Medlen Shines as Royals Blank Indians

kcr twoCLEVELAND (AP) – Kris Medlen pitched five-hit ball over 6 1-3 innings and Alex Rios hit a home run that launched some unintentional fireworks, leading the Kansas City Royals to a 2-0 win over the Cleveland Indians on Tuesday night.

Medlen (4-1) stifled the Indians before Royals manager Ned Yost turned things over to his top-ranked bullpen. Ryan Madson struck out two in the seventh, Wade Davis got through the eighth and Greg Holland worked around a two-on, no-out mess he created in the ninth for his 31st save.

Rios homered in the fifth inning off Josh Tomlin (5-2) for the Royals, who won for just the third time in 11 games as they close in on a probable AL Central title.

The Indians, who pulled back to .500 for just the second time since April by winning the series opener, fell to 13-6 since Aug. 25.

Kansas State Defense to be Tested by Louisiana Tech Saturday

Kansas State will wrap up their final non-conference game Saturday at Bill Snyder Family Stadium with Louisiana Tech.

The Bulldogs will be bringing with them a powerful offense with SNYDER 9-15senior transfer quarterback Jeff Driskel and senior running back Kenneth Dixon.

Through the first two games of the season Dixon has rushed for 274 yards and three scores, while Driskel has passed for 631 yards and six scores.

Coach Snyder commented on Driskel during his Tuesday press conference.

“You can just see him getting better and better, in only two games, but you can see the improvement being made. He’s comfortable with the offense. He throws the ball well, I mean he can get from here to there in a heartbeat. They throw the short game, but they throw the ball vertical downfield,” said Snyder.

On Dixon Snyder said he’s,”a very, very fine player. He can make that cut and make you miss.”

Kansas State’s defense has also been successful through the first two games of the season. So far they have allowed just a field goal last week against UTSA and shutout South Dakota during week one.

But that doesn’t mean they still have nothing to prove. The youth on the defense was one area junior linebacker Will Davis pointed out Tuesday,”they’re trying to prove themselves everyday, in the games, and in practice.”

Davis went on to say that the defense still made mistakes in the first two games that they need to improve on.

When it comes to Saturday’s matchup with Louisiana Tech stopping the run game will be important according to sophomore linebacker Elijah Lee.

“We’ve held each team under 50 yards of rushing, and whenever a team can’t rush then they have to raise their arm. Then we put good pressure on the pass rushing and that just gives them problems,” said Lee.

Saturday’s game is scheduled for a 2 pm kick off. You can hear the broadcast of the game starting with pregame at 12 noon, on the “Talk of JC” 1420 AM KJCK.

Texas Athletic Director Steve Patterson Fired

BIG 12 LOGOAUSTIN, Texas (AP) – A person with direct knowledge of the decision says Texas athletic director Steve Patterson has been fired.

The person spoke Tuesday on condition of anonymity because the school had not announced the move.

Patterson was let go after just two years. In that time, the storied football program has changed coaches but is still struggling. He has also clashed with fans over increased ticket prices and a “loyalty” system that angered longtime season-ticket holders.

He also raised eyebrows with an aggressive move to raise money for the nation’s wealthiest athletic department.

Royals Lose Series Opener at Cleveland

kcr fourCLEVELAND (AP) — Carlos Carrasco’s first pitch couldn’t have gone any worse, but he quickly took control Monday night.

Carrasco overcame Alex Gordon’s home run to throw six strong innings, and the Cleveland Indians beat the Kansas City Royals 8-3.

Lonnie Chisenhall drove in three runs for the Indians, who trail Texas by 4 1/2 games for the AL’s second wild-card spot. Cleveland, which has won 13 of 18, also got back to the .500 mark (71-71).

Carrasco (13-10) had a simple strategy after Gordon’s drive landed deep in the seats in right field, the only run he allowed:

“Right away, I was thinking those guys were going to be aggressive,” he said. “It made me feel more aggressive, so I went after them harder.”

“The first pitch of the game, you’re already like, `Here we go,” manager Terry Francona said. “But once he established and got into the game, and fortunately did it right after that, he started throwing one of the better breaking balls he’s had.”

The right-hander struck out nine in his second start since coming off the disabled list with a sore right shoulder.

Carrasco got some quick help when Jason Kipnis led off the Indians’ first with a home run.

“It’s always better to play with the game tied,” Francona said. “Three hours later, it may not make that big a difference. It’s just a better feeling.”

Giovanny Urshela hit a solo homer in the fourth for Cleveland.

Edinson Volquez (13-8) allowed four runs in five innings for Kansas City, which has lost eight of 10, while Gordon was 4 for 5.

“I thought he was OK,” Royals manager Ned Yost said of Volquez. “Tonight was just one of those nights. He couldn’t keep it going.”
