Downey Wood rushed for 197 yards on 37 carries, and scored three touchdowns as the Junction City Blue Jays defeated the Wichita East Blue Aces 34-7 on Senior Night at Al Simpler Stadium.
The win guarantees Junction City a postseason berth in the Class 6A playoffs, and clinches at least a share of the District title for Junction City.
The Blue Jays are 2-0 in District play while Wichita East and Wichita Southeast are both 1-1, and Wichita North is 0-2. Junction City owns the head-to-head tiebreaker over both East and Southeast by virtue of wins over both teams. Junction City will close out the regular season against Wichita North in Wichita next Friday ( Oct. 31 ).
Blue Jay coach Randall Zimmerman was proud of his players…”the way they put together that game tonight, just played very hard.”
Wood was the workhorse from his fullback spot for Junction City in the contest. Zimmerman said the Blue Jays knew they needed to run the ball right at East. “We told our kids all week long we weren’t going to throw one pass all game. Threw a couple I guess, but we needed to get the vertical running game going and we did. Downey had the majority of the carries.”
Junction City improved to 6-2 on the season overall, while Wichita East fell to 3-5.
