Winless Jayhawks Lose Top Two Quarterbacks to Injuries

jayhawkLAWRENCE, Kan. (AP) – Kansas quarterback Montell Cozart is out with a shoulder sprain and Deondre Ford is done for the season with a thumb injury, forcing freshman Ryan Willis to start Saturday’s against No. 3 Baylor.

Jayhawks coach David Beaty made the announcements Monday.

The Jayhawks (0-4) also lost top quarterback Michael Cummings to a season-ending knee injury during the spring game. Cozart was injured in last Saturday’s loss at Iowa State, while Ford was hurt in a game at Rutgers, when Cozart was already sidelined by an illness.

Willis filled in for Cozart on the final few series against the Cyclones, going 8 of 16 for 100 yards. Before that game, his only experience was two plays in the opener against South Dakota State.

The Bears (4-0) were already 42-point favorites.

Chiefs Fall to Bengals

chiefs logoCINCINNATI (AP) — Andy Dalton added to his streak of impressive game and big plays, throwing a 55-yard touchdown pass on the run, and the Cincinnati Bengals stayed unbeaten with a 36-21 victory over the Kansas City Chiefs on Sunday.

The Bengals (4-0) matched the third-best start in franchise history, two wins shy of the club record.

Dalton has been the thread throughout the wins, ascending to the top of the AFC passer list. He had another spot-on day, completing 17 of 24 for 321 yards with the long touchdown pass to Brandon Tate during a scramble.

It was another rough day all around for Kansas City (1-3). Alex Smith was sacked five times, the Chiefs settled for Cairo Santos’ club-record seven field goals, and the defense couldn’t keep up with another one of the NFL’s top passers.

Royals Secure Home Field Advantage Throughout Playoffs

kcr fourMINNEAPOLIS (AP) – Salvador Perez added to his career-best home run total, Johnny Cueto tossed five solid innings and the Kansas City Royals secured home-field advantage throughout the postseason by beating the Minnesota Twins 6-1 on Sunday.

Perez hit his 21st homer in the third inning, one behind Kendrys Morales and Mike Moustakas for the team lead.

Cueto (4-7 with Royals, 11-13 overall) allowed one run over five innings, helping the Royals finish on a five-game winning streak.

The right-hander, whose transition to the AL since a trade from Cincinnati has hardly been smooth, surrendered six hits and four walks. Cueto struck out the last two batters to leave the bases loaded in the fourth after giving up an RBI single to Danny Santana.

The defending AL champion Royals (95-67) posted their best regular-season record since the 1980 team went 97-65.

Ricky Nolasco (5-2) started for the Twins for the first time since May 31 and lasted only 2 2-3 innings.

Myrissa Humphreys led the Junction City Lady Jays in the JCHS cross country invitational at Milford State Park Saturday with a fifth place finish in 19:47.2.

Humphreys wanted to get off to a good start in the race. “Get into a good pack that would carry me to the one mile because coach always says that the one mile, where you are then is pretty much where you’re going to finish. So I just wanted to get in a good place then.”

Fifth place in a 10-team meet is a good finish. “Yeah it is, I tried to get that 4th but it kind of slipped away from me. But I’m verry happy with fifth place.”

Briona Jensen of Junction City finished 13th 10:55.6.

The top individual runner was Gabriela Reyna of Manhattan in 18:51.8.

Blue Jays Remain Unbeaten

blue jay logoThe Junction City Blue Jays ( 5-0 ) overcame a halftime deficit to defeat the Washburn Rural Junior Blues ( 4-1 ) 36-13 in high school Friday night.

The game pitted two unbeatens at 4-0.

The Blue Jays got on the board first on their opening series with a 52-yard drive capped off by a 3-yard touchdown run by Raye Wilson with 9:28 remaining in the first quarter. After a penalty on Washburn Rural the Blue Jays went for two on the extra-point try and successfully completed it on a run by Darius Hicks.

But Washburn battled back, and then took advantage of two Junction City mistakes in the second quarter. Following a Blue Jay fumble, the Junior Blues got the ball at the Blue Jay 11-yard line, and three plays scored a touchdown with 9:40 remaining in the first half, kicked the extra point to make it 8-7 Junction City.

Then Washburn Rural blocked a Blue Jay punt with 8:43 remaining in the second quarter and recovered the ball in the end zone to go ahead of Junction City 13-7. The PAT try was blocked.

In the second half Junction City used a powerful running game to score four touchdowns, one coming after a Blue Jay fumble in Junior Blues territory. A big play in the second half was an interception by Christian Ozores to the Washburn Rural three yard line. On the next play Darius Hicks ran into the end zone from three yards to score a touchdown.

The Blue Jays play at Manhattan next Friday night. The Indians are 4-1 after a 50-7 win over Topeka West.
