JCHS Golfer Sixth at State

blue jay logoJunction City High School senior Madison Roether finished 6th in the Class 6A Girls State Golf Tournament on Monday.

Coach Tim Hickert said Roether shot a round of 83, six strokes out of first place in the competition at the Terradyne Country Club golf course in Andover. Hickert said putting was the strength of Roether’s game on Monday. “She made a whole bunch of four and five-footers. We saw some four-putts, five putts, even a six-putt. It was windy, tough greens, and she just continually made putts over and over again.”

Mia Toukach of Gardner Edgerton finished first in the individual competition with a round of 77.    Macie Myers of Manhattan finished fifth with an 81.

In the team competition Shawnee Mission East captured the title with a total low score of 341. They were followed by Washburn Rural with a score of 363, Blue Valley West 373, and Manhattan was fourth at 374.  Roether was the only golfer in the tournament for Junction City.

Vikings Hold On for Win Over Chiefs

chiefs logoMINNEAPOLIS (AP) – Minnesota’s defense and rookie wide receiver Stefon Diggs bailed out Teddy Bridgewater for an erratic performance, and the Vikings held on to beat the mistake-prone Kansas City Chiefs 16-10 on Sunday.

Alex Smith’s 42-yard touchdown pass to Albert Wilson midway through the fourth quarter pulled the Chiefs within three points, but the Vikings (3-2) played well enough early to survive their ragged finish.

Charcandrick West, one of their replacements for the injured Chiefs star Jamaal Charles, lost a fumble down the stretch. The Chiefs (1-5) had eight penalties enforced for 95 yards.

Diggs had 129 yards on seven catches on a day when Bridgewater threw two interceptions. Adrian Peterson, who was on the sideline late in the game with the Vikings trying to put it away, finished with 60 yards on 26 carries.

Royals Chris Young to Start Game Four of ALCS

kcr fourTORONTO (AP) – Royals manager Ned Yost has chosen Chris Young over Kris Medlen as his starter for Game 4 of the ALCS.

Young has only made two starts since July 28, but they were good ones. He allowed one run in 11 1-3 innings over those two outings, with his final start coming Oct. 2.

The 6-foot-10, third-round draft pick out of Princeton in 2000 appeared as a reliever in Game 1 of the ALDS, giving up a run in four innings. Overall, he was 11-6 in 34 appearances – 18 starts – this year.

Young faced the Blue Jays once this year, a 7-5 loss on July 11. Edwin Encarnacion hit a two-run shot and Young yielded five hits and three runs over six innings. But over his 11-year career, Young has held current members of the Blue Jays to a .229 average (22 for 96) with two homers.

Sooners Faced Lengthy Delay in Getting to Manhattan

According to media reports the Oklahoma Sooners faced a lengthy delay of more than eight hours in getting to Saturday’s football game against Kansas State because of a late arriving plan, and mechanical issues involving that plane that was supposed to transport them to Manhattan. Eventually there were issues with other backup planes that were to be used before the team finally boarded one and made it to Manhattan.

But in the end it didn’t seem to matter to OU, since they routed Kansas State 55-0 at Bill Snyder Family Stadium.

Oklahoma coach Bob Stoops said the Sooners left their facility at two p.m. Friday to go to Oklahoma City ( Will Rogers Airport ) and then take a 40-minute flight to Manhattan. “We didn’t walk into our hotel room until about 12:15 in the morning.” The Sooners had waited at the airport for several hours. “You get reports the plane is going to be here in an hour, one is going to leave Houston in a half-hour, and that changes every hour, is different, and it doesn’t happen.”

Stoops noted by about 8 p.m. the players had not eaten. So staffers and supporters with cars available were asked to go to fast food restaurants to bring back food, “Kind of potluck fast food, try and get 10 burgers, 10 tacos, if we had 10 people get ten whatever, we’d feed our players. And that’s exactly what we did.” Stoops said the Sooners then had their meal potluck. ”

Stoops joked, “Now the players want it every week, so I don’t know if that can happen.”

OU Races Past Kansas State

Bob Stoops
                                         Bob Stoops

The Oklahoma Sooners ( 5-1, 2-1 Big 12 ) racked up 568 yards total offense, scored seven touchdowns, and kicked two field goals enroute to a 55-0 beat-down of Kansas State on Saturday at Bill Snyder Family stadium.

It was the first shutout loss for Kansas State since a 12-0 loss at Colorado in 1996, and the first in Manhattan since a 10-0 loss to Colorado in 1991.

OU coach Bob Stoops said his team responded after their loss to Texas one week ago. “They came out Monday just really fired up, energetic, and it carried through the week. We executed really well, give them the credit, the players, the execution was maybe as good as we’ve had.” During Stoops’ time as coach, the Sooners have not lost back to back games since consecutive losses to Notre Dame and Texas in his first season at OU in 1999.

K-State coach Bill Snyder commented on the toll two close losses in the last two weeks had on the Wildcats. “It is probably obvious that it has taken its toll. I think all of us are embarrassed. I cannot remember being involved in a game like this since 1989 in the first year that we were here. I do not even know if we had one that bad during that first go around. I am not really smart enough to put my finger on it.” Snyder added, “I feel badly for the guys in the locker room, but we were not as prepared to play. It is more than just the emotional preparation as well.”

Attendance for the contest was 52,867. Many fans left early.

K-State ( 3-3, 0-3 Big 12 ) plays at Texas next Saturday.

Texas Tech Holds Off Kansas

jayhawkLAWRENCE, Kan. (AP) – Patrick Mahomes threw for 359 yards and a score, De’Andre Washington rushed for 160 yards and a TD and Texas Tech held off a late-charging, winless Kansas team 30-20 on Saturday.

The Red Raiders (5-2, 2-2 Big 12) racked up 225 yards rushing and a touchdown on the ground. Texas Tech’s 30 points were the least amount the team has scored all season.

Five different Texas Tech offensive playmakers recorded over 50 yards receiving. Zach Austin led the Red Raiders with 80 yards receiving, Jakeem Grant had 76 yards, Devin Lauderdale had 50, Cameron Batson, 58, and Reginald Davis, 57 yards and a score.

Texas Tech continued its streak of perfection, as the Red Raiders are 9-0 inside Memorial Stadium, a record dating to 1966.

Kansas (0-6, 0-3) is riding a nine-game losing streak and is 0-6 for the first time since 1988.
