Two Will Fish for the Championship

Nolan Minor of West Virginia University and Nick Ratliff of Campbellsville University in Kentucky will battle for the championship of the 2018 Carharrt Bassmaster College Series College Bracket at Milford.

The two anglers made it through the semifinals Wednesday. Minor said in the semifinal round he was working secondary points with chunk rock, and fishing with walking bait and jerk bait in areas

“When I would have an area that I was pretty confident there were fish in it I would first make a pass through that area with the top water.” If the small mouth missed the top water bait he would return to the same area with jerk bait. “It worked twice for me today.”

Ratliff said with the wind blowing Wednesday morning it was a concern. “I made a few adjustments, caught a couple on my backup deal, I got one other area that’s kind of out of the wind if it blows in this direction. I caught my two biggest off of there and I’ve actually caught three fish off of there the last two days.”

The two anglers will begin fishing in the championship round at 6:20 a.m. Thursday. The final weigh-in will be held about 1:45 p.m. at Acorns Resort. The winner will have earned a berth in the Bassmaster Classic, considered the World Series of bass fishing.

Minor and Ratliff are the final two fishermen remaining in the tournament at Milford Lake out of a field of eight competitors that began on Tuesday.

Four Anglers Remain in Collegiate Tournament

There are four anglers remaining in the Bassmaster College Bracket Championship fishing tournament at Milford Lake.

Day one of competition saw the field of eight reduced to four fishermen. They include Nick Ratliff, Campbellsville University, Kentucky; Nolan Minor, West Virginia; Garrett Enders and Cody Huff of Bethel University in Tennessee.

They talked about their day one fishing on Milford Lake. Ratliff called it a good day. “It’ really tough, but the fishing obviously worked out.” Minor said he caught all his fish off one spot. I’m hoping there’s more. I think there’s still some fish there.”

Enders said he caught fish on a variety of baits while Huff said it was tough on the lake. “You’ve got to really capitalize on the few bites you do get. Today I didn’t that very well so I was lucky to get by. I ended up losing one, probably the biggest small mouth I’ve ever seen.

Cardinals Defeat the Royals

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — Yadier Molina broke a tie with a two-run single in the seventh inning, Tyson Ross won his St. Louis debut and the Cardinals defeated the Kansas City Royals 8-2 on Sunday to win their fifth straight, matching a season high.

The Cardinals moved eight games above .500, equaling their season high set on June 11, and are a National League-best 12-4 since July 27. Manager Mike Matheny was fired on July 14 in an attempt to jump-start the disappointing team.

Molina’s bases-loaded single in the seventh scored Harrison Bader and Patrick Wisdom, who had two hits, drove in a run and scored two in his major league debut. Wisdom’s RBI single had tied it at 2-2.

Ross, who last pitched on Aug. 3 for San Diego, was an emergency starter, replacing Luke Weaver, who was scratched after cutting his right index finger on the aluminum foil cover of his clubhouse meal on Saturday night.

Ross (7-9), who made 22 starts with the Padres before the Cardinals claimed him on waivers last week, allowed two runs on four hits and two walks in six innings.

Paul DeJong hit a two-run homer in a three-run ninth to cap the scoring.

Jason Hammel (2-12) entered in the seventh and retired none of the four batters he faced. He was charged with three runs.

Jakob Junis limited the Cardinals to three singles, walked none and struck out eight before leaving after six innings with a 2-1 lead.

Lucas Duda singled home Salvador Perez in the third to put Kansas City up 2-1. Alex Gordon scored in the first after an error by Wisdom, the first baseman.

The Royals have lost nine of 10 and are 15-46 since May 30.

Junction City Omni Wrapped Up On Sunday

The two-day Junction City Omni bicycle race competition ended Sunday afternoon at 6th and Washington in the downtown area.

Will Peterson won the overall men’s competition and Cindy Bracker the overall women’s portion of the event.

The racing began Saturday in the Milford Lake area before moving into town on Sunday. Bracker noted they enjoyed themselves in the area, noting it was a great place to race. They raced a three-and-a-half mile circuit near the lake. “There was a little hill climb in there, it was pretty amazing. Got in a break with a couple of other girls. A  break is when you’re in a big field of people, and then like a few of you jump hard and get away from the rest of the field and you form what is called a break. So we went and rotated and ended up I won that race.”

Trophies were presented to the winners at the finish line on Sunday. There was $7,500 in prize money spread between the winners.
