football clip artFormer Manhattan High School head football coach Lew Lane will be honored Friday night at halftime of the MHS football game against the Junction City Blue Jays.

Mike Marsh, Athletic Director, said they’ll recognize Lane’s accomplishment during his time as head coach. “During that process we’re also going to recognize his assistant coaches that are able to attend that evening as well. Manhattan High football alumni are invited back to attend that game as well to view and be a part of that program.”

Lane enjoyed a great deal of success during his time as head football coach, guiding the Indians to numerous district and league titles. His 1988 squad captured the Class 6A state championship.

Marsh stated it will be called “Bishop Stadium at Lew Lane Field.”

Marsh played quarterback for the Indians on Lane’s 1980, 81, 82 team. “He’s a great motivator. He was just a great leader of people and kids.”

Royals Go With Speed Over Power In ALDS

kcr fourKANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) – The Kansas City Royals are going with a speedy roster for their AL Division Series against Houston, including pinch runner Terrance Gore at the expense of outfielder Jonny Gomes.

The Royals acquired Gomes from the Atlanta Braves late in the season. But while Gomes excels against left-handed pitchers, and the Astros are starting lefty Scott Kazmir on Friday, Kansas City manager Ned Yost elected to go with a more versatile lineup.

That means Gore, a career minor leaguer, gets another postseason call. He was part of the bunch that rolled to the World Series a year ago.

There were no other surprises on the Royals’ 25-man roster Thursday. They kept 11 pitchers, including Yordano Ventura, Johnny Cueto and Edinson Volquez, who will start the first three games.

Royals to Meet Astros in ALDS

kcr twoNEW YORK (AP) – It will be the Houston Astros against the Kansas City Royals in the American League Division Series.

The Astros have advanced by knocking off the New York Yankees 3-0 in the wild card game in the Bronx. Dallas Keuchel (KY’-kuhl) worked six shutout innings and the Astros hit a pair of solo homers in their first postseason victory since Game 7 of the National League Championship Series.

Keuchel was in command most of the night despite pitching on three days’ rest. The 20-game winner gave up just three singles and a walk while fanning seven. He got into trouble just once, when he put runners on first and second with two out in the sixth before getting Alex Rodriguez to hit a soft fly ball to center field.

Keuchel never gave up a run in 22 innings against the Bombers this season. He allowed just nine hits and a walk in 16 innings during his two starts versus the Yanks in the regular season.

Colby Rasmus put the Astros ahead to stay with a second-inning homer before Carlos Gomez went deep off starter Masahiro Tanaka (mah-sah-HEE’-roh tah-NAH’-kah) in the fourth. Tanaka allowed two other hits in his five innings of work, but the Yankees couldn’t touch Houston’s bullpen.

Injuries Plague Wildcats on Both Sides of Ball

Players at Kansas State University who were expecting to red-shirt this football season may end up having the red-shirt status pulled so that they can play if injuries continue to plague the football team.

It’s apparent that Kansas State has not had the best of luck this SNYDER 9-15season when it comes to injuries, losing their starting quarterback on the first play of the first game earlier this season. Since then the Wildcat’s have lost their number three and number four quarterback which led to wide receiver Kody Cook coming in and playing a few series last weekend against Oklahoma State when the now starter and previous number two quarterback Joe Hubener was injured, Cook would later leave the game with a shoulder injury bringing Hubener back in.

The injuries aren’t just on the offensive side of the ball either, as the defense lost starting safety Dante Barnett in the first game of the year, and appear to have lost back up cornerback Cre Moore who was arrested this past weekend on suspicion of driving while under the influence of drugs or alcohol.

To fill all of those positions Kansas State has taken a closer look at this years freshman class according to Coach Bill Snyder.

“We have worked a number of young guys that are freshman, first year freshman, into our team periods. So consequently we’ve prepared guys if indeed we were to have some of the issues that we’re having right now,” said Snyder. “It’s certainly a possibility. We’ve had a number of young guys, both sides of the ball, prepare if we have to.”

With Kody Cook’s status unclear the next quarterback on the roster would likely be true freshman Zach Davidson.

“You have no options, and that’s not going against anything Zach does, Zach’s just young and inexperienced in the offense. He’s still got a lot to learn, we just have to do a good job of being able to define all of the things that he can do and does do well and has a good grasp of and make sure we don’t get out of that box, so to speak.”

Kansas State continues its tough conference stretch this Saturday when #2 ranked TCU comes to Bill Snyder Family Stadium ranking second in the Big 12 in scoring offense, passing offense, total offense and passing efficiency.

Saturday’s game will kick off at 6:30 pm and will be shown to a national audience on FOX. You can also catch the game on the “Talk of JC” 1420 AM beginning with pregame at 4:30 pm Saturday afternoon.

Royals to Give Yordano Ventura Start In Game One of ALDS

kcr fourKANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) – The Royals will start hard-throwing youngster Yordano Ventura in Game 1 of the AL Divisional Series, regardless of whether Kansas City plays the Yankees or Astros on Thursday night.

Royals manager Ned Yost announced his starter before Tuesday’s workout at Kauffman Stadium. Johnny Cueto will pitch the second game and Edinson Volquez will start Game 3.

The 24-year-old Ventura weathered a rollercoaster year that saw him briefly shipped to Triple-A. But the star of Game 6 of last year’s World Series has rebounded down the stretch, going 4-1 with a 3.14 ERA in seven starts in September.

Cueto is 0-2 with a 5.19 ERA in three postseason starts, all with Cincinnati. Volquez is 0-2 with a 12.15 ERA in two postseason starts with the Reds and Pirates.

Washburn Rural won the championship (80 points), followed by Shawnee Heights (75 points), Emporia (70 points) and Seaman (69 points).   The Lady Jays other doubles team of Abby Khoury and Jordan Dombrowski finished 16th, while Nea Misa and Abigail Weisler finished 15th and 16th in singles.
