In the postgame press conference following K-State’s 39-33 triple overtime victory over Louisiana Tech it was too soon for Bill Snyder to assess whether his Wildcat football team had taken a step forward.

On multiple occasions in regulation Kansas State had opportunities to put the game away or open up leads, but a fumble or a quarterback rushing play that came up just two or three yards short prevented that from occurring.

Snyder did say he was proud of his team, noting this group of young players have not been in that situation before. “They managed to carve their way through it. I’m not sure exactly how but they did. At least we’re 3-0.”

The K-State coach noted the Wildcats third down conversions “were horrendous. We were one out of in the first half and didn’t get much better in the second half. ”

This was the third overtime game in program history for Kansas State. The last one was a four-overtime contest on Nov. 12, 2011 at Bill Snyder Family Stadium when the Wildcats defeated Texas A & M 53-50.

Cook described the winning touchdown. “They stayed too high. They were in cover two a lot of the game, and we could recognize that. ” Cook added, “Thesafety opened up so I took it down the middle. I knew I was open, I just knew I had to get in, Joe ( Hubener ) put it on me, great ball, I did the easy thing catching it,Joe made a great throw.”

Hubener completed 15 of 26 passes for 195 yards in the win. He threw another TD pass in the first overtime, connnecting with Dominique Heath on a 22 yard strike in the back of the end zone. “It was a weird play, I don’t know. The defense played it weird, we ran it weird. He was there early and I was a little late on it, somehow it got through there and he caught it.”

Justin Silmon rushed for 119 yards on 24 carries for Kansas State, while Louisiana Tech completed 30 of 51 passes for 314 yards and one touchdown.

Also for Kansas State, Jack Cantele kicked four field goals, including a 44-yarder to tie the game in the second overtime, and force the extra session.

MANHATTAN -What was once a crowded field battling for the starting quarterback job at Kansas State has suddenly grown thin. After losing starter Jesse Ertz to a knee injury on the first possession of the opening game of the season against South Dakota, the Wildcats have now lost backup Alex Delton. The true freshman from Hays High reportedly injured his knee while closing out K-State’s victory at Texas-San Antonio on Saturday.

Omar Infante Has Big Night

kcr fourCLEVELAND (AP) – Omar Infante drove in a career-high seven runs and the Kansas City Royals overcame some early sloppiness for an 8-4 win over the Cleveland Indians on Thursday night.

Infante, a veteran infielder making his first start in 11 days, hit a three-run homer in the second inning off Corey Kluber (8-14), added a two-run double in the fifth after the Indians pulled their ace and a two-run single in the seventh.

Infante also had a sacrifice and nearly matched the offensive output of teammate Mike Moustakas, who set a team record with nine RBIs on Saturday against Baltimore. Needing a triple to hit for the cycle, Infante lined out to center field in the ninth.

Broncos Stun Chiefs

chiefs logoKANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) – Denver cornerback Bradley Roby returned Jamaal Charles’ second fumble 21 yards for a touchdown with 27 seconds remaining, completing a stunning comeback in the Broncos’ 31-24 victory over the Kansas City Chiefs on Thursday night.

Peyton Manning threw for 256 yards and three touchdowns, the last to Emmanuel Sanders with 36 seconds left as the Broncos (2-0) appeared headed for overtime. But on the next play by the Chiefs (1-1), Charles was stripped by Brandon Marshall and the ball bounced right into Roby’s hands.

The dramatic about-face came after Knile Davis gave Kansas City the lead with 2:27 left on an 8-yard run, raising hope among a sellout crowd that the Chiefs might finally end some curses.

Instead, Denver pushed its winning streak to seven straight over its AFC West rival, while Manning improved to 14-1 in his career against the Chiefs.
