Junction City Wins Centennial League Wrestling Championship

The Junction City Blue Jays captured the Centennial League wrestling championship Saturday night in Manhattan.blue jay logo

The Blue Jays finished with 197.5 points, and had six league champions in their weight classes. They included Gary Joint at 113 pounds, Jake Bazaan 138, Andrew Millsap 152, Mikah Felton 170, Devonte Wilson 182, and Kayne Hutchinson at 220 pounds.

Junction City coach Bob Laster thought it was a tremendous performance by the Blue Jays. “Just shows what type of team I have, and what type of guys on our team. ” He stated that the entire season the Blue Jays had been facing adversity and other types of things. “And this team is always trying to find a way to win, and that’s what they did today. I had guys that stepped it up for us.”

Other highlights for Junction City included a second place finish by Freshman Aryrus Jones at 145 pounds, and third place finishes by Gabe Padilla at 120, Gavin Kroeger 132, and Kamari Smith at 160 pounds.

Blue Jays Stumble at Emporia in Boys Basketball

The Emporia Spartans used solid three-point shooting and free throw shooting to knock off the Junction City Blue Jay boys basketball team 70-67 Saturday night in Emporia.blue jay logo

The win snapped a nine-game losing streak for the Spartans, while the Blue Jays dropped their seventh game in a row.

Emporia hit seven three-point shots and went 25-30 at the free throw line enroute to the win.

The Blue Jays tried to make a late run at the Spartans with some strong three-point shooting of their own, but after trailing 52-36 early in the fourth quarter they, ironically, came up three points short.  Junction City hit six three-point shots in the final stanza and scored 31 points in that period to 25 for the Spartans.

Junction City, 4-10, will host Seaman Tuesday night.

K-State Downs Texas

MANHATTAN, Kan. (AP) – Marcus Foster scored a career-high 34 points on 13-of-16 shooting and Kansas State beat No. 15 Texas 74-57 on Saturday, ending the Longhorns’ seven-game winning streak.wildcat

Foster’s points were the most for Kansas State freshman since Michael Beasley had 39 against Kansas on March 1, 2008. Foster’s previous high was 25 points against Oral Roberts on Nov. 13.

Will Spradling added nine points for the Wildcats (16-7, 6-4 Big 12) who extended their home winning streak to 12 games. The win improved coach Bruce Weber’s record at Bramlage Coliseum to 292, 13-1 in conference games.

Isaiah Taylor had 17 points for the Longhorns (18-5, 7-3) while Connor Lammert added eight points. Texas entered the game with four players averaging in double figures.

Foster’s impressive dunk off an alley-oop dunk pass was the highlight of an opening 18-4 run for the Wildcats over the game’s opening 8 minutes.

Wildcats Look Ahead to KU After Downing Texas

The Kansas State Wildcats have a quick turn around after Saturday’s 74-57 upset of #15 Texas, taking on #8 Kansas Monday at Bramlage Coliseum.

The last time these two teams met up was in Lawrence on January 10th and the Jayhawks ran away with a 86-60 win over the Wildcats.

Will the guys be rested having just a day between games? Coach Weber said that he thought they split up the playing time pretty well against Texas. Kansas will also have the quick turnaround playing West Virginia Saturday.”They get done later and they have to travel here, not a long drive but a little bit of a drive. I hope were alright because against them they just have so much size, so much talent, so many people, we have to be all hooked up and have everyone play well if we’re going to be successful,” Weber said.Preparing for Kansas with such a short turn around won’t be as difficult because the Wildcats have seen them already.

“We have a whole day, we’ve already played them. Bill (Self) does a good job but he’s got so many players, so many bodies. I compare it to the Packers, old sweep. You knew it was coming, can you stop it? You know what they’re going to do, do we have the energy, the bodies to stop it? We’ll see Monday night.”

In Monday’s game Weber said the team has got to get to the basket,” We’ve got to get some layups. You can’t get transition unless you get stops. We’ve got to steal some baskets because they’re just so big and they make it so tough on you.”

Marcus Foster struggled to score when they were in Lawrence last but Saturday he led the team with 34 points. The difference in Lawrence for Foster was that he had never really faced a defense that scouted him so much. “I over pressed myself about it, I forced the issue to much and played to selfish, so I just have to relax and keep playing how I play.”

K-State’s defense will need to improve this time around against Kansas according to Thomas Gipson.

“We need to play team defense, we need to rebound better. I think overall you know its just the defensive part,” Gipson said.

On offense Gipson said they’ll need to share the ball better. “We were just to stagnant. We were not moving and not cutting just waiting on something to happen, everyone was ball watching. It can’t be like that Monday; we’ve all got to share the ball.”

The 279th Dillons Sunflower Showdown will tip off at 8:00 p.m. Monday night at Bramlage Coliseum.

Blue Jays Fall by Two Points

Marcus Meier scored with 3.9 seconds remaining on a shot in the lane  to lift the Hayden Wildcats past the Junction City Blue Jays in boys basketball 48-46 in Topeka.jc hayden

A Blue Jay attempt to win the game at the final buzzer came up short when Jonathan Wilds three point shot attempt bounced off the front of the rim, allowing the Wildcats to hold off the Blue Jays.

This game was close throughout, with the lead see sawing back and forth. One other play stood out for the Wildcats with 1:53 remaining in the fourth quarter. Brogan Heinen hit a  three-point shot from the left corner and was fouled on the play. He went to the free throw line, hit the charity, and completed a four-point play that lifted Hayden from a two-point deficit to a two-point lead.

Junction City fell to 4-9 with the loss. The Blue Jays will play at Emporia at 6:30 p.m. Saturday. That game is a makeup of a contest that was postponed due to snow this past Tuesday night. Junction City will also host Seaman next Tuesday night.

The Junction City Lady Jays had a tough time at Hayden Friday night as they lost 78-44.

Kealee Rains led Junction City with 19 points, while Miranda Beck had 19 and Jordan Lenherr 21 points for Hayden.

Hayden is 9-2 while the Lady Jays fell to 3-10.

Junction City will host Seaman Tuesday.

The Centennial League wrestling tournament is on tap Saturday at Manhattan High School. The Junction City Blue Jays, who won the tournament a year ago, will be among the participating teams.

K-State Football Players Headed to NFL Combine

NFL scouts will be watching K-State hopefuls lineman Cornelius Lucas and long snapper Marcus Heit in Indianapolis, Indiana later this month. The 2014 NFL Scouting Combine will be February 22-25, where 25 Big 12 players were invited to work out on the first day of the Combine.

According to kstatesports.com, Heit will be the only long snapper in the nation to be invited to Indianapolis, and Lucas is one of three Big 12 linemen. Lucas started 26 games as a left tackle, earning All-Big 12 honors his junior and senior year. Heit, from Derby, KS, was successful on all 363 combined punt and filed goal snaps during his career.

The 2014 NFL Combine will be televised life on the NFL Network.

Division I schools flock again to Kansas JUCOs

EL DORADO, Kan. (AP) – Troy coach Larry Blakeney might as well have bought a house in Kansas. Or at least rented a nice apartment somewhere within driving distance of its many junior colleges.

Blakeney has been around long enough to know quite well the number of Division I prospects that schools in the Jayhawk Conference spit out each year. He’s gone after many of them in the past, as have more high-profile schools such as Auburn and Florida State.

So it was little surprise that he began plugging holes with a trip to the Sunflower State. And by the time signing day rolled around Wednesday, six of his 19 prospects were from Kansas junior colleges.

In all, nearly four dozen Kansas JUCO players signed Division I letters of intent.

Blue Jays Set to Further Their Football Careers

Two former  Junction City Blue Jay football players have signed letters of intent to continue their football careers.blue jay logo

Semaj Johnson, a tight end for Junction City this past season, will play for Washburn University in Topeka.

Immanuel Cason has committed to Emporia State. He was listed by ESU on their football recruiting list as a linebacker / athlete.

Committing to junior colleges from Junction City were:

– Nate Funk, Bethany

– Jeffrey Clarke, Garden City

– Jay Brime, Garden City

– Chris Franklin, Garden City

They were members of the Blue Jay football team that went 6-3 this past season.
