SURPRISE, Ariz. (AP) – The Kansas City Royals claimed switch-hitting outfielder Jimmy Paredes off waivers Monday from the Baltimore Orioles.baseball

Paredes, 25, has played in 118 games in the majors for the Houston Astros since 2011. He hit .192 with four doubles, a home run and 10 RBIs in 125 at-bats last season with the Astros.

Paredes, who was originally signed by the New York Yankees in 2007, is with his third organization this offseason. He was claimed off waivers by the Miami Marlins in November and the Orioles on Saturday.

To make room for Paredes on the 40-man roster, the Royals designated for assignment right-handed pitcher Maikel Cleto, who was 1-2 with a 3.55 ERA in 19 appearances in 2013 with Triple-A Omaha.

Royals start spring optimistic about playoffs

SURPRISE, Ariz. (AP) – Starting pitcher James Shields entered Royals camp on Friday wearing a shirt with the word “propaganda” on the front.

The Royals begin spring training with hopes of ending a 29-year-old playoff drought since winning the 1985 World Series.

“The Royals’ propaganda, I think we’ve going to have a really good spring training,” Shields said. “I’m real excited to be here and get going. Hopefully, we can continue doing what we did at the end of the year last year.

“We’re in high spirits. We’ve got a lot of work to do. I think spring training is where it all starts. Our main goal this year is to go to the playoffs and win the World Series, bottom line. We don’t take anything for granted.”

Chiefs sign Gordon to one-year contract

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) – The Chiefs have signed restricted free agent Richard Gordon to a one-year contract to provide depth at tight end, a position where they struggled through injuries much of last season.

The team had not announced the deal Friday, but NFLPA records indicate Gordon will receive $645,000 in 2014.

Gordon joined the Chiefs in December and appeared in two regular season games, making one catch for 3 yards against San Diego. That was the game in which the Chiefs, already assured of their playoff position, rested virtually all of their starters.

The Chiefs also have tight ends Anthony Fasano, Travis Kelce and Sean McGrath on the roster.

Unheralded freshman Foster driving K-State success

MANHATTAN, Kan. (AP) – There was no reason to suspect that Marcus Foster would be the driving force behind Kansas State’s surprising success.

Heck, it even caught him by surprise.

Yet the lightly recruited guard out of Wichita Falls, Texas, just scored 34 points in a win over then-No. 15 Texas. The talented freshman followed that up with a game-high 20 in Monday night’s upset of No. 7 Kansas.

Foster says he’s “in disbelief” over how quickly he’s gotten up to speed in big-time college basketball, while Kansas State coach Bruce Weber praised his driven nature.

Foster is averaging 15 points while leading the Wildcats to a 17-7 record, and a 7-4 start in the Big 12, putting them just two games behind the Jayhawks in the league race.
