ROYALS WIN THE WORLD SERIES!!!

2015 world series

NEW YORK (AP) – The Kansas City Royals won their first World Series crown since 1985, rallying in the ninth inning when Eric Hosmer scrambled home to tie it and then breaking away in the 12th to beat the New York Mets 7-2 in Game 5 Sunday night.

The daring Royals capped their postseason full of comebacks with a dash for the ages, and made up for last year’s near-miss in a Game 7 loss to San Francisco.

Hosmer’s alert sprint home from third base on a grounder finished off a two-run burst in the ninth against Matt Harvey and closer Jeurys Familia.

Then in the 12th, pinch-hitter Christian Colon delivered a tiebreaking single in his first appearance of this postseason. Lorenzo Cain added a three-run double

Royals starter Edinson Volquez threw two-hit ball for six innings. He pitched a day after returning from his father’s funeral in the Dominican Republic.

Chiefs Run Over Lions at Wembley Stadium

chiefs logoLONDON (AP) – Alex Smith threw for 145 yards and two touchdowns, and ran for 78 yards and a touchdown to lead the Kansas City Chiefs over the Detroit Lions 45-10 Sunday at Wembley Stadium.

Smith scrambled his way through the Detroit defense for some big plays, including a career-high 49-yard run in the second quarter that set up his 12-yard touchdown run.

The Chiefs (3-5) were playing at Wembley for the first time, while the Lions (1-7) played in London for the second straight season.

De’Anthony Thomas, Charcandrick West and Spencer Ware also rushed for touchdowns for the Chiefs. Thomas ended up with 100 total yards, while West ran for 97. Travis Kelce and Jeremy Maclin caught TD passes in the second half.

A LOOK AT K-STATE

  • Kansas State continues its gauntlet in Big 12 play with its fourth nationally-ranked team in the last five games coming to Manhattan.
  • The Cats, guided by 2015 College Football Hall of Fame inductee Bill Snyder, are 3-4 this year, which includes close losses to No. 19 Oklahoma State and No. 2 TCU.
  • K-State took the Horned Frogs down to the wire behind four rushing touchdowns by Joe Hubener and two more from running back Charles Jones. The Cats tied the game at 45 with 1:47 left, but TCU scored a late TD for the win.
  • That came a week after K-State took a 34-33 lead over OSU in Stillwater with 3:01 left, but the Cowboys kicked a field goal with less than a minute left for a two-point win.
  • Hubener set a career high with three touchdown passes vs. LA Tech, including overtime strikes to Dominique Heath and the eventual game-winner to Kody Cook.
  • Charles Jones leads the team with 302 rushing yards, including 215 in the last three games. The junior is coming off a career-best 122-yard effort at Texas, the most by a K-State RB since the final regular-season game of 2013.
  • Defensively, the Cats are paced by linebackers Elijah Lee and Will Davis with 39 tackles apiece. The two have also combined for all three Wildcat interceptions this year, including two by Lee against TCU.
  • Defensive tackles Travis Britz and Will Geary have also been a force, combining for 53 tackles (7.6 per game), 13.5 tackles for loss and 5.5 sacks.

A LOOK AT BAYLOR

  • Baylor enters Thursday’s game at 7-0 and 4-0 in the Big 12 after a 45-27 win over Iowa State.
  • The Bears rank in the top-10 nationally in 17 statistical categories, including top marks in scoring offense, total offense and passing efficiency.
  • Freshman quarterback Jarrett Stidham is expected to make his first career start after Seth Russell, one of the top QBs in the country this season, was injured last game.
  • Shock Linwood is seventh nationally in rushing, while wide receiver Corey Coleman is third in receiving yards and tops in receiving touchdowns.

A LOOK AT THE SERIES

  • K-State leads the overall series over Baylor, 7-5, but the Wildcats are looking to break a three-game losing streak to the Bears.
  • Kansas State’s last win over Baylor was a 36-35 triumph in 2011 against a Bear squad that was ranked 15th nationally while K-State was unranked at the time.
  • The Wildcats fell to the 15th-ranked Bears, 35-25, in 2013, the last meeting in Manhattan. It was the first Baylor win in Manhattan in five tries.SNYDER AMONG BEST EVER
  • Head coach Bill Snyder currently has 190 career victories, 151 more than any other coach in school history.
  • Snyder ranks second in the FBS in wins among active coaches at their current schools, fifth in total victories among active coaches and 30th in all-time wins.
  • He is 10 wins away from becoming the 25th coach in FBS history with 200 career wins.
  • Snyder, who has 109 conference wins, is one of four coaches with 100 Big 8/12 victories, joining Nebraska’s Tom Osborne (153) and Oklahoma’s Bob Stoops (107) and Barry Switzer (100).

Defensively, redshirt freshman safety Kendall Adams made his first-career start at Texas, while true freshman cornerback Duke Shelley has started the last three games.
  • Redshirt or true freshmen have combined to make 22 total starts this season, which is tied for the fourth most under head coach Bill Snyder. The most came in Snyder’s first year (1989) when freshmen combined for 43 starts.
  • Additionally, a total of 26 freshmen or sophomores have seen playing time in the first seven weeks.IN-SEASON TURNAROUNDS
  • Although K-State is 3-4 in the first seven games this year, the Cats can look at recent in-season turnarounds.
  • Just two seasons ago, Kansas State began the 2013 season 2-4 but was able to win six of its last seven games, including a Buffalo Wild Wings Bowl victory over Michigan, to finish 8-5.
  • In 2001, the Wildcats were 2-4 – including losses in their first four conference games – but won four of their last five regular-season contests to make a bowl.THURSDAY-NIGHT LIGHTS
  • Thursday’s game will mark the fifth time in the last six years that Kansas State will play a Thursday-night contest.

Royals Rally for Win in World Series Game Four

2015 world seriesNEW YORK (AP) – The Kansas City Royals rallied for three runs in the eighth inning after second baseman Daniel Murphy’s error and startled the New York Mets 5-3 Saturday night for a 3-1 lead in the World Series.

The Royals posted their seventh postseason comeback win this October. Now, one more victory in November will clinch their first crown since 1985.

Edinson Volquez, who pitched Game 1 for Kansas City only hours after his father died, has returned from the funeral and will start Game 5 Sunday night. Matt Harvey starts for the Mets.

Mets rookie Michael Conforto hit two home runs, and a sellout crowd kept getting louder and louder on Halloween night. But the fans at Citi Field gasped, then went silent after Murphy’s misplay.

Murphy let Eric Hosmer’s grounder go under his glove with one out, allowing the tying run to score. Mike Moustakas and Salvador Perez followed with RBI singles.

Volquez Rejoins Royals

2015 world seriesNEW YORK (AP) – Edinson Volquez has rejoined the Kansas City Royals following his father’s death.

The right-hander remains scheduled to start Sunday night in Game 5 of the World Series against the New York Mets, pending a conversation with manager Ned Yost.

Volquez, back from the Dominican Republic, wore a hooded sweat shirt in the Kansas City dugout during Game 4 at Citi Field on Saturday night.

“I’ve got to sit down and talk to Edi. But we’re still planning on him pitching tomorrow,” Yost said a few hours before the game.

Volquez started the Series opener Tuesday night, hours after his father died, and allowed three runs over six innings in a no-decision. He said he got the news after completing his outing.

Kansas City won 5-4 in 14 innings, and Volquez flew home to the Dominican Republic.

“These are huge games. Edi’s been with this team all year long. He’s worked so hard to get to this point,” Yost said. “And it was like (teammate) Chris Young when his dad passed away. Chris just knew how proud his dad was of him and that his dad would want him to carry on. His dad would want him to be on that mound and helping his team win. And I imagine that Edi’s dad would want the same thing.”

Volquez’s father, 63-year-old Daniel Volquez, died of heart failure.

“When you face a situation like he did, I’m sure the one thing his father would want him to do is pitch Game 5,” said Mets manager Terry Collins, who lost his father just before spring training. “So you’re challenged by that, the grief, and yet, hey, look, you know what would make him proud and make him happy, and that’s to go out and do what you do best and that’s to pitch.”

“So I salute him because I know how hard it will be for him. Right now he’s got something else to pitch for, and that’s the memory of his dad. He’s already tough enough,” he said.

After the offseason departure of No. 1 starter James Shields in free agency, the Royals signed Volquez to a $20 million, two-year contract. He led the team in wins (13) and ERA (3.55) during the regular season while throwing 200 1-3 innings.

Volquez is 1-2 with a 4.37 ERA in four starts this postseason.

Sooners Roll Past Jayhawks

jayhawkLAWRENCE, Kan. (AP) – Baker Mayfield completed 27 of 32 passes for 383 yards and four touchdowns and No. 14 Oklahoma beat Kansas 62-7 on Saturday.

Sterling Shepard had 183 receiving yards and a touchdown on 11 catches. Samaje Perine added 90 rushing yards and two touchdowns on 11 carries for the Sooners (7-1, 4-1 Big 12).

Oklahoma coach Bob Stoops is now 11-0 against the Jayhawks in his career. Kansas (0-8, 0-5) has dropped 11 consecutive games dating back to last season.

The Sooners led 38-7 at halftime.

Oklahoma scored on its first drive of the second half when Sam Grant snagged a 1-yard touchdown pass from Mayfield. Kansas fumbled on the first play of the next drive, and Oklahoma quickly took a 52-7 lead after backup quarterback Trevor Knight finished a short drive with a 1-yard touchdown run.

Mets Take Game Three of the World Series

2015 world seriesDavid Wright and Curtis Granderson homered, rookie Noah Syndergaard pitched six effective innings and the New York Mets roughed up the Kansas City Royals 9-3 Friday night, cutting their World Series deficit to 2-1.

Shut down in Kansas City, the Mets came out swinging in the first Series game at Citi Field. Wright launched a two-run homer in the first inning and finished with four RBIs as New York broke loose for 12 hits.

Syndergaard set a serious tone with the first pitch, firing a 97 mph fastball to the backstop that sent Alcides Escobar to the dirt and got the crowd buzzing.

Syndergaard struggled early, but the Mets took the lead after a back-and-forth start, chased Yordano Ventura and pulled away.

The Mets will try to even things in Game 4 on Halloween night, when hometown rookie Steven Matz starts against Chris Young, who won the opener in relief.

K-State 8o Emporia State 42 in Exhibition Basketball at Bramlage Coliseum

Head Coach Bruce Weber Quotes

On feelings about the game…
“We did not know what to expect and our guys did not know either because it is a whole new team. Our older guys gave us consistent and even numbers, which eased up the young guys so they could come along. I thought we struggled early and were very stagnant on offense and did not do what we practiced, but that is why we play two exhibition games. Wes got us going and got us on a nice run in the first half. The young guys did some good things but it was all new to them. From learning to deal with the fouling, to learning when to go and when not to. We got a little bit of confidence from this and we just need to continue making progress.”

On the pressure similarities in this game and the 2014 Auburn game
“We needed this game. The scrimmages are good, but there are no emotions in that because there is nobody in there. In scrimmages you play and you play hard, but I thought that we needed the feel of the crowd and the lights and TV. I thought during the second half they started to get more comfortable, especially with the younger guys. I thought the older guys did a better job in the second half as well.”

On Isaiah Maurice not on the roster…
“Isaiah [Maurice] is an NCAA academic issue. It looks like right now he will not be able to play but he has been able to practice. I do not want to say he is totally unavailable, but right now that is the case.”

On getting a big win…
“I would rather have it this way and it is key to keep our focus. The first five minutes were good but then we got a little casual but then we came back. In some ways you want the close game because you are going to have to go through that sooner or later. I think this was a good confidence building game for our guys and they look a lot more confident.”

On Austin Budke
“He has been good in practice. He is tough, very smart and he had scholarship offers. When I met him last year he played three-man, but I knew that he was not a three-man. He is a four-man and I told him if he can accept playing smart and being physical. He makes shots, which sometimes he shoots too much, but he makes shots. I think with our lack of depth with the big guys he is going to have to take some shots.”

K-State Player Quotes

Guard Wesley Iwundu
On first game of the season…
“It felt good. There is always a little bit of nerves going into the first game. I will say, after the first probably five minutes I kind of loosened up and got into the game and settled down and played my game.”

On his play
“I felt good about it. I accomplished some things that I set for myself and to make the team successful. I think it is a good start for the season and I hope to keep it going.”

On how the team played
“With all of the new guys, I felt like they were a little nervous in the beginning. As the game went on I felt like we all came together and saw what we are capable of as a team. I think guys did a good job sharing the ball with each other and showing a lot of team skills.”

Guard Justin Edwards

On the beginning of the season…

“I think I have been preparing well this season, just knowing it is my last season. I have been getting in the gym a lot, helping the younger guys and getting and getting my own confidence up. I was definitely confident coming into this game.”

Emporia State Head Coach and Player Quotes

Head Coach Shaun Vandiver
Opening Statement…
Tonight we came in here with the hope of really going out and apposing our will and playing our offence, and we ran it agents a team that took us out of what we wanted to do. There were signs and glimpses, but now instead of it being 10 percent or 11 percent we need to get it up to 80 percent going into our next game in Hays. We did some good things and right now our biggest is doing our job and doing what we need to do and focusing and executing our game plan.”

On tonight’s game…
“We brought out some very good new pieces, but it is going to take some more time to jell. You cannot expect Charles [McKinney], [Joshua] Oswald and Kevin [Allen] to come in and jell with Micah [Swank] and [Terrence Moore] it takes some time and you have to work on it. The biggest thing I think everyone that came to the game tonight they rushed and did things out of charter. Terrence would agree with this as soon as he got it going and found his grove he was doing the things that he need to do to lead us to a very wonderful season. We cannot spot a team 26 point and wake up and say we want to play.”

On how the team can improve…
“I defiantly expect us to compete and battle, but here is the problem when you have someone like Kevin [Allen] and Brad [Fisher] guys think that they do not have to rebound. Like I told them there is no two back in defensive rebounding. All five have to crash, and we did not do a good job of doing that. We have to understand that there is only one way to go and that is up. We have filmtomorrow, we have practice, we have a great environment on campus with the football team playing Washburn and we have to keep getting better. Now we have the essential film of someone else besides ourselves that we can watch and get better from.”

Guard Terrence Moore
On what K-State did to take over the game…
“It was not really them it was on us. Like coach Vandiver said I feel like we were being speed up. Certain things we have worked on. Of course when we scrimmage each other it is different color jersey. I felt it was on us, because we got sped up and spotted a team 20 and the decided to play. A good Big 12 team like that when they get you down 20 they are going to put you away.”
