Back and Forth Game Goes to Wildcats

Jack Cantele’s 41-yard field goal with three second remaining lifted Kansas State past TCU 33-31 Saturday night in Manhattan.

Bill Snyder said after the game he was proud of his team. “Proud of the fact that they came back and won a back and forth ballgame. Certainly awfully proud of Cantele. That’s a great deal of pressure on a young guy like that, and everybody that’s on the field goal unit.” The coach also credited the Wildcat offense for “waking up” and getting some movement and for getting the ball into field goal position, and said Kansas State played well a good portion of the time, but gave up too much.

“Bottom line is we didn’t play nearly as well as I would like for us to play. We played well enough to win. Those are things we’ll address on Monday. I want our guys to enjoy the fact they won another ballgame.

K-State opted not to use their final timeout before Cantele’s game winning field goal. But Snyder felt he made a mistake by not using one before TCU’s Jaden Oberkrom’s 56-yard field goal that put the Horned Frogs ahead 31-30 with 2:13 remaining. “They’ve tried him at 62 so there wasn’t any doubt in my mind he could do it. And we were bantering back and forth as to whether they were going to kick a field goal. I should have taken the timeout. That was my error.”

After the go-ahead TCU field goal the Wildcats drove down the field one final time and got in position for Cantele’s final field goal.

K-State senior safety Ty Zimmerman left the game with 6:50 remaining in the first quarter with an apparent leg injury. He was taken to the locker room and then watched the second on crutches from the sideline.

After the game Snyder addressed the play of Zimmerman’s backup Dylan Schellenberg. “Schellenberg played well I thought with one exception. He let a ball get over the top of him. It was a big play and we can’t afford to give up big plays. That’s what bit us in the fanny earlier in the year.”  Snyder added you can’t remove one snap from the game, “But if you did he really played very well prior to that.”

Kansas State ( 6-4 ) became bowl eligible with the win. The loss eliminated TCU ( 4-7 ) from bowl contention this season.

52,697 was the announced attendance for the game.

It was the best kick that I had ever kicked, going right down the middle the entire way,” Cantele said. “I have to say I have been ready for this my whole life. Everything up to this point has been getting me ready for this. All other thoughts have to be out of your head by then.”

Quarterback Jake Waterssaid that he was confident Cantele was going to make it,”I knew he was going to make it. I’ve seen him make it in practice a bunch of times. Thinking back I didn’t have any doubt in my mind that Jack wasn’t going to come through and he did.”

K-State didn’t get started until late in the first quarter when K-State’s Blake Slaughter picked off a pass by TCU’s Casey Pachall. A few plays later Daniel Sams found the endzone from 11 yards out. However the play before Slaughters pick, Senior Safety Ty Zimmerman was assisted off the field and later taken to the locker room. Surging WIldcats Welcome Back TCU’s Patterson

MANHATTAN, Kan. (AP) – The road leading to town wasn’t known as Coach Bill Snyder Highway the last time that Gary Patterson exited north off Interstate 70 and headed toward the Kansas State campus.wildcat

But when the TCU coach returns for the first time in three decades on Saturday, he’ll not only be trying to deal Snyder a defeat, but also do the same to his alma mater.

Patterson played linebacker for the Wildcats in the early 1980s.

His Horned Frogs (4-6, 2-5 Big 12) are in must-win mode, too. Another loss would eliminate them from bowl consideration. Kansas State (5-4, 3-3) has won three straight games and can become eligible for a bowl trip of its own with a victory.
