Largest comeback win in Kansas State basketball history

It was the biggest rally ever for a Kansas State basketball team.

K-State rallied from 21 points down to edge West Virginia ( 8-7 )  71-69 at Bramlage Coliseum Wednesday night. The Director for Men’s Basketball Communications Tom Gilberg, confirmed It was the largest comeback for a win by a Wildcat basketball team in school history, eclipsing an 18 point rally for a win over Missouri on February 19th, 1977.

The Wildcats ( 11-4 ) trailed by 21 points in the second half, but then scored 17 unanswered points and finally got their first lead at with just 2:30 remaining in the game when Xavier Sneed hit a 3-point shot and one free throw. The winning points proved to be a layup by Barry Brown with :29 seconds remaining with Sneed hitting a free throw with :3 seconds remaining in the contest to give K-State the final two point margin.  Brown led Kansas State with 29 points while Mike McGuirl came off the bench to score 18 for the Wildcats.

On the win Wildcat coach Bruce Weber said, “it is hard to even explain, to be honest.” West Virginia coach Bob Huggins said K-State made shots and the Mountaineers didn’t. ” We trusted people in some iso that did not get it done and they trusted people in iso that did get it done. It is my fault. I am in charge of picking the right guy and obviously I did not pick the right guy. It falls on my shoulders.”

Attendance for the contest was listed at 9,590.

Lawson leads KU past TCU

LAWRENCE, Kan. (AP) — Checking into a game for the first time for Kansas, freshman guard Ochai Agbaji prepared for a play that he’d only ever defended during practice.

Agbaji darted through TCU’s defense, took a lob from Quentin Grimes and recorded his first collegiate basket.

“I told myself the best way to get rid of his nerves was give him an easy basket, and maybe something to energize the crowd a little bit,” Kansas coach Bill Self said. “Because we’ve been so boring playing above the rim.”

Agbaji, a Kansas City native, had seven points and four rebounds, Dedric Lawson recorded his 47th-career-double-double with 31 points and 14 rebounds and Lagerald Vick added 12 points and four assists as No. 7 Kansas defeated No. 25 TCU 77-68 on Wednesday night.

Agbaji relinquished his redshirt eligibility for Kansas (12-2, 2-1 Big 12) on Tuesday following a season-ending injury to Udoka Azubuike. Agbaji made an immediate impact for the Jayhawks, scoring off an alley-oop on Kansas’ first possession with him on the court.

“It was really my teammates and coaches,” Agbaji said. “They put me in the right position, and they didn’t have any pressure on me to do anything. They just want me to make the right play and play to my athletic ability.”

TCU (12-2, 1-1) continued to have troubles in Allen Fieldhouse, falling to 0-7 all-time at Kansas’ home arena. The Horned Frogs turned the ball over a season-high 20 times, which is also a season high by a Kansas opponent.

“Obviously, the 20 turnovers stand out for us, and that’s how they got it done,” TCU coach Jamie Dixon said. “They were more physical than we were, got the ball inside when they needed to and you’ve got to give them credit.”

The Horned Frogs trailed 40-31 at halftime, but managed to stay in the game throughout. They got within two points of the Jayhawks with 10:33 remaining, but nine consecutive points from Lawson made it an 11-point deficit, which the Horned Frogs would ultimately fail to close.

RJ Nembhard scored a season-high 14 points for TCU while shooting 3-of-6 from behind the arc. He helped offset the absence of Jaylen Fisher, who led the Big 12 in 3-point percentage (44.1) before a right knee injury ahead of TCU’s conference opener sidelined him.

The first half saw seven lead changes before Kansas finally opened the gap to four points following a 3-pointer from Vick. Three turnovers by the Horned Frogs and a missed 3-pointer from JD Miller on TCU’s last possession of the half allowed Kansas to extend the lead to 40-31 at halftime.

TCU cut the deficit to two points following Kouat Noi’s third steal of the game followed by a layup.

Kansas extended the lead back to as many as nine points, but TCU cut it to three with under two minutes remaining. But Marcus Garrett’s offensive rebound and layup and subsequent turnover on the inbounds allowed Kansas to gain control of the game.

The Jayhawks made all four of their final free throws to finish the game.

“We’re playing at home and you should play better at home, but it’s been (bad) the last few days, obviously,” Self said. “So I thought our guys did respond to that, and I thought we played a lot better. Even if we didn’t play great, we didn’t allow TCU to play well, and I thought our defense was pretty good, especially the first half.”

Seaman Vikings defeat the Junction City Blue Jays

The Seaman Vikings ( 6-1 ) began to pull away from the Junction City Blue Jays ( 4-3 ) late in the third quarter and never trailed in the fourth quarter enroute to a 73-59 win over the Blue Jays in Topeka Tuesday night.

The Vikings had a strong inside-outside attack with post player Trey Duffey and point guard Kobe Bonner. Bonner finished with 27 points and Duffey 21 points in the victory.

Blue Jay coach Nick Perez also wasn’t happy with Junction City’s start at the beginning of the game when the Blue Jays fell behind before rallying to take the lead in the second quarter. “We’ve just got to do a better job of coming out of the gate and sustain that. Kody ( Westerhaus ) hit a three, A.J. ( Dickerson ) hit a couple of threes, and then all of a sudden we’re running. And then we get stagnant or we give up a layup. We don’t guard very good and that’s what I told the guys, we’ve got to get better defensively.

Junction City hosts Emporia on Friday.

In the girls game Seaman ( 5-2 )  led start to finish enroute to a 66-23 win over the Lady Jays ( 0-7 ). There was a running clock in the fourth quarter in that ballgame because Seaman led by 30 points or more.

The Lady Jays also host Emporia Friday night.

Clemson captures college football national championship

SANTA CLARA, Calif. (AP) — Clemson is the national champion in college football for the second time in three years after handing Alabama its most lopsided loss under head coach Nick Saban.

Trevor Lawrence passed for 347 yards and three touchdowns as the Tigers blasted the Crimson Tide, 44-16 in the College Football Playoff national championship game at Santa Clara, California. Lawrence threw TD passes to Travis Etienne, Tee Higgins and Justyn Ross to help undefeated Clemson become the first team in the AP poll era starting in 1936 to win 15 games in a season.

Etienne had three first-half TDs for Clemson, which actually trailed 16-14 in the second quarter before forging a 31-16 advantage by halftime. He finished with 86 yards on 14 carries.

A.J. Terrell brought back an interception 44 yards for a touchdown on Alabama’s opening drive. Heisman Trophy runner-up Tua Tagovailoa (TOO’-ah tuhng-oh-vy-LOH’-ah) threw a second interception and was 22 of 34 for 295 yards with two first-quarter TDs, along with minus-9 yards rushing.

Clemson is the first opponent to beat the Tide by more than 14 points since Saban became coach in 2007.

Alabama was seeking its sixth national championship in the last 10 seasons.

K-State’s Maary Lakes dismissed from women’s basketball program

Kansas State head women’s basketball coach Jeff Mittie announced Monday that sophomore center Maary Lakes has been dismissed from the program for a violation of team rules and conduct detrimental to the program.

“This is a very disappointing outcome as Maary was a student-athlete with so much potential,” Mittie said. “But, we have certain standards and expectations that all of our student-athletes must meet and when those standards are not met there are consequences. Maary was someone we thought deserved a second chance, but unfortunately, it is time for us to both move on, and we wish her nothing but the best.”

Lakes had played in 13 games this season, and averaged 1.6 points and 1.3 rebounds per game.
