Carol Smith

Carol Smith never met a stranger. If he did, they weren’t one for long. A friend noted that he “earned a level of honor and respect that few men will ever know.”

But if you knew Carol, you would know that he wouldn’t take the praise. Instead, he’d offer you a small smile, almost as if he was embarrassed to accept anyone’s gratitude and praise.

He was known for his kindness, his dedication to his family, his service to others, his willingness to help a stranger, and his humility. But maybe even more important, he was also known for his incredible head of hair. To this day, the envy of his sons and even a few of his grandsons.

Carol wasn’t a good man. He was the best man.

We will miss him terribly…the buddies he drank coffee with each morning, his friends at the Senior Center, his family and his friends. Each one of us who were privileged enough to share time with him will feel a void, but we can take comfort that he is now together again with Pat, know that he is where he wants to be, most likely taking care of her and looking over all of us, smiling down.

Carol LeRoy Smith was born February 22, 1932 to Eva and Roy Smith, in Alta Vista. He attended Alta Vista schools and graduated high school in 1950. Carol served in the United States Navy for four years, where he served as cook on the USS Samuel Roberts. Upon his return to  the area, he married Patricia Smith, who preceded him in death in 2016.

Together, Carol and Patricia had three sons, Michael (Eunice), Timothy (Karen), and Gregory (Tammy), and one daughter, Sheryl (Jack). Carol has 14 grandchildren, 18 great-grandchildren, and six great-great-grandchildren.  He is also survived by three brothers,  Kevin (Marlene) Smith, Clinton (Reta) Smith and Sheldon (Gloria) Smith; two brothers-in-law, Roger (Marian) Worcester, and Paul (Pat) Worcester and one sister-in-law Karen (Galen) Smith.

He is preceded in death by his parents, brother Galen, and son Michael.

Visitation will be Monday, October 14, from 5:00-7:00 p.m. at Simpson United Methodist Church in Alta Vista.  Funeral service will be Tuesday, October 15 at 2:00 p.m. at Simpson United Methodist Church in Alta Vista.

Memorials may be given to Simpson United Methodist Church, 508 Logan St, Alta Vista KS 66834.
