Blue Jay – Lady Jay basketball postponed
The Junction City High School basketball games against Seaman that were scheduled Tuesday night at JCHS have been postponed.
JCHS Athletic Director Matt Westerhaus says the postponement is due to growing concerns regarding travel later in the evening. Officials are working on trying to find a reschedule date.
Wildcats defeat West Virginia
A 14-0 run midway through the second half, led by a couple of 3-pointers by Xavier Sneed, gave the Wildcats (20-6, 10-3) their sixth straight conference road win.
“We’ve won these road games and you do that with experience,” Kansas State coach Bruce Weber said. “You got guys who’ve been through it and stay poised. They stay focused and stay disciplined on defense.”
Down seven with just under 13 minutes to play, Lamont West led the Mountaineers (10-16, 2-10) to a quick 7-0 run to tie it up at 42 with under 12 to play.
K-State responded with the 14-0 run. WVU could not recover.
“We were getting a lot of shutouts, trying to hold them to one shot, get the rebound and push it,” Brown said.
Sneed added 19 points for Kansas State, including five 3-pointers. Dean Wade, who was questionable going into the game, scored 10 points and grabbed six rebounds.
Lamont West led West Virginia with 16 points. Derek Culver picked up his sixth double-double of the season with 13 points and 11 rebounds. Brandon Knapper scored 10 points.
West Virginia finished 18 of 52 from the field.
“You’re not going to win shooting 34 percent,” coach Bob Huggins said.
The Mountaineers outrebounded the Wildcats 35-31.

Blue Jays use the alley-oop play to beat Topeka West
The Junction City Blue Jays used an inbound alley-oop pass play from Darrin Battiste to Qua’vez Humphreys with seventh-tenths of a second remaining to defeat the Topeka West Chargers 86-84 in the capitol city.
Battiste tossed above the defense toward the rim, Humphreys leaped up and grabbed it and fired a shot off of the backboard for the game winning two points just ahead of the final buzzer Tuesday night. Junction City had rallied from a 21-point second half deficit to get the win, their tenth of the season.
Humphreys told JC Post, “Darrin threw a beautiful pass, had a good screen from Aaron ( hamilton ). We just executed it.” The play is one the Blue Jays practice on a regular basis. Also, for Junction City A. J. Dickerson scored 30 points but went down with a knee injury late in the game. He was able to walk a few minutes later, however.

In the girls varsity game the Lady Jays turned in their best performance of the season to date, but came up short against Topeka West 51-44. It was a game that saw Junction City leading at one time 36-26. But in the final quarter Junction City scored just eight points as the Chargers rolled on past them to the win.

Both Junction City teams are hosting Topeka Seaman at the Shenk and Fiffe Gym this evening. The game times have been moved up due to anticipated winter weather. The girls varsity and JV boys games will tip off at 4:30 p.m. in the Shenk and Fiffe gyms respectively. The boys varsity game is scheduled for 6 p.m. in the Shenk Gym while the girls JV game will be at 6 p.m. in the Fiffe Gym.
K-State women’s basketball upsets number 15 Texas
AUSTIN, Texas (AP) — Kayla Goth scored 15 points, Peyton Williams posted a double-double and Kansas State overcame a 14-point second-half deficit to upset No. 15 Texas 69-60 on Sunday.
Williams finished with 13 points and 14 rebounds, Jasauen Beard and Rachel Ranke each scored 11 and Kali Jones grabbed 11 rebounds for the Wildcats (16-10, 7-7 Big 12). Kansas State has won three of its last four following a three-game skid.
Beard’s 3-pointer with 5:29 left gave the Wildcats a 54-52 lead and they never trailed again. Texas led 13-7 at the end of the first quarter as the Wildcats made just 2 of 16 shots. The shooting script turned in the second quarter when Kansas State went 8 of 16 and Texas just 4 of 17. The Wildcats used a 15-5 run that started when Beard hit a jumper and a layup and they led 27-26 at halftime.
Texas came out hot after intermission with a 16-1 run and led 42-28 when Charli Collier made a layup with 5:18 left in the third. The Wildcats countered with a 17-4 run and ended the quarter down 46-45.
Destiny Littlejohn led the Longhorns (20-6, 10-4) with 16 points, Danni Williams 14 and Collier 12.
Roller Derby team scrimmages

The Stone Cold Foxes held their Red and Black scrimmage on Saturday night at Spin City.

The Junction City Blue Jays finished 9th out of 18 teams in the Garden City wrestling regional on Saturday. Junction City scored 73 points while first place Derby finished with 229.5. Manhattan was second with a score of 220.5 points.
For the Blue Jays, Terrance Adeleye finished fifth at 195 pounds and C.J. Neuman 5th at 152 pounds. Matthew Whitton of Junction City finished sixth at 138 pounds while Zane Thornton was sixth at 126 points. Sadiki Smith was 8th at 170 pounds and Blayne Danford 8th at 120 pounds. All of those wrestlers have qualified for the Class 6A State Tournament next Friday and Saturday in Park City.
Iowa State’s 3-point barrage beats Kansas State
MANHATTAN, Kan. (AP) — Iowa State was drilled at home by TCU a week ago, then had to sit around without another game until Saturday, left to brood over its uphill climb to get back into the Big 12 race.
The Cyclones finally released that pent-up angst against No. 18 Kansas State.
Lindell Wigginton hit five 3-pointers and scored 23 points, Talen Horton-Tucker buried six 3s and had 20, and the No. 23 Cyclones pulled away late for a 78-64 victory over the Big 12-leading Wildcats on Saturday to answer a chorus of critics that had been surfaced over the past seven days.
“Soft on defense. Not moving the basketball. Not running the floor. Not sharing. Not being engaged in huddles. Not executing out of timeouts,” Cyclones coach Steve Prohm said, reflecting on what needed to change after the TCU loss. “We had a list of things that weren’t very good.”
Oh, the Cyclones (19-6, 8-4) were quite good against the Wildcats.
They had three double-figure scorers with Marial Shayok contributing 13 points and 13 boards. They went 14 of 24 from beyond the 3-point line, shooting right over Kansas State’s vaunted defense. And they dished out 19 assists while turning it over just 10 times.
“When our A-team shows up,” Prohm said, “we have a chance to do good things. The things the B-team does, we have to keep them as far away as we can.”
Barry Brown had 23 points for the Wildcats, but he didn’t get a whole lot of help. The rest of the team was a combined 2 of 13 from the 3-point arc and 11 of 34 from the field.
Making matters worse, the short-handed Wildcats — already without top backup Cartier Diarra because of hand surgery — lost senior forward Dean Wade with 9:18 to go. The preseason Big 12 player of the year limped off the floor and spent the remainder of the game sitting on the end of the bench.
Wade missed several weeks earlier this season with a right foot injury.
“He had some soreness in his foot all week. He didn’t practice. He was in a boot,” Kansas State coach Bruce Weber said. “It’s not the same injury as before. He tweaked it. … We’ll just have to see.”
The Wildcats’ half-court defense held Iowa State in check until late in the first half, when Horton-Tucker spoiled even good coverage. The freshman guard hit four 3s and finished with 14 first-half points, one of them a fade-away from well beyond the arc as the shot clock expired.
“What are you going to do?” Weber said. “It seemed like they had us spread out, they got us down the line. It’s the same team we held to 57 at their place. They’re good offensively.”
Iowa State was poised to carry a big lead into the break, but Nick Weiler-Babb’s miss with a couple seconds left gave Brown a chance to unload a 3-pointer from just inside the mid-court line.
It rattled home, giving Brown 16 points in the half and drawing Kansas State within 38-31.
Horton-Tucker answered out of the locker room with a 3-pointer from about six feet beyond the arc, and the Cyclones still led 50-41 when Wigginton buried a 3 with 13 1/2 minutes to go.
Kansas State pecked away at its deficit, pulling within 57-56 on Mike McGuirl’s follow shot with 7 minutes left. But the Cyclones continued to respond with a barrage of 3s, and it was Wigginton whose two fall-away 3s in succession allowed them to regain control.
They put the game away when Cameron Lard threw down a dunk with 2:50 to go, and Horton-Tucker buried one last 3-pointer from in front of his celebrating bench.
“We just battled the whole game,” Wigginton said. “When everyone was doubting us, we came in and responded every time. We’ve got toughness. We didn’t show it last week but we did today.”
