The Junction City Blue Jays rolled to a 27-0 first half lead, and went on to defeat the Highland Park Scots 48-12 in their season opening high school football game.
Fullback Downey Wood led the Blue Jays in rushing with 117 yards and a touchdown, while A-Back Jovan Baldwin rushed for 100 yards and two touchdowns. Quarterback Tanner Lueker was 7-13 passing for for 162 yards and one touchdown for Junction City.
Blue Jay head coach Randall Zimmerman noted he saw some good things, and quite a few things to work on. “Proud of our kids. A lot of our kids that were out there tonight, that was the first varsity experience that they’ve had. ”
The coach added there were some bright spots, and some frustrating things. He pointed to the hard play as a positive, but some early problems in the first quarter where the team did not convert into points. Zimmerman mentioned two dropped balls in the end zone, as one example.
Zimmerman said after that he felt like the team got better, noting they put together a couple of big drives.
The Blue Jays host Emporia next Friday ( Sept. 12 ).
