JCHS Officials Sort out Score Problem From Tuesday Nights Blue Jay Boys Basketball Game

Junction City High School officials have been sorting out the problem that occurred during Tuesday night’s Blue Jay boys basketball loss to Seaman at the Shenk Gym.

Late third – early fourth quarter was the key problem time when a six point blue jay logoswing resulted in a 10-point lead for Seaman instead of a four-point lead over Junction City.

Matt Westerhaus, JCHS Athletic Director, explained there was an error at the scorers table.

“During the third quarter we gave Seaman credit for a three-pointer that we hit. So at the end of third quarter the clock had the score as 39-46 in favor of seaman, the score was correct on the clock at that time,” Westerhaus said. “At the 7:52 mark of the fourth quarter, we then added three points to Seaman’s score, which now made the score 39-49 in favor of Seaman. That adjustment was made after a conversation with table workers.”

The game continued on until the scoreboard read 52-45 in favor of Seaman, but then after a conference at the scorer’s table an adjustment was made to reflect what had become an inaccurate official scorebook, and three points were taken away from Junction City to make the score 52-42.

Despite the fact the Blue Jay coaches pointed out the score was wrong, the game then proceeded with Seaman winning by the final score of 58-46.

JCHS officials reviewed video of the game and scorebook records as they worked to determine what had actually happened in the game.

Blue Jays – Lady Jays Fall to Seaman

The Junction City Blue Jay – Seaman boys basketball game will be remembered for a nutty fourth quarter.  blue jay logo

Seaman got the win at the Shenk Gym 58-46.

But there was controversy at the scorer’s table apparently with the scorebook in the second half.  JCHS officials believed there was a six-point swing with three points added to the Seaman total and three taken away from Junction City. The score was 46-39 in favor of Seaman when the Blue Jays scored. Junction City coach Pat Battle remembered that score and the Blue Jays hit a 3-point shot. “And I saw the 49 go up ( for Seaman ). Then they put 41 up ( for Junction City ) and then they hit a three, and it was 52. To make a long story shot….bottom line was is that it was a six-point swing.”

After the game there was also some discussion that it was only a five-point swing since the 3-point shot made by the Blue Jays may have only been a two-point basket at the end of the third quarter.

The problem was realized early in the fourth quarter, and after a long conference at the scorer’s table that’s when three points were removed from the Blue Jay total.

Battle noted his team needed to do a better job throughout the game of defending Seaman. He pointed out that Seaman also shot the ball well,  and got way too many second-shot opportunities. But he also stated,  “When you cut it to a four, and the next thing you know and you’re looking up it went from a four-point…it’s a four point deficit  to a ten point deficit in the early fourth quarter, it totally changes what you do and how you call a game, without a doubt.”

A review of the game video will be the only way to determine specifically what occurred and whether the score was right.

Seaman improved to 6-9 with the victory, while Junction City fell to 4-11.  Tanner Lueker led the Blue Jays in the game with 14 points.

Seaman defeated Junction City in the girls game at the Shenk Gym 48-24. Seaman jumped to a 10-6 first quarter lead and led throughout the game.

Junction City, 3-11, was led in scoring by Kealee Rains with 13 points. Kori Kamm had 11 for Junction City.

Junction City High School basketball teams will host Washburn Rural Friday night.

Kansas Falls Short In Overtime to K-State 85-82

Kansas was never able to take control of the game Monday night in Manhattan, never leading by more than two.

The game went back and forth for the first five minutes with each team exchanging baskets before K-State went on a 7-0 run to lead 13-5 with 13:12 to play in the half.

“I felt like there was a time where we could have taken the lead and just get away with it. They did not stop fighting, they KU 2-10were fighting the whole game and they were relentless,” Nadiir Tharpe, Kansas junior guard, said after the game.

Kansas was able to battle back in the first half though and kept it within four for the final ten minutes. KU even led by one with :50 seconds left in the half but a free throw by K-State’s Omari Lawrence tied it back up again at 29-29. A missed dunk by Perry Ellis and Brannen Greene’s put back on the rebound was blocked by Lawrence in the final seconds of the half ended it tied 29-29.

“The first half was an ugly game. You can ask anybody, even the officials. It is hard to referee a game with a lot of missed shots, a lot of kicking and banging going on, but I thought that kind of gave us the best shot to make them not play as well,” Bill Self, Kansas head coach explained.

The second half started the same way the first half started. Both teams swapped points for the first few minutes before Kansas State took off on a 9-0 run to lead 46-37 with 13:26 to play in regulation.

“We did not do anything to make them play poorly in the second half,” Self said.

BILL SELF 2-10Kansas never did go away though. Whenever the Wildcats would go on a run Kansas would find a way to get a shot to stay in it.

The Jayhawks finally made their move in the final two minutes of regulation, going on a 9-1 run to tie it up 69-69.

Kansas scored first in overtime to go up 71-69 but Kansas State’s, Will Spradling, quickly responded with a three to retake the lead. Two free throws by Perry Ellis with 3:32 to play in overtime gave the Jayhawks the lead back, however, K-State’s Marcus Foster scored on a fast break to retake the lead, this time for good for the Wildcats.

“We did not play very well in overtime,” Self said. “Give them credit though, that is kind of deflating the way the way we came back against them, but they responded well in overtime. They had some guys step up and make some really nice plays.”

The Jayhawks had four players in double figures and were led by Perry Ellis who finished with 19 points.

Kansas fell to 18-6 on the season and 9-2 in the Big 12. K-State improved to 17-7 overall and 7-4 in conference play.

K-State Wins in Overtime 85-82 Over Kansas

It took an extra five minutes but Kansas State was able to pull out the win over in state rival Kansas Monday night 85-82 in overtime.

The game went back and forth nearly the entire time with 20 lead changes but Kansas was never able to run away with it leading by no more than two the entire game.

“We had to guard. If we had tried to outscore them we weren’t going to win. We were trying to be patient on offense,” explained Bruce Weber, KSU Head Coach.”That was the only way we had a chance to beat them was to defend them, out hustle them, out tough them and take the game to them. I thought we did that enough to get the victory.”

The game was tied going into half time 29-29. In the second half the score went back and forth with K-State going on a run and then Kansas coming right back to either tie it up or go up by a basket. The Wildcats saw their lead go as high as nine multiple times in the second half but in the final two minutes was when Kansas went on a 9-0 run to tie it up 69-69, off of a tip-in by Andrew Wiggins with four seconds left.

The clock would run out just after a turnover by Will Spradling.

Going into overtime Weber told had a message for his team, “I told them all to look at me. You’ve all worked too hard to not grab this game.”

After Kansas scored the first basket in overtime Weber said K-State could have given up, “I thought the crowd lost a little energy. Our assistants were trying to get the crowd to stay in it.”

It was :24 seconds later though that Spradling responded with a three point shot that got the crowd right back in it.

Fans storm the court.

“I’ve made a lot of those in my day so I wasn’t really worried about it,” Spradling said. “I was confident in shooting it and taking it.”Kansas took the lead back on the next possession but a layup by Marcus Foster gave the Wildcats the lead back and they would never give it up again.

Foster led the Wildcats in scoring with 20 points. Spradling followed Foster with 15 points.

“We just went out there and played hard,” Foster said after the game. “We knew if we played hard then the rest would take care of itself.”

“It was a great win for us and just another step. We are in the Big 12 race. There is still a chance and we are only two games back,” Spradling said. “It was really a big game for us and we have to come out Saturday and be prepared.”

K-State improved to 17-7 on the season and 7-4 in Big 12 play. Kansas fell to 18-6 and 9-2 in conference play.

The Wildcats will be on the road Saturday to Waco, Texas, taking on Baylor in a 6:00 p.m. game.

Royals, Holland Mum On Contract Discussions

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) – Royals pitchers and catchers report to Arizona for the start of spring training on Friday, and that presumably means All-Star closer Greg Holland will be there.kcr five

Of course, there’s a little business that still needs to be finished.

Holland is eligible for arbitration and the two sides have yet to reach an agreement. He asked for $5.2 million after going 2-1 with a 1.21 ERA and 47 saves, while the Royals offered $4.1 million. Either way, it’s a big bump from the $539,000 he made last season.

The Royals would not disclose when his arbitration hearing will take place, so it’s unclear when a deal would need to be reached. Hearings run through Feb. 21.

Marcus Smart Suspended Three Games

STILLWATER, Okla. (AP) – Oklahoma State star Marcus Smart has been suspended three games by the Big 12 for shoving a fan in the closing seconds of the Cowboys’ loss at Texas Tech on Saturday nightbasketball clip art two.

Oklahoma State coach Travis Ford announced the suspension as he spoke in support of the All-America guard Sunday.

Smart apologized for his actions prior to Ford speaking at the news conference on the Oklahoma State campus.

Ford says Smart accepts his punishment and feels terrible. Smart will miss games against Texas, Oklahoma and Baylor.

Late in Saturday night’s game at Lubbock, Texas, Smart shoved Tech fan Jeff Orr with two hands after it appeared the Red Raiders fan said something to the top NBA prospect. Teammates quickly pulled Smart away as he pointed back in Orr’s direction.
