Johnson, DeVito to Miss Rest of Chiefs’ Season

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) – Pro Bowl linebacker Derrick Johnson and starting defensive tackle Mike football clip artDeVito will miss the remainder of the Kansas City Chiefs’ season after MRI exams confirmed that both players ruptured their right Achilles tendons in Sunday’s loss to Tennessee.

Johnson went down without getting touched near the end of the first half. Eight plays later, early in the second half, DeVito went down at nearly the same spot on the field.

The blows are significant to a Chiefs team that was already missing several key pieces to injuries and suspensions, and was routed 26-10 by the Titans at Arrowhead Stadium. Johnson had four tackles before getting carted off the field, moving him within 15 of 1,000 for his career. That would surpass Gary Spani for the franchise record.

K-State Football

AMES, Iowa (AP) – Kansas State certainly has its issues following a 32-28 win over Iowa State onwildcat Saturday.

It also has mental toughness and a star quarterback in Jake Waters – two things that could go a long way in the Big 12 this season.

The 19th-ranked Wildcats (2-0, 1-0 Big 12) allowed 28 straight points to an offense that scored half that many against an FCS team a week earlier. But they also held Iowa State scoreless in the second half, and Waters led Kansas State on an 80-yard, game-winning drive in just 91 seconds.

“There was a lot of character involved with playing the last five minutes of the game the way that they did,” Kansas State coach Bill Snyder said.

Kansas State’s strong finish was bookended by an encouraging start.

It was the middle of the game that got away from the Wildcats.

Kansas State needed just five plays to take a 7-0 lead, and it held Iowa State (0-2, 0-1) without a yard on its first series. The Wildcats then quickly drove to the Cyclones 10-yard line before stalling out.

Kansas State settled for field goals on back-to-back drives in the first quarter. It didn’t seem like a big deal at the time since the Wildcats held a staggering 171-9 advantage in yardage, but it would soon come back to haunt them.

“After the first drive, we turned around and have to kick two field goals. It was a 13-0 ballgame instead of a 21-0 game. That made a huge difference. I think that’s where the real letdown was, right there,” Snyder said.

Iowa State’s stops gave it hope that a comeback was still possible.

The Cyclones spent the next 15 minutes doing whatever it wanted against Kansas State’s inexperienced defense.

Quarterback Sam Richardson led Iowa State on an 85-yard scoring drive to end the first quarter. The Wildcats then let Jarvis West run a punt back 82 yards for a touchdown, and West’s perfect pass off to freshman Allen Lazard off a reverse put the Cyclones ahead 21-13.

Kansas State’s defense gave up its third touchdown in less than 14 minutes late in the first half, with DeVondrick Nealy capping a 75-yard drive on a short TD run.

But to its credit, Kansas State responded.

The Wildcats got a touchdown back before halftime and stuffed Iowa State on a 4th-and-1 in K-State territory to start the second half.

Kansas State outscored Iowa State 19-0 over the final 31 minutes, and Waters took control with his arm and his legs.

Waters threw for 239 yards and rushed for 138 more as the offense averaged nearly seven yards a play without turning the ball over.

“Another side of me kind of came out. I haven’t really shown that a lot. I just wanted it so bad,” Waters said. “I just knew that we had it in us.”

The Wildcats have a few extra days to sort out their defensive issues before their biggest test so far.

Auburn visits Manhattan on Sept. 18 in one of the marquee matchups of the young season.

“We had a lot of toughness to win a ball game and we didn’t quit. We finished like we wanted to,” running back Charles Jones said.

Royals Shut Out Yankees

NEW YORK (AP) – Yordano Ventura and the Kansas City Royals turned Derek Jeter Day into kcranother disappointing defeat for the New York Yankees’ captain in the dwindling days of his career.

Ventura pitched three-hit ball into the seventh inning, and the AL Central leaders beat the Yankees 2-0 Sunday on a pair of unearned runs for their second shutout in the three-game series.

Kansas City scored due to errors by pitcher Shane Greene (4-3) in the second inning and right fielder Carlos Beltran in the third. The Royals, who won 1-0 Friday night on an unearned run following an error by third baseman Chase Headley, went 4-3 against the Yankees this year to take the season series for the first time since 1999.

Kansas State Rallies Past Iowa State

AMES, Iowa (AP) – Jake Waters ran for an 8-yard touchdown with 1:30 left and 20th-rankedk-state football Kansas State rallied past host Iowa State 32-28 on Saturday.

Waters threw for 239 yards and ran for a career-high 138 yards for the Wildcats (2-0, 1-0 Big 12). They trailed by as much as 28-13 late in the first half before Waters rescued them on a game-winning drive.

Waters followed a key 23-yard completion to Tyler Lockett with a 25-yard run with just under two minutes left. Waters then capped an 80-yard drive that took just 1:31 with his second touchdown run of the day.

Jarvis West caught and threw touchdown passes and ran a punt back for a third TD for Iowa State (0-2, 0-1), which was held scoreless in the second half.

Blue Jays Open With Win

RANDALL ZIMMERMANThe Junction City Blue Jays rolled to a 27-0 first half lead, and went on to defeat the Highland Park Scots 48-12 in their season opening high school football game.

Fullback Downey Wood led the Blue Jays in rushing with 117 yards and a touchdown, while A-Back Jovan Baldwin rushed for 100 yards and two touchdowns.  Quarterback Tanner Lueker was 7-13 passing for for 162 yards and one touchdown for Junction City.

Blue Jay head coach Randall Zimmerman noted he saw some good things, and quite  a few things to work on. “Proud of our kids. A lot of our kids that were out there tonight, that was the first varsity experience that they’ve had. ”

The coach added there were some bright spots, and some frustrating things. He pointed to the hard play as a positive, but some early problems in the first quarter where the team did not convert into points. Zimmerman mentioned two dropped balls in the end zone, as one example.

Zimmerman said after that he felt like the team got better, noting they put together a couple of big drives.

The Blue Jays host Emporia next Friday ( Sept. 12 ).

Shields Pitches Royals Past Yankees

kcrNEW YORK (AP) – James Shields pitched two-hit ball into the ninth inning and Nori Aoki lined a run-scoring single in the third following Chase Headley’s two-base error, leading the Kansas City Royals over the New York Yankees 1-0 Friday night.

Shields retired 11 straight before Derek Jeter singled softly with one out in the ninth. Wade Davis relieved, and pinch-runner Antoan Richardson stole second before Gardner struck out swinging on a 3-2 fastball.

Randall Zimmerman
Randall Zimmerman

The Junction City Blue Jays open their football season at Highland Park Friday night.

Coach Randall Zimmerman has had been pleased with the defense in the first three weeks of practice. “We’ve got the experience there. We have six kids there returning with really good starting experience. Five of those kids started all year long. Three of those kids are all league kids. And we’re still young. Those kids are all young kids yet. ”

On offense there is more concern, mainly with the offensive line.

“Mainly because we’re so inexperienced and young on the offensive side. We’re trying to feel our way with our offensive line.”

The game Friday night ( Sept. 5 ) can be heard on KJCK AM, The Talk of JC with the broadcast beginning at 6:40 p.m.  You can also hear the contest at kjck.com. Dewey Terrill and Brian Field will broadcast the game.
