pins out of first.

“That beats our best by like 84 pins on a day,” said Brad Adams, Head Coach. “We were peaking at the right time.”

The team had three bowlers that placed in the top 20. Coffman placed 10th with a 681, Quicksall placed 12th with a 678, and Wriston finished 14th with a 672.

“Those are excellent scores and when you put three in the top 20, that’s phenomenal,” Adams said.

The Blue Jays won’t lose anyone to graduation this year either.

“No body’s leaving so we should be back already making projections for next year hopefully.”

Blue Jays Fall to Wichita Southeast

The Wichita Southeast Golden Buffaloes( 16-5 ) used a 15-0 run to begin blue jay logothe second quarter and rolled on to a 69-48 Substate Tournament basketball victory over the Junction City Blue Jays Thursday night.

The two teams met in the first round of the Class 6A Substate Tournament at Wichita Southeast.’

After trailing by 19 in the first half, and 12 points at halftime, the Blue Jays closed the gap to eight points in the third quarter. Southeast used another strong early in the fourth quarter to put the game away.

Jerrick Harding led the Golden Buffaloes with 21 points, including two three point baskets. Wichita Southeast hit a total of seven three-point shots in the first half but none over the course of the final two quarters.

Danny Thornton led the Blue Jays ( 6-15 ) with 11 points in the ballgame. The loss ended the season for Junction City.
