K-State Upset Bid Falls Short

The Kansas State Wildcats ( 3-2, 0-2  Big 12 ))led second-ranked TCU by 18 points at halftime Saturday night at Bill Snyder Family Stadium, 35-17, but the Horned Frogs roared back with 35 second half points to defeat the Wildcats 52-45.

K-State faced a fourth and one at the TCU ( 6-0, 3-0 ) with 1:52 remaining and down three points 45-42. The Wildcats took a timeout and then opted to have Jack Cantele try a field goal, which he successfully kicked to tie the game at 45-45.

Two plays into their next offensive series Horned Frogs quarterback Trevone Boykin completed a 55-yard pass to Josh Doctson for what proved to be the winning touchdown. Kansas State quarterback Joe Hubener was asked if he wanted the Wildcats to go for it on the fourth and one. “I wanted to go for it but that was the coaches call, and they felt our defense had the ability to hold them up, and they thought kick the field goal, hold them up, and go into overtime.”

On the field goal decision Bill Snyder stated, “Well, the options were run the ball or throw it, and we kicked the field goal. Obviously, the field goal was the wrong thing to do. But, that was one of those choices.” Snyder noted on the field goal choice, that it was a hard choice.

Earlier in the fourth quarter Boykin ran 69 yards for a TCU touchdown as well. He threw for 301 yards and touchdowns, and ran for 124 yards and two scores in the game.

Gary Patterson, TCU head coach, gave Kansas State credit. ” I mean the first half they kicked our butts, to be honest with you. I told our group how it was going to be if they came here and what it was like to play in Manhattan, Kansas and they didn’t believe me. Now they believe me.”

Patterson added he was proud of his group, noting they got defensive stops in the second half, a big interception for a touchdown, got a stop on K-State’s last drive, stops inbetween, and offensively did what they had to do.

Attendance for the game was 53,671.

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — Ben Zobrist hit a go-ahead single in the seventh inning, reliever Wade Davis got replay help for a key pickoff in the ninth and the Kansas City Royals rallied from a three-run hole to beat the Houston Astros 5-4 on Friday, evening their AL Division Series at a game apiece.

Kansas City took the lead when Alcides Escobar tripled off Will Harris (0-1) to open the seventh and Zobrist followed with his single through the left side.

Kelvin Herrera (1-0) and Ryan Madson each tossed a scoreless inning of relief for the Royals, and Davis came on to close it.

Davis walked Preston Tucker with one out. Pinch-runner Carlos Gomez was initially ruled safe when he made a dive back into first base, but the call was overturned upon review. Davis got Jose Altuve to ground out to end it.

Game 3 is Sunday at Houston. Astros ace Dallas Keuchel, who was 15-0 at home this season, starts against Edinson Volquez.

Blue Jays Win!

The Sportsman Trophy - Silver Football - goes to the winning team...this year Junction City.
The Sportsman Trophy – Silver Football – goes to the winning team…this year Junction City.

Wayne Shirley kicked a 27-yard field goal in overtime to lift the Junction City Blue Jays to a 17-14 victory over the Manhattan Indians at Bishop Stadium.

Shirley’s game winning kick after the Blue Jay defense stopped Manhattan on fourth and inches at the goal line. Junction City took over control of the football, ran three plays, and then brought Shirley in for the final kick.

On the fourth down play at the goal line there appeared to be a fumble by Manhattan, the Blue Jays picked up the football and began returning it for a score, but the officials ruled the ball down.  So Junction City then ran three plays before kicking the final field goal.

The postgame comments of the two head coaches: Randall Zimmerman of Junction City: “They weren’t in. The ball was behind the offense. ” Zimmerman added his team scooped up the loose football and scored but the officials didn’t see it.

Manhattan coach Joe Schartz felt his team scored on the fourth down play at the goal line. “We scored, six inches and we got two feet. We were in. The ball should have been dead at that point. As Ian was in the pile after he had already scored, he was trying to make sure that he scored and he reached the ball out and that’s when it came loose.”

The win secured Junction City at least a tie for the Centennial League championship. The Blue Jays are 6-0 while Manhattan fell to 4-2.

McHugh Pitches Astros to Win over Royals

kcr fourKANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) – The Houston Astros beat the Kansas City Royals at their own game Thursday night, relying on sharp pitching from Collin McHugh and stingy defense behind him for a 5-2 victory in the opener of their AL Division Series.

McHugh (1-0) allowed four hits, including a pair of solo homers by Kendrys Morales, while pitching around a 49-minute rain delay. The right-hander lasted six innings before turning the game over to his bullpen, which scattered just three runners over the final three frames.

Tony Sipp, Will Harris and Oliver Perez got the game to Luke Gregerson, part of Oakland’s wild-card collapse in Kansas City last year. He handled the ninth to earn the save.

George Springer and Colby Rasmus went deep for the homer-happy Astros, but they also scored via the same sort of small ball the Royals used in reaching the World Series last season.
