Blue Jays Win District Championship

The Junction City Blue Jays rolled to a 44-6 win over Wichita North on a rainy cold night at Al Simpler Stadium to clinch the district football title. The Blue Jays will now advance to the Class 6A postseason playoffs for a second consecutive year.

Junction City got on the board first with a safety after North quarterback Darius Russell was tackled in the end zone. But the next score didn’t come until the final play of the first quarter when quarterback Ryan Henington and Jovan Baldwin hooked up on a 33-yard touchdown pass play.

The Blue Jays added four touchdowns in the second quarter, including a 96-yard scoring run by Raye Wilson to help secure a 38-0 halftime lead.  The only score for the Redskins came with 10:59 remaining in the fourth quarter.

Junction City finished the regular season 3-0 in the district, and 9-0 for the regular season. Wichita North finished their season 1-8 overall, and 1-2 in district play.

Blue Jays Lose Member of the Defensive Secondary

blue jay logoA starter in the defensive secondary for the Junction City Blue Jay football team has been lost for the remainder of the season due to an injury.

JC Post has confirmed through multiple sources that JCHS junior Aryus Jones suffered a severe leg injury in a non-contact drill at practice Wednesday. Jones underwent surgery Thursday in Manhattan, and is recovering in good condition.

Jones is one of the outstanding players on defense for the Blue Jays. He has been a starter at safety. Through eight games he had registered 32 tackles, 24 of which were solo tackles, and eight assists. He also had one tackle for a loss, two interceptions, and a fumble recovery for the 8-0 Blue Jays.

Jones is expected to recover for his senior season.

The Blue Jays host Wichita North Friday night at Al Simpler Stadium. Kickoff is set for 7 p.m. It will be senior night for fall sports athletes at JCHS.

If Junction City wins the football game the Blue Jays will clinch a district championship. Wichita North enters the contest 1-7 on the season.

QUICK HITTERS

  • Kansas State opens year four of the Bruce Weber era on Friday at 7 pm, as the Wildcats play host to Division II opponent Emporia State (0-0) at Bramlage Coliseum in the first of two exhibition games. This marks the first time since 2012 that the squad will play two exhibitions.
  • K-State is 56-18 (.757) all-time in exhibition play dating back to 1964, including 44-9 (.830) at home. The Wildcats are 38-9 (.809) at Bramlage Coliseum in exhibition play, including 16 straight wins dating back to 2004, which includes wins over the Hornets in 2005 (79-75) and 2012 (81-51)
  • K-State has primarily played the Kansas members of the MIAA (Mid-America Intercollegiate Athletics Association) since switching to playing Division II teams in exhibition in 2004, which includes five meetings with Washburn, three with Pittsburg State and two each with Emporia State and Fort Hays State. The only exception was Newman in 2010.
  • The last home setback in exhibition play came to the EA Sports All-Stars, 79-67, on Nov. 6, 2003. The last loss in an exhibition came during the team’s tour of Brazil in 2012 – a 77-75 loss to Tijuca on August 13, 2012.
  • Last year, K-State won its only exhibition game, 68-56, over Washburn on Nov. 9, 2014. The team shot 44.1 percent from the field, including 46.7 percent in the second half, to hold off a late surge by the Ichabods.
  • Four players return from that exhibition, including two who scored in double figures. Current senior Justin Edwards scored 14 points on 5-of-10 field goals, with 4 rebounds, while fellow senior Stephen Hurt added 12 points on 5-of-6 shooting off the bench with a pair of blocks. Senior Brian Rohleder and sophomore Mason Schoen also saw time.
  • K-State won its last exhibition meeting with Emporia State, 81-51, on Nov. 4, 2012. The Wildcats shot 46.2 percent from the field, including 53.8 percent in the second half, and posted a 51-26 advantage on the glass to overwhelm the Hornets. The squad outscored ESU, 50-16, in the paint, 18-6, in points off of turnovers, 26-7, in second chance points. Junior D.J. Johnson led all with a near double-double of 17 points and 9 rebounds.
  • K-State is 4-0 under Bruce Weber in exhibition play with wins over Washburn (81-61) and Emporia State (81-51) in 2012, Pittsburg State (75-54) in 2013 and Washburn in 2014.
  • The Wildcats return six lettermen in 2015-16, including five with starting experience, highlighted by Edwards (6.3 ppg., 3.3 rpg.) and junior Wesley Iwundu (5.8 ppg., 3.5 rpg.).
  • Edwards is the Wildcats’ top returner in both scoring and steals (37), while Iwundu is the leading returner in rebounding (108), assists (61), blocks (20) and minutes (780). In addition, the squad returns senior forward Stephen Hurt (4.2 ppg., 2.8 rpg.), senior guard Brian Rohleder (0.1 ppg., 0.4 rpg.) and sophomore walk-on guard Mason Schoen.
  • The Wildcats will also regain the services of junior forward D.J. Johnson, who missed the entire 2014-15 season due to a foot injury. Johnson, who has played in 63 games with five starts in his career, has a career 52.9 field goal percentage to go along with averages of 2.9 points and 3.0 rebounds per game. He averaged 3.5 points and 3.5 rebounds per game in 33 games with five starts as a sophomore in 2013-14.
  • The returning lettermen will be aided by the addition of 10 newcomers, including seven scholarship players. This group will be led by NJCAA Division I First Team All-American Carlbe Ervin II (Oklahoma City, Oklahoma/Connors State College) and freshmen Barry Brown (St. Petersburg, Fla./Gibbs), Kamau Stokes (Baltimore, Md./Fork Union Military Academy) and PARADE All-American and Mr. Kansas Basketball Dean Wade (St. John, Kansas/St. John).
  • All four players bring a championship pedigree to the program, as Ervin led Connors State to a 53-9 record in two seasons, including a 30-game winning streak in 2014-15, and back-to-back Region II and Oklahoma Collegiate Athletics Conference titles, while Stokes and Wade combined for five state championships in high school. In addition, Brown led Gibbs High School in St. Petersburg, Fla., to the Class 5A state semifinals for the first time since 2011.
  • Weber and his coaching staff also welcomes several other newcomers, including junior walk-on transfers Austin Budke (Beloit, Kan./Hutchinson Community College) and Zach Winter (Andover, Kan./Hutchinson Community College) and freshmen Ron Freeman (Los Angeles, Calif./Future Prep), Isaiah Maurice (Durham, N.C./Bull City Prep), Pierson McAtee (Manhattan, Kan./Manhattan) and Dante Williams (Arlington, Texas/Bowie).

Royals Lead Series 2-0!

kcr fourKANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) – Johnny Cueto pitched a two-hitter, Eric Hosmer drove in two more runs and the Kansas City Royals beat the New York Mets 7-1 Wednesday night to take a 2-0 lead in the World Series.

Cueto struck out four, walked three and reinforced why the Royals got the dreadlocked ace from Cincinnati in late July. The crowd at Kauffman Stadium fed off the excitable righty, standing and chanting his name.

Nineteen hours after his sacrifice fly won a 14-inning thriller, Hosmer hit a tiebreaking, two-run single off Jacob deGrom in a four-run fifth. He has 15 RBIs in 13 games this postseason.

Citi Field hosts the World Series for the first time in Game 3 Friday night. Mets rookie Noah Syndergaard faces Yordano Ventura in a matchup of young aces who throw 100 mph heat.

DeGrom had been 3-0 this postseason, with each win on the road.

Royals Rally to Win World Series Opener

kcrKANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) – Alex Gordon hit a tying home run with one out in the ninth inning, Eric Hosmer hit a sacrifice fly against Bartolo Colon in the 14th and the Kansas City Royals beat the New York Mets 5-4 Tuesday night in the longest opener in World Series history.

Making his Series debut at age 42, Colon escaped a bases-loaded jam in the 12th, then got out of trouble again after allowing a leadoff hit in the 13th.

Alcides Escobar, who hit an inside-the-park home run on Matt Harvey’s first pitch of the night, reached leading off the 14th on an error by third baseman David Wright, who bobbled his grounder and then made a wide throw that pulled Lucas Duda off first base.

Ben Zobrist singled him to third and Lorenzo Cain was intentionally walked, loading the bases. Hosmer flied to right, and Escobar scored standing up ahead of Curtis Granderson’s throw.
