Blue Jay Soccer Team Wins

blue jay logoThe Junction City Blue Jay boys soccer team scored two first half goals and made them stand up in a 2-1 win over Topeka West at Al Simpler Stadium.

Blue Jay coach Drew Proctor felt his team played well the first 20 minutes of the match. “We struggled a little bit after that. Our attack was mediocre at times, but the first 20 minutes we looked fantastic. We were hitting balls in behind, we winning every 50-50, we were pressing high, we were defending and attacking on both sides of the ball very well.”

After a water break due to the hot weather, Proctor noted the Blue Jays seemed to slow down a little bit.

Junction City, 2-5, will play at Topeka High on Tuesday.

Royals Move Danny Duffy to Bullpen

kcr fourCLEVELAND (AP) – The Kansas City Royals have sent struggling starter Danny Duffy to the bullpen.

The left-hander hasn’t won since Aug. 25 and has gone six innings just once in his last six starts. Duffy lasted only 2 1-3 innings on Wednesday night, giving up four runs in a loss to the Indians. He’s 7-8 with a 4.35 ERA in 24 starts.

Royals manager Ned Yost didn’t hold back on his criticism of Duffy following his latest loss. He wants four consistent starters for the postseason.

AL Central-leading Kansas City is going through its roughest patch this season with nine losses in 12 games.

Yordano Ventura, who started Thursday against Cleveland, figures to be in the playoff rotation along with Johnny Cueto, Edinson Volquez and Kris Medlen.

Right-hander Jeremy Guthrie, who was moved out of the rotation in August, will take Duffy’s spot.

K-State Launches New Connectivity Network at Bill Snyder Family Stadium

BILL SNYDER FAMILY STADIUM THREE

MANHATTAN, Kan. – Fans attending Wildcat football games at Bill Snyder Family Stadium will benefit from a new connectivity network as K-State Athletics has partnered with leading companies Boingo Wireless on a new Distributed Antenna System (DAS) and Aruba Networks on a new Wi-Fi network for improved wireless service.

As part of its commitment to the Best Fan Experience in the Big 12, the new improvements were in place for the 2015 season opener for South Dakota, and all preliminary testing and results brought rave reviews from the sold-out crowd, the 21stconsecutive sellout at Bill Snyder Family Stadium.

“Providing both DAS and WiFi enhancements at Bill Snyder Family Stadium was a key component of our strategic plan and mission as we continue to provide the Best Fan Experience in the Big 12,” said Senior Associate A.D. for External Operations Scott Garrett. “We want our fans to have the best experience possible at our ballgames, and we feel like our partnerships with Boingo and Aruba are a terrific opportunity to further improve in that area.  We also thank Danny Fronce of K-State Network and Telecom Services for playing an important leadership role in managing this installation.”

The new DAS network will ensure fast and reliable cellular coverage both inside and outside the stadium. DAS coverage will extend to both the East and West parking areas, allowing fans to share their tailgate fun pre- and post-game.

The state-of-the-art neutral host network was designed to support multiple cellular carriers, to ensure that the maximum number of K State fans can enjoy robust cellular coverage as part of their existing carrier service plans.  The network currently provides enhanced cellular coverage for Verizon Wireless and T-Mobile customers.

“The Kansas State University and Boingo teams share a commitment to providing exceptional fan experiences on game day. The new DAS network at Bill Snyder Family Stadium was built with the fan in mind and is designed to scale as fans share their game day experiences, and as K-State rolls out new fan-focused mobile offerings,” said Nick Hulse, President of Boingo Wireless.
K State and Boingo will expand their DAS partnership later this year, with the launch of a new carrier-grade DAS network at Bramlage Coliseum.

The new WiFi service at Bill Snyder Family Stadium provides fans instant access to a second screen user experience with a 10 GB connection.  More than 380 access points have been deployed throughout the stadium which equates to approximately one access point per 130 fans.

“Providing pervasive, reliable and secure Wi-Fi is a high priority for large universities like Kansas State as they try to deliver the best possible experience for fans attending sporting and entertainment events in their athletic venues,” said Christian Gilby, Director Product Marketing, Aruba Networks, an HP Company. “With our portfolio of indoor and outdoor 802.11ac Wi-Fi access points, AirWave network management and ClearPass Policy Manager, Aruba is delivering the infrastructure that allows Kansas State to meet users’ mobility needs now, while ensuring a smooth path for future growth.”
Fans can easily access the WiFi network by following four easy steps:

–          Select “BSFS_WiFi” from available wireless networks listed on your device.

–          Open your web browser (ex: Safari, Chrome, etc.).

–          Navigate to any Internet page (ex: www.kstatesports.com)

–          Complete the network authentication process by filling out your name, email address, phone, and zip code.

Fans are encouraged to connect to the network as early on game day as possible, as load times for the network authentication process may be delayed at high traffic moments such as kickoff.  Fans should only be required to provide their authentication information once per season, per device.  For assistance, fans may visit the Fan Experience gazebo located on the south concourse near sections 18 and 19.

Among other new features for fans at the stadium this season is the new FREE K-State Gameday mobile application which is available for iPhones and Android Smartphones, enabling fans to utilize the new Wi-Fi connectivity to access all sport programs, live audio, video and real-time K-State social streams. The app is the ultimate guide for fans attending K-State games and includes interactive maps, fan guides, upgrades and more.

MANHATTAN, Kan. — In appreciation of their longtime support of both Kansas State University and K-State Athletics, Director of Athletics John Currie announced today that the Basketball Training Facility will be permanently named the Ice Family Basketball Center in honor of the Carl and Mary Ice Family following a recommendation from President Kirk Schulz and approval from the Kansas Board of Regents.

“Carl and Mary Ice are both very active K-State alumni who have generously established numerous scholarships and supported a myriad of programs across the university,” said Schulz. “By naming this state-of-the-art student-athlete facility the Ice Family Basketball Center, we are honoring a loyal K-State family commensurate with their dedication to Kansas State University.”

The $18 million facility and home of K-State men’s and women’s basketball, which opened in October 2012 and has been recognized nationally for its innovative design, will be named in recognition of Carl and Mary and their children, Marshall, his wife Megan, and Karen, as a tribute to their commitment to the university and K-State Athletics. The Ices have played key leadership roles in many of the department’s recent facility projects, including the West Stadium Center, Vanier Family Football Complex and the Basketball Training Facility.

“We are honored and humbled to have our family recognized in this manner,” said Carl and Mary. “Kansas State University has meant so much to our family and afforded us so many opportunities. The university and athletics department are in great hands thanks to the leadership of President Schulz, John Currie and all of our terrific coaches, and we look forward to being a part of many great years ahead.”

Native Kansans who currently reside in Westlake, Texas, Carl is the President and CEO of BNSF Railway and a 1979 graduate of the College of Engineering, while Mary is a 1980 graduate of the College of Human Ecology and earned a Masters from the College of Education. Together they serve on the Board of Trustees of the KSU Foundation and Carl is a member of the Foundation’s Board of Directors. Carl is also a past chair of the College of Engineering Advisory Council and a former member of the Industrial and Manufacturing Systems Engineering Advisory Council, while Mary is a member of the President’s Advisory Committee on Intercollegiate Athletics and the Ahearn Fund Advisory Group. She is a former member of the K-State Alumni Association Board of Directors and also served as president of the College of Human Ecology Alumni Advisory Board. Mary and Carl Ice Hall, the latest addition to the College of Human Ecology, was dedicated in 2013 in their honor.

“The Ices have played a critical leadership role in all of our recent facility projects, including the BTF, WSC and VFFC, and they have a deep heart and passion for K-State,” Currie said. “We appreciate their friendship and generosity as we continue to move forward in our goal of being a Model Intercollegiate Athletics Program.”
Their daughter, Karen, is an attorney residing in Manhattan and their son, Marshall (’03), and their daughter-in-law, Megan (’04) are also both K-State graduates.

“Carl and Mary have made a significant impact on our entire K-State campus,” head women’s basketball coach Jeff Mittie said. “Their generous spirit is what makes K-State such a unique and special place that unites all K-Staters.”

“We are proud to have the Ice family name on the training facility,” added men’s basketball head coach Bruce Weber. “They represent the epitome of true K-Staters – loyal, hard-working and generous with their time and support, which goes beyond the athletic department. Megan and I appreciate the friendship that we have been able to develop with Carl and Mary since we came to K-State and look forward to spending more time with them in the future.”

A formal naming ceremony of the facility will take place later this fall. Details regarding that event will be announced in the coming weeks.

NEW BRUNSWICK, N.J. (AP) — Rutgers has suspended football coach Kyle Flood for three games after he contacted a faculty member over a player’s status.
