Lady Jays Get First Win

The Junction City Lady Jays picked up their first basketball win of the season by defeating Highland blue jay logoPark at the Shenk Gym 45-38 Tuesday night.

Lady Jay coach Nate Parks said his players have been working hard. “We’ve been getting better. We haven’ t been rewarded yet with a win, and it was good to get one today.”

Kealee Rains led Junction City with 11 points in the win.

Highland Park led 8-7 after the first quarter, but it was Junction City on top 19-16 at halftime, and 34-27 after three quarters.

The Lady Jays are 1-7 on the season while Highland Park fell to 3-4.

Lockett Tabbed Consensus All-American

Kansas State senior wide receiver Tyler Lockett has been named a Consensus All-American as a kick tyler lockettreturner / all-purpose player, the NCAA announced.

Lockett received the 11th Consensus All-America designation in school history and the first since wide receiver Jordy Nelson in 2007.

Lockett’s 2,296 all-purpose yards in 2014 ranked second in school history to Darren Sproles in 2003, and he also finished second to Sproles with 6,586 in his 47-game career.

Royals Give Manager an Extension

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) – The AL champion Royals and Ned Yost have agreed on a one-year contractned yost extension that will keep the manager with the franchise through the 2016 season.

Yost said after leading the Royals to an improbable pennant last season that he hoped to manage a few more years. His contract had been set to expire after the 2015 season.

Yost became the Royals’ manager in May 2010 and presided over a massive rebuilding effort that culminated with the end of a 29-year playoff drought. The Royals took the San Francisco Giants to the seventh game of the World Series before their season finally ended.

The longest-tenured manager in club history, Yost will soon become its winningest. He has 373 victories, trailing only Dick Howser (404) and Whitey Herzog (410).

KSU’s Snyder participates in college football’s title game

ARLINGTON, TX -Kansas State coach Bill Snyder, Former Ohio State coach Jim Tressel and others selected for induction to the College Football Hall of Fame were introduced and participated in the coin toss prior to the College Football National Championship game between Ohio State and Oregon.

For decades the champion of major college football was decided by polls and then the Bowl Championship Series. Monday, for the first time, the title was decided in the final game of a four-team playoff won by Ohio State 42-20.

Associated Men’s College Basketball Poll

Kentucky remains number one in the Associated Press men’s college basketball poll. basketball

The Wildcats won a pair of games in overtime last week, but are 15-0 on the season.

Virginia, 15-0, is ranked second.

The Kansas Jayhawks, 13-2, are No. 9 while Wichita State, 14-2, is ranked 13th.

Foster Named Big 12/ESPN.com National Player of the Week

Sophomore Marcus Foster earned both ESPN.com National Player of the Week and Phillips 66 Big 12 Foster-300x143Player of the Week honors on Monday after helping K-State to a pair of Big 12 wins last week.

Foster averaged 18.5 points on 50 percent shooting including 55.6 percent from 3-point range in 25 minutes per game in helping the Wildcats to a home win over TCU ( 58-53 ) and a road victory over No. 16/18 Oklahoma ( 66-63 ) in overtime. he also shot 83.3 percent ( 10-12 ) from the free throw line.

Blue Jay Wrestlers Fourth at Salina South Invitational

Coach Bob Laster said four Blue Jay wrestlers captured individual weight class championships. They included  Downey Woods at 138 pounds, Jake Bazan at 145, Jeryl Denton at 152, and Aryus Jones at 160 pounds.  All four of those wrestlers went 5-0 on the day.

Also for the Blue Jays, Max Bazan finished second at 106 pounds, Gabe Padilla fourth at 126, and Jaquan Robinson fifth at 170.

Colby won the team title with a score of 202, followed by Wichita Northwest at 190 points, Manhattan 187, and Junction City 182 points. There were 13 teams in the invitational.

Services Set for Coach Carl Taylor

The funeral for former longtime basketball coach Carl Taylor has been scheduled Friday morning from 10-11:30 a.m. at Christian Tabernacle Church of God & Christ.

Visitation hours are Thursday from 5:30 until 6:30 p.m. at E.S. Eley and Sons Funeral Home in Kansas City, Missouri, and again Friday from 9-10 a.m. at the church.

Burial will be in Leavenworth Cemetery immediately following the funeral service at 12:30 p.m.

Taylor coached the Junction City Blue Jay boys basketball program in the late 1980s and early 90s, and also had a stint as the head coach for Lady Jay softball.  He later coached at Wichita Southeast and Wichita West. His boys basketball teams at Wichita Southeast won three Class 6A state titles.

Harlem Globetrotters Coming to Bramlage Coliseum

The Harlem Globetrotters are performing Thursday evening at Bramlage Coliseum in Manhattan.basketball

You can watch the Globetrotters ball handling wizardry and trick shots when they play their old nemesis the Washington Generals.  Showtime is 7 p.m.
