Kansas State Shuts Out Texas 23-0

The Kansas State Wildcats held the Texas Longhorns scoreless Saturday 23-0 as the Wildcats improved to 6-1 and 4-0 in the Big 12.

Kansas State’s Defense held Texas to under 200 yards of total offense, while recovering one fumble and holding them to a three and KSU TEXAS 10-25out on their first three possessions. Coach Bill Snyder said after the game that holding the Longhorns to a three and out on their first three possessions was major.

“That’s something that we try to get indoctrinated to the best we possibly can,” said Snyder. “Probably had some other opportunities to put a couple of pass interceptions on the ground, we can’t do that. There’s mistakes that are there but collectively we played well, played aggressively, pursued well, tackling was improved over last week. I was pleased.”

Offensively Kansas State put up 367 total yards offense, 224 yards passing and 143 yards rushing. The Wildcats only scored two touchdowns, a three yard run by DeMarcus Robinson in the second quarter and a one yard run by Charles Jones in the fourth quarter. Matthew McCrane kicked three field goals in the game including K-States first two scores, his longest was a 38 yard kick in the third quarter.

The win made Kansas State bowl eligible for the fifth consecutive season, and the 16th time under Snyder.

Finnegan Helps Royals Win Game Three of the World Series

SAN FRANCISCO (AP) – Brandon Finnegan passed his biggest test yet.kcr two

Only four months after he pitched in the College World Series, the 21-year-old reliever trotted into a troubling seventh inning, got two key outs and helped the Kansas City Royals hold off San Francisco 3-2 Friday night in Game 3 of the World Series.

Along with making history with his rapid ascent, he did more for the Royals – he gave them a 2-1 lead over the Giants.

Back in June, Finnegan said he “lived the college dream” when he threw for TCU. But no one could have envisioned what would follow.

Yet there he was at a rollicking AT&T Park, warming up when he was summoned into a tense spot to take over for proven reliever Kelvin Herrera: Runner on first, one out, Royals clinging to a one-run lead over the rallying Giants.

All of Kansas City infielders huddled behind the mound as Finnegan got loose, realizing the most important point of their season was being entrusted to the rookie left-hander.

Right before pinch-hitter Juan Perez stepped up, Finnegan walked to the back of the mound, took off his hat, looked toward the stands and tried to steady himself.

Then it was time for business, and Finnegan delivered. He retired Perez on an easy fly and struck out Brandon Crawford to end the inning.

Finnegan started to jog off the mound, stopped short of the dugout and walked the rest of the way to the bench, where he was congratulated by Herrera and several other Royals.

Picked 17th overall in the June draft, Finnegan became the first person to be in the College World Series and major league World Series in the same season.

Blue Jays Clinch Postseason Playoff Berth

Downey Wood rushed for 197 yards on 37 carries, and scored three touchdowns as the Junction City Blue Jays defeated the Wichita East Blue Aces 34-7 on Senior Night at Al Simpler Stadium.

The win guarantees Junction City a postseason berth in the Class 6A playoffs, and clinches at least a share of the District title for Junction City.

The Blue Jays are 2-0 in District play while Wichita East and Wichita Southeast are both 1-1, and Wichita North is 0-2. Junction City owns the head-to-head tiebreaker over both East and Southeast by virtue of wins over both teams. Junction City will close out the regular season against Wichita North in Wichita next Friday ( Oct. 31 ).

Blue Jay coach Randall Zimmerman was proud of his players…”the way they put together that game tonight, just played very hard.”

Wood was the workhorse from his fullback spot for Junction City in the contest. Zimmerman said the Blue Jays knew they needed to run the ball right at East. “We told our kids all week long we weren’t going to throw one pass all game. Threw a couple I guess, but we needed to get the vertical running game going and we did. Downey had the majority of the carries.”

Junction City improved to 6-2 on the season overall, while Wichita East fell to 3-5.football team

Wildcats Preparing to Stop Texas, Swopes

MANHATTAN, Kan. (AP) – There was already plenty of competition for carries at Texas, where k-state footballveteran running backs Johnathan Gray and Malcolm Brown have formed a potent one-two combination.

Now, the Longhorns are boasting a three-headed attack.

With the emergence of quarterback Tyrone Swoopes as a dangerous run-pass threat, Texas has a more diversified offense under Charlie Strong. And that’s giving Kansas State coach Bill Snyder plenty of reason to worry heading into Saturday’s showdown in Manhattan.

No. 11 Kansas State is 5-1, 3-0 and atop the Big 12. The Longhorns are 3-4, 2-2 in the conference and still looking for a signature win in Strong’s tenure.

A night after the Giants opened with a 7-1 victory for their seventh straight Series win, Gregor Blanco led off the game with a home run against hard-throwing rookie Yordano Ventura. Brandon Belt tied the score 2-all with an RBI double in the fourth.

Butler’s single off Jean Machi drove in his second run of the night and put the Royals ahead 3-2. Perez lined a two-run double to the left-center wall for a three-run lead, and Infante homered into the left-field bullpen off Hunter Strickland.

Kansas State Men’s Basketball Expected to Benefit from Added Depth

The Kansas State Men’s basketball program has added depth this year, particularly at the post position.

Thomas Gipson

Kansas State added two transfers that are both 6′ 11″ tall in Brandon Bolden and Stephen Hurt. They are expected to provide some help for Thomas Gipson at the post position.

“I’m always going to be anchored down low, that’s kind of my thing, I will never shy away from it,” says Gipson, “but guys like Stephen Hurt that can shoot, Brandon Bolden is very athletic, it’s just going to bring a different variety and a lot of depth coming off of the bench.”

Gipson also said that this years team is very diverse and should be very strong offensively. Having the depth will be important for the Wildcats and Gipson said that a number of the ones who will be coming off of the bench are capable of being starters as well.

“The people coming off of the bench can start, it’s real good. Our practices are real competitive. That’s just how we get better everyday.”

Kansas State will open the season with an exhibition game on November 9th against Washburn University at Bramlage Coliseum and will officially tip off the season against Southern Utah at 8 p.m., on Friday, Nov. 14 in the second game of a men’s and women’s doubleheader at Bramlage Coliseum.

Offensive Changes are in Store for the Kansas State Women’s Basketball Team

Last year the Kansas State Women’s basketball team was known for shooting from beyond the arc, this year they will focus more on getting to the free throw line.

First year Head Coach, Jeff Mittie explained Tuesday during K-State Jeff MittieBasketball Media Day that the Wildcats led the Big 12 in 3-point shooting last year but was near the bottom of the league for free-throw shooting.

“They shot a ton of three’s last year. We probably don’t have that same ability to do that this year, but I do think that we can get to the free-throw line better than a year ago,” said Mittie. “I do think that the inside game is developing, so those are the area’s we are going to improve.”

Defensively Mittie feels his team should be able to be solid across the board.

“They have good length, size and strength to them. I think Breanna Lewis inside can really cause some people can really cause some people some problems. They grasp that quicker than offense.”

The Wildcats will feature a roster of 10 returning letter winners and four newcomers. They will be paced by seniors Ashia Woods and Haley Texada, and sophomores Breanna Lewis and Kindred Wesemann.
