Royals Take 2-0 Lead over Toronto

kcr twoWade Davis puts the first two runners on in the 9th but finishes off the Royals’ 6-3 win over the Blue Jays for a 2-0 lead in the best-of-seven ALCS. Game 3 is in Toronto on Monday night.

The Royals finally broke through against David Price, rallying to take the lead in the seventh by batting around. The surge started when Ben Zobrist hit a shallow pop fly to right that second baseman Ryan Goins, running back, appeared to call for. Jose Bautista started to slow up but Goins, perhaps distracted by the loud crowd noise, stopped and slid to the ground as if he was ceding to the outfielder. Instead, the ball fell in for the Royals’ first hit since Alcides Escobar singled to lead off the first.

Eric Hosmer, Kendry Morales, Mike Moustakas and Alex Gordon each drove in a run before Price was pulled. Alex Rios drove in one more run with a single off Aaron Sanchez for a 5-3 lead.

Royals Win Game One

kcrKANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) – Edinson Volquez and the Kansas City Royals have taken the opener of the American League Championship Series.

Volquez combined with three relievers on a three-hitter as the Royals downed the Blue Jays 5-0 in Kansas City. Volquez issued four walks but allowed just two hits in six innings to help the Royals earn their eighth straight ALCS victory dating to Game 5 of the 1985 series against the Blue Jays.

Kansas City scored twice in the third to break a scoreless deadlock as Alcides (al-SEE’-dehs) Escobar hit an RBI double and scored on Lorenzo Cain’s single. Salvador Perez added a solo homer in the fourth off Jays starter Marco Estrada, who allowed six hits while striking out six in 5 1/3 innings.

The Royals tacked on two more insurance runs in the eighth off LaTroy Hawkins. Eric Hosmer hit an RBI double and Kendrys (KEHN’-drees) Morales followed with a sacrifice fly.

Game 2 of the series in Saturday afternoon at Kaufmann Stadium. David Price will start for the Blue Jays against Yordano Ventura.

Pitching Matchup For ALCS Series Opener

kcr sixKANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) – The Royals are sending Blue Jays antagonist Edinson Volquez to the mound for Game 1 of their AL Championship Series while Toronto is countering with Marco Estrada.

The opening game is Friday night at Kauffman Stadium in Kansas City.

It was Volquez whose inside pitching drew the ire of the Blue Jays in early August, eventually leading to a pair of bench-clearing incidents during their game at Rogers Centre. After the game, he called Blue Jays star Josh Donaldson “a little baby” for complaining about his pitching.

The Royals will start Yordano Ventura in Game 2 on Saturday, while Johnny Cueto will pitch the third game in Toronto. The Blue Jays will put David Price on the mound in Game 2, followed by Marcus Stroman and knuckleballer R.A. Dickey.

Kansas State Men’s Basketball More Than Ready to Move On From Last Year

Last season was a rough one for the Kansas State Men’s Basketball team, not only on the court but off the court as well.

BRUCE WEBER 10-15
Bruce Weber during Thursday’s K-State Media Day.

The Wildcats suffered their first losing season in more than a decade last year and as soon as the season was over the team lost more than just their seniors on the team. In all Kansas State lost nine players from last years squad including the dismissals of leading scorer Marcus Foster and freshman Tre Harris. After talking with the team it’s clear they just want to move on.

Wesley Iwundu explained that he made that decision following the season ending loss to TCU last year in the Big 12 tournament.

“When I went into that locker room I said the season is over with so I’m going to start a new chapter and get things turned back around,” said Iwundu.

During Thursday’s Media Day at Kansas State Coach Bruce Weber said that the players have told him they’re tired of talking about last season.

“I just said this is how we deal with it, it’s over, done with, we’re moving forward. We’ve got a good group of guys, we enjoy each other, we practice hard, we want to have a great season, and that’s all we can focus on,” said Weber.

Looking ahead to this season Kansas State was picked tied at 8th with TCU in the Big 12 preseason poll, in-state rival Kansas has been pegged to win their 12th conference title in a row.

“I’m not expecting anyone to pick us to be a top team or anything, because based on last year it’s a new team, new look and we’re just ready to go out there and play and have fun with everything,” said Iwundu.

Kansas State will kick off the season with two exhibition games starting on October 30th against Emporia State and November 6th against Fort Hays State. This year’s non-conference schedule includes six potential matchups against teams that participated in the postseason a year ago, including three from the 2015 NCAA Tournament.
