Jayhawks win in overtime

FORT WORTH, Texas (AP) — Even when Kansas won games earlier this season against three Top 25 teams, the Jayhawks hadn’t celebrated in the locker room like they did after an overtime victory at TCU.

They are a much different team now than when they beat Tennessee, Michigan State and Villanova. Coach Bill Self and the Jayhawks are now starting four freshmen.

Devon Dotson, one of those freshmen, scored a season-high 25 points with six free throws in the final 40 seconds of overtime and No. 14 Kansas won 82-77 on Monday night after blowing a 12-point lead in the second half.

“That’s the best locker room we’ve had all year by far,” Self said. “That was a game in which we played really well for the most part, then we screwed it up, then somehow or another were able to pull it back. We were fortunate that it went overtime after we screwed it up, and then we played really well in OT.”

The Jayhawks (19-6, 8-4 Big 12) never trailed in overtime. They broke the final tie on K.J. Lawson’s jumper with 1:09 left before Dotson sealed it at the free-throw line.

Dotson also had 10 rebounds for one of the three double-doubles for Kansas. Ochai Agbaji had 20 points and 11 rebounds, while Dedric Lawson, a junior and the only non-freshman starter, had 14 points and 10 rebounds.

“Devon was really tough, one of the toughest guys on the court,” Agbagi said of the only player in the game for all 45 minutes.

“You can’t take him out, and he got tired,” Self said.

TCU (17-7, 5-6), trying to win consecutive games against Top 25 teams for the first time in school history, had a 13-0 run late in regulation and took a 69-65 lead on JD Miller’s two free throws with 2:07 left. The Frogs didn’t score again until overtime.

Blue Jays fall in the capitol city

The Junction City Blue Jay boys basketball team ( 9-8 ) lost to Topeka High ( 16-2 ) 57-48 in Topeka Monday night.

The Blue Jays missed a number of layups and free throws, especially in the first half. Convert on those and Junction City could have opened a big lead. Junction City coach Nick Perez noted that the Blue Jays got 11 defensive stops in a row in the first half but came away with just two points. “We missed some shots, missed some layups, we turned the ball over. They’re very athletic and they’re very long.

The game was close until the fourth quarter when the Trojans outscored the Blue Jays 29-18.

Junction City will play at Topeka West on Friday night.

Blue Jay wrestling coach out temporarily

Junction City Blue Jay wrestling coach Bob Laster is recovering from a medical condition and has been temporarily unavailable this past week to coach the wrestling team.

Laster is now at home following a hospital stay, but he confirmed for JC Post that he hopes to return to coaching in time to guide the Blue Jay wrestling team in the state tournament on February 22nd and 23rd. In the meantime the Blue Jay assistant wrestling coaches are overseeing the team.

The Blue Jays will compete in a regional tournament this Friday and Saturday, February 15th and 16th.

Elisa Robinson captures state wrestling title

Elisa Robinson of Junction City High School has captured the girls state wrestling championship in the 182 pound wrestling category. The state tournament was held in McPherson on Saturday.

It was the third consecutive state wrestling championship for Robinson during her high school career.

Also in the 120 Pound C category, Zahirah Tanaka of Junction City finished in second place.

Blue Jay bowling results

The Junction City Blue Jay boys bowling team won their quadrangular at JC Bowl on Friday.

According to Blue Jay athletics twitter feed the Blue Jays finished first in the team competition followed by Topeka West, Hayden and Highland Park.  In the girls competition Topeka West won the team title while Junction City was second and Highland Park third.

In the boys competition Ciaran Pricket finished first, and on the girls side Savannah Adams was second.

Wildcats win at Baylor

AP-BKC–Kansas St-Baylor

WACO, Texas (AP) — Kamau Stokes scored 20 points and Big 12-leading Kansas State used a big run late to finally get past undermanned Baylor for a 70-63 victory Saturday night.
The Wildcats (18-5, 8-2 Big 12) took the lead for good on a 3-pointer by Cartier Diarra with just over 6 minutes left, the start of an 11-0 run that included a 3-pointer by Stokes after his defensive rebound. Stokes later sealed the game with four consecutive free throws in the final 31 seconds.

Barry Brown had 13 points and six assists for K-State, which is alone atop the Big 12 standings after No. 17 Iowa State (18-6, 7-4) lost at home to TCU earlier Saturday. Dean Wade had 12 points and Diarra 10.

Baylor (15-8, 6-4), already without two players out for the season with injuries, was missing starting senior guards Makai Mason, its leading scorer, and King McClure. Mason (bruised foot) and McClure (knee) had both played in a loss Wednesday at Texas that snapped the Bears’ six-game winning streak.

A 3-pointer by Brown with 3:20 left wrapped up the 11-0 run by the Wildcats, and was part of a bigger 15-2 spurt.

Devonte Bandoo had 15 points to lead Baylor, including a late 3-pointer and then two free throws to get within 64-61 with 35 seconds left. But Stokes then made four free throws in eight seconds.

Freddie Gillespie and Jared Butler each had 13 points for the Bears.

BIG PICTURE

Kansas St.: The Wildcats have won eight Big 12 games in a row, their longest conference winning streak since 11 in a row in the Big Eight in 1974. During the stretch, they did have a 65-53 loss at Texas A&M in the SEC/Big 12 Challenge.

Baylor: Going into a week when the Bears could have gone to the top of the Big 12, they instead suffered more injuries and two losses.

POLL IMPLICATIONS

Kansas State, which this week also beat instate rival and No. 13 Kansas, has a chance to get ranked for the first time since falling out of the poll Dec. 17. The Wildcats were the preseason No. 12 team and were ranked in the first six polls, falling out from No. 25 after losing consecutive games in mid-December.

OPENING TIP

  • Kansas State (17-5, 7-2 Big 12) begins the second half of Big 12 play with a trip to Waco, Texas on Saturday night to take on fellow Big 12 challenger Baylor (15-7, 6-3 Big 12) at the Ferrell Center. The game will tip at 5:05 p.m., CT on ESPN2 with Rich Hollenberg (play-by-play) and Tim Welsh (analyst) on the call. It is the first of back-to-back road games in a 4-game span for the Wildcats, which plays at Texas (13-10, 5-5 Big 12) on Tuesday night at the Frank Erwin Center.
  • K-State enters Saturday’s game in first place in the Big 12, just a half-game ahead of No. 17/16 Iowa State (18-5, 7-3 Big 12), one game ahead of Baylor and a game and a half ahead of No. 18/18 Texas Tech (18-5, 6-4 Big 12) and No. 13/14 Kansas (17-6, 6-4 Big 12). Seven of the 10 Big 12 schools have at least 4 league wins, as all teams have reached the midway point of the 18-game schedule.
  • Paced by senior Barry Brown, Jr.’s game-tying 18 points, four Wildcats scored in double figures to help end an 8-game losing streak to archrival and No. 13/14 Kansas by a score of 74-67 on Tuesday night at Bramlage Coliseum. K-State has now won 7 consecutive games in Big 12 play for the first time in nearly 10 years and the first time since also winning 7 in a row from Feb. 2 to Feb. 27, 2010 to tie for the most consecutive league games won in the Big 12 era. It not only marked the first win by senior class of Brown, Kamau Stokes and Dean Wade against the Jayhawks, it represented the 80th of their careers (80-47) since joining the program in 2015-16.
  • A Brown 3-pointer gave K-State the lead for good nearly 4 minutes into the second half, but Kansas challenged several times down the stretch, including 64-61 with 1:42 remaining. The Wildcats responded each time, including a corner 3-pointer by junior Xavier Sneed with 75 seconds to play that ignited a 7-0 run to finish off the victory. Although, they allowed Kansas to scored 67 points on 46.2 percent shooting, the squad scored 22 points off an opponent-high 23 turnovers. It marked the ninth time this season that the Wildcats have scored 20 or more points off turnovers.
  • Baylor saw its 6-game winning streak come to an end in its 84-72 loss at Texas on Wednesday night, as the hot-shooting Longhorns connected on 55.1 percent from the field. One of the more inspiring stories in college basketball, the Bears have found the right mix of players after injuries derailed its non-conference season to win 6 of its last 8 Big 12 games. They are led by Big 12 Newcomer of the Year candidate Makai Mason, who leads the way in both scoring (16.1 ppg.) and assists (3.0 apg.).
  • The K-State/Baylor series has been one of the most competitive with the Bears holding a narrow 17-16 edge since the start of Big 12 play in 1997. Although the Wildcats have won 4 straight in the series, including consecutive games at the Ferrell Center, the two teams have split the last 10 meetings. Eight of the last 13 meetings in Waco have been decided by 3 points or less, while 3 of those meetings have gone to overtime.
  • K-State, which has struggled from the 3-point line this season ranking ninth in the Big 12 in both makes per game (6.8) and percentage (32.8), has found its rhythm from long range in the last 2 games, knocking down a combined 26 treys on 53 attempts (49.1 percent). The 26 made 3-pointers are the most in a 2-game stretch since connecting on 32 in games against Fresno State (school-record 23) and Vanderbilt (9) on March 24 and 28, 1994.

In the girls varsity contest about 6 p.m. Highland Park goes in with a record of 10-6 while Junction City is 0-16. In the boys game at about 7:30 p.m. the Blue Jays bring a  9-6 record into the contest while Highland Park is 1-15.

The Jayhawks’ Lagerald Vick to take personal leave of abscence

LAWRENCE, Kan. (AP) — Kansas guard Lagerald Vick is taking a leave of absence from the basketball program, leaving the No. 13 Jayhawks even more short-handed as they face an uphill climb to a 15th straight Big 12 title.

Jayhawks coach Bill Self said in a statement Thursday night that Vick has “some personal matters that require his immediate attention.” Self said there is no timetable for his return.

The Jayhawks are 17-6 and 6-4 in the Big 12, leaving them 1 1/2 games behind Kansas State.

The mercurial Vick, who has appeared in 117 games for the Jayhawks, turned pro after last season before deciding to return to Kansas. He has started 20 of 23 games this season, averaging 14.1 points and four rebounds while providing a young backcourt with veteran leadership.

Kansas is already playing without starting center Udoka Azubuike, who was lost for the season to wrist surgery, and defensive stopper Marcus Garrett, who is dealing with a sprained ankle.
