Infante’s Jaw Sprained

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) – Kansas City’s Omar Infante has a sprained jaw and needed six stitches to close a cut opened when he was hit by a Heath Bell pitch.baseball

Infante was injured during the seventh inning of Monday’s 4-2 win over Tampa Bay and was sent to the University of Kansas Medical Center.

The Royals said Tuesday that the second baseman did not sustain a concussion. The team said he will be evaluated over the following two days and he was not likely to miss a significant amount of playing time.

Royals – Infante Beaned

Infante immediately left Monday night’s game against the Rays in the seventh inning, walking off under his own power with Royals trainers Nick Kenney and Kyle Turner. Infante, hit in the left cheek, was spitting blood and had blood on his forehead as trainers held a towel to his face.

Danny Valencia ran for Infante, who signed a $30.25 million, four-year contract with the Royals in December after hitting .318 last season for Detroit.

Royals Defeat Rays

ARLINGTON, Texas (AP)- On Monday night, Connecticut’s men’s team captured the national championship. On Tuesday night, the UConn women get their turn as they try to complete a basketball championship double for the first time since the Huskies teams did it in 2004.

Shabazz Napier scored 22 points and Connecticut won its second NCAA title in four years, kcrwith a 60-54 win over Kentucky. Napier added six rebounds, three assists and three steals.

Napier is among three UConn seniors who were part of the Huskies’ 2011 title. That trio stayed after coach Jim Calhoun’s retirement even when the Huskies were ineligible for the NCAA tournament last season.

They came back strong in coach Kevin Ollie’s second season, and the Huskies went all the way to their fourth overall title.

Kentucky with five freshmen starters, never led. The Wildcats missed 11 of 24 free throws, while the Huskies were perfect on 10 tries.

James Young had team highs of 20 points and seven rebounds for Kentucky.

Royals Put Two Pitchers on the Disabled List

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) – Left-handed relievers Tim Collins and Francisley Bueno have been put on the 15-day disabled list by the Kansas City Royals.kcr

The Royals recalled right-hander Michael Mariot and left-hander Donnie Joseph from Triple-A Omaha on Monday.

Collins, who walked two and gave up a hit while retiring only one batter against the Chicago White Sox on Sunday, is out with a flexor strain in his left elbow.

Bueno, who allowed a double and a single while getting two outs Sunday, has a sprained little finger on his left hand.

 

Kansas Defeats Kansas State

The Kansas Jayhawks used a home run in the second inning and a sacrifice fly in the fifth to build a 2-0 lead over Kansas State.   The lead held up in a 2- 1 KU victory at Tointon Family Stadium in Manhattan.baseball

With the win the Jayhawks took two out of three in the weekend series.

According to k-statesports.com it was K-State’s first series loss against a Big 12 opponent since April of 2012 against Oklahoma State.

Nate Griep took the pitching loss to fall to 3-1 on the season. KU’s Frank Duncan was the winning pitcher.

Sale Shuts Down Royals

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) – Chris Sale gave up four singles in eight scoreless innings as the Chicago White Sox defeated the Kansas City Royals 5-1 on Sunday.kcr

Alexei Ramirez and Tyler Flowers each drove in a pair of runs as the White Sox won the series finale after dropping the first two games.

Sale (2-0) struck out six and walked one. In his previous four starts against the Royals, the White Sox had backed him with one run, enough to beat James Shields 1-0 in the 2012 opener.

Shields (0-1) took the loss in this one, too, giving up a run on five hits, striking out six, walking none and hitting two batters in seven innings.

 

Wildcats Shut Out Kansas

wildcatLevi MaVorhis threw his second shutout of the season  as Kansas State defeated Kansas in Big 12 baseball at Tointon Family Stadium in Manhattan Friday.

MaVorhis finished the game with four strikeouts and two walks.

According to k-statesports.com the shutout for Kansas State was the largest in the all-time series against KU since a 10-0 win April 11, 1969.

Game two of the three-game weekend series is scheduled at two p.m. Saturday at Tointon Family Stadium.

Lady Jays Claim First, Blue Jays Fourth in JCHS Invitational

One half point was the difference between first and second place in the girls team standings at the Junction City High School Invitational track meet.

Junction City finished first in the seven-team field with 124 points while Shawnee Heights had 123.5.

Highlights for Junction City included first place finishes by Rosie Hollis in the 1600 meters in 5:39.40, Tyra Gosha in the 400 meter run in 1.03.01, Myrissa Humphreys in the 300 meter hurdles in 50.04.

Hollis knew she would tired when she to the 1600 meters because she had just finished running in the four by 800. “So I wasn’t really that confident about it, but I knew I had to get it done. ” Hollis took the lead in the race in the third lap, “and I just went out hard and gave it my all.”

Also capturing first place for the Lady Jays were the four by 800 relay team of Deisjambra Bisio, Brianna Pace, Rosie Hollis, and Autumn Sifuentes in 10:24.50, the four by 400 relay team of Tykayius Roberson, Tyra Gosha, Myrissa Humphreys, and Samonte Jones in 4:25.89.

The Blue Jay boys scored 88.5 points to finish fourth out of seven teams. Shawnee Heights finished first with a score of 110 points.

For the Blue Jays Scott Keith won the high jump with a top mark of 6 feet, Byrale Carter the long jump at 20′ 1 1/2, and Tyrik Nas-Carmikle the 100 meter dash in 11.99.

Lady Jay Softball Drops Close Games to Topeka West

Topeka West rallied from behind in both the ends of a softball doubleheader at Cleary Field to defeat the Junction City Lady Jays 7-6 and 5-4.jc softball

In the first game Topeka West got a grand slam home run in the top of the 7th inning to jump ahead by one run. Lady Jay coach Nancy Detmer noted her team had a hard time recovering from that. “They gave it a valiant effort there at the end. We had an opportunity in the bottom of the seventh to come back and win that game, and we just couldn’t put the ball in the hole.”

In that game Katie Hollibaugh of Junction City also hit a home run.

In the second contest Junction City led 4-1 going into the top of the 6th inning but couldn’t hold the lead as the Chargers scored four runs in that inning.

Junction City, 0-2, will host Clay Center on Tuesday.
