Jayhawks rout West Virginia

LAWRENCE, Kan. (AP) — Devon Dotson drove through a crowd of West Virginia players, stopped in his tracks and passed the ball across the key, finding K.J. Lawson alone in the corner. Without hesitation, Lawson sunk his third 3-pointer of the game before running down the court celebrating with his brother, Dedric.

K.J. Lawson scored a season-high 15 points in 24 minutes, the first time he’s played more than 20 minutes since transferring from Memphis, and No. 14 Kansas beat the Mountaineers 78-53 on Saturday.

“I’m real happy for him, and it’s nice to see guys hang in there, and when their number is called they’re ready, and he’s been ready,” Kansas coach Bill Self said.

Dotson also scored 15 points and Dedric Lawson had 14 for the Jayhawks (20-6, 9-4 Big 12), who won their third straight as they continue to start four freshmen.

Lamont West and Chase Harler scored 11 points apiece for West Virginia (10-15, 2-10), which struggled without former starters Esa Ahmed and Wesley Harris, who were dismissed from the team earlier in the week for violating athletic department policies.

“One of the biggest things is those two guys rebounded it for us,” West Virginia coach Bob Huggins said.

Ahmed was averaging 12 points and 5.8 rebounds per game, while Harris was putting up 7.9 points and 4.5 rebounds. With the early-season injury to Sagaba Konate, the Mountaineers are now without three of their top four rebounders.

Kansas held West Virginia to a season-low 16 points at halftime, and the Mountaineers shot 33.9 percent for the game, including 3 of 23 from 3-point range. West Virginia didn’t reach double-digit scoring until 5:52 remained in the first half.

The Mountaineers finished with 24 turnovers. In West Virginia’s 65-64 win over Kansas in Morgantown on Jan. 19, the Mountaineers turned it over just 13 times.

“Just keeping a man in front, pressuring the ball, making it hard for making entry passes, make them pass the ball side to side,” Dotson said. “We put the pressure on them and I thought the bigs did a great job on cover today.”

Kansas held an opponent to 53 points or fewer for just the third time this season, and it was the first time the Jayhawks have kept a Big 12 opponent under 60 points.

The Jayhawks got the crowd excited with several flashy plays in the second half, including a fierce one-handed dunk by Ochai Agbaji. Fans at Allen Fieldhouse were also pleased to learn of No. 18 Kansas State’s 78-64 loss to No. 23 Iowa State as Kansas cruised through the final minutes.

The St. Xavier Rams ( 12-5 ) rolled to a 50-20 win over Flint Hills Christian on Senior Night at the Bradley Gym.

The Rams were in scoring by Damon Smith with 25 points.

Saint Xavier will now prepare to host a Class 1A Regional Tournament game Tuesday night against Lost Springs – Centre.

Top ranked Baylor defeats Kansas State in women’s basketball

MANHATTAN, Kan. (AP) — When top ranked Baylor is shooting well, they are hard for any team in the country to beat.

On Wednesday night, the Lady Bears shot 58 percent in a 71-48 win over Kansas State behind a double-double by Kalani Brown who had 12 points and 10 rebounds.

Chloe Jackson scored 16 points and No. 1 Baylor used a good shooting night and solid defense to rout Kansas State 71-48 on Wednesday night.

Juicy Landrum added 15 points, Lauren Cox 14 and Kalani Brown had 10 and 12 rebounds for the Lady Bears (22-1, 12-0 Big 12 Conference), who beat Kansas State for the 31st straight time. Baylor has also won 35 in a row in the regular season against Big 12 foes and 33 consecutive conference games on the road.

“My teammates made some good screens for me and got me open to help me score,” Landrum said.

Baylor dominated in almost all facets of the contest outrebounding the Wildcats 40-29, outscoring them 28-22 in the paint and had 15 more assists than K-State.

“We are big and long at a lot of positions, which helps us alter the shot by our presence,” Mulkey said. “I also thought we were really good at finding the open player. They decided they’d double team Kalani which left other’s open like Juicy and Chloe and they don’t know but we have others who can score, too.”

K-State shot 24 three-point shots, but only made four on the night after hitting 14 on Sunday in a win over Oklahoma.

“Defend the three,” Mulkey said about their game plan. “We knew they would shot it about 30 times and they almost did. We told our team to stay on the floor and don’t give up open looks. I thought we were outstanding to start the game and throughout defending the three ball.”

The Lady Bears jumped all over the Wildcats in the first quarter, outscoring them 21-9. They led 40-22 at the half as Baylor shot 17-for-28 from the field in the opening 20 minutes. Landrum had 12 of her points in the first half, making all five of her shots.

“Baylor did a lot of good things against us and we struggled all night,” Jeff Mittie said. “There just weren’t very good shots us available and we couldn’t spread the well enough. They had a good awareness of the players who were coming off good games so give them the credit.”

Baylor scored 19 points off turnovers and had six fast break points in the winning effort. The Lady Bears fast paced play is something that Mulkey does intentionally.

“We want to wear them down by running up and down the floor as much as we can,” she said. “We might not score every fast break opportunity we get, but they are going to get tired and hopefully miss shots later in the game because of it.”

Peyton Williams scored 11 points and Kayla Goth had 10 for Kansas State (15-10, 6-7).

Brown, Stokes lead K-State past Texas

AUSTIN, Texas (AP) — Kansas State ranks among the best in college basketball on defense, so the Wildcats’ are not generally cited for lack of toughness.

But that’s what their coach, Bruce Weber, did after a 67-47 loss to Texas in the Big 12 opener on Jan. 2. Nevermind that two Kansas State starters, Dean Wade and Kamau Stokes, missed the game with injuries.

“The first game we were so soft,” Weber said. “I don’t care who’s in the game. it obviously makes a difference offensively, but it shouldn’t defensively.”

Weber didn’t question his Wildcats’ grit after the rematch.

Barry Brown and Xavier Sneed each scored 16 points, and No. 18 Kansas State beat Texas 71-64 Tuesday night for its ninth straight Big 12 victory.

Three other Wildcats scored in double figures, Wade with 12 points, and Stokes and Makol Mawien with 11 apiece.

“A lot of positive things,” Weber said. “No doubt.”

Kerwin Roach led Texas with 17 points – and six turnovers — and Courtney Ramey added 10.

Kansas State (19-5, 9-2 in Big 12) converted nearly 55 percent of its field goal attempts, including 56.5 in the second half. The Wildcats limited Texas to 30 percent shooting in the second half after the Longhorns hit 55.6 in the first half.

The Wildcats accomplished that by shifting from their staple, man-to-man defense, to a zone for parts of the second half.

The Longhorns (14-11, 6-6), who scored 24 points in the paint in the first, had just eight after the break, the zone defense making it more difficult for them to access the basket. Instead, Texas launched 11 3-pointers, hitting two. Roach scored only three in the second half after hard drives to the basket produced 14 points on layups and free throws in the first half.

“Our guys have been pretty good against zone of late,” Texas coach Shaka Smart said. “But it got our guys on their heels.”

The Wildcats made runs of 8-0 and 9-0 in the second half before seven minutes were gone, the latter giving them a seven-point lead. Even so, they could not shake Texas. A long 3-pointer by Stokes with 4:30 left gave them their second seven-point lead of the half.

Texas, trying to cut the deficit to two with 3:02 left, used too much of the 30-second shot clock, Jaxson Hayes’ basket ruled to be too late after the officials went to replay.

Sneed, a junior, and Brown, a senior, combined to make four free throws during the final 1:26.

“We’re an experienced team,” Brown said. “Experience allowed us to stay poised.”

BIG PICTURE

Kansas State: The Wildcats maintained their hold on first place in the Big 12 standings. One reason is a 5-1 record on the road in conference games, an area in which they have improved the last three seasons. They are 13-11 in Big 12 road games since the beginning of 2016-17. In the previous two seasons they were 2-16 in Big 12 road games. Kansas State did get a break when Baylor was missing two starting guards, including leading scorer Makai Mason, on Saturday.

Texas: The Longhorns, a really poor 3-point shooting team earlier in the season, have recently improved, but they still ranked only 227th nationally before Tuesday with 33.4 percent accuracy. They made 17 of 43 (39.5 percent) in two games before facing Kansas State, so perhaps they were due for a bad game. They had one, hitting 4 of 19 against the Wildcats.

MISSING WILDCAT

Kansas State played without guard Cartier Diarra, its top reserve who recently suffered a broken finger on his shooting hand that will require surgery. He’s out indefinitely.

“A freak accident,” Weber said without elaborating.

K-State running back Mike McCoy medically retires

MANHATTAN, Kan. – Kansas State running back Mike McCoy announced today that he is medically retiring from football due to lingering injury issues. Despite his retirement, McCoy will remain on scholarship and will be involved with the Wildcat football program in a capacity to be determined.

“I want to thank God, my family, my teammates and fans for all the support throughout my sports career. I love my teammates and all the people I met throughout this journey,” McCoy said. “I also want to thank Coach Klieman and his staff for giving me the opportunity for my next journey. It hurts not being able to play anymore, but I’m going to trust God’s plan that He’ll be with me every step of the way in my new path!”

A product of Topeka, Kansas, McCoy played in three games during his redshirt freshman campaign of 2017, totaling 55 yards on 10 carries. He notched a season-high 33 yards with a 15-yard touchdown against Charlotte, a run in which he ran over a 49er safety on his way to the end zone. He also rushed four times for 14 yards against Central Arkansas and twice for eight yards in the Cactus Bowl win over UCLA.

Diarra out due to injury

AUSTIN, Texas – Sophomore guard Cartier Diarra sustained a hand injury that will require surgery and will be out for an undetermined period of time, head coachBruce Weber announced today (February 12).

Diarra did not make the trip to Austin, Texas, where the Wildcats face Texas (14-10, 6-5 Big 12) tonight at 8 p.m., CT at the Frank Erwin Center.

“Obviously I’m disappointed for Cartier and his family,” said head coach Bruce Weber. “He has worked hard on the court this year and I know he will work equally hard to come back strong. Our team has faced adversity many times this season and this is just another hurdle they must climb.”

A reserve in all 23 games with 7 starts, Diarra has averaged 6.3 points on 39.5 percent shooting (45-of-114), including 32.8 percent (20-of-61) from 3-point range, to go with 3.2 rebounds, 1.7 assists and 1.0 steals in 25.0 minutes per game.
