Royals clinch playoff spot with win over White Sox

CHICAGO (AP) – Kansas City’s long postseason drought is over.

The Royals clinched a playoff spot for the first time in 29 years, beating the royalsChicago White Sox 3-1 on Friday night behind seven scoreless innings from Jeremy Guthrie.

Kansas City secured at least a wild card and ended the longest active postseason drought among the major North American sports leagues. Not since George Brett led the Royals to a World Series victory over the St. Louis Cardinals in 1985 had they reached the playoffs.

Small-market Kansas City endured more than its share of losing in recent years. But it contended into September last season and kicked down the playoff door on Friday.

Longhorns, Jayhawks Have Plenty in Common

LAWRENCE, Kan. (AP) – If Texas coach Charlie Strong needs anybody to commiserate with these jayhawkdays, he needs look no further than the sleepy college town of Lawrence and the guy coaching Kansas.

When Charlie Weis took over the Jayhawks a couple of years ago, a veritable purge ensued. Just about every day, it seemed, another player was suspended or dismissed from the program. Weis wanted to establish a certain culture, and those who didn’t buy in had an alternative: leave.

In short, it’s exactly what Strong has been doing in his first year at Texas.

Nine players have been dismissed from the program, and two more will still be suspended when the Longhorns (1-2) visit the Jayhawks (2-1) in the Big 12 opener for both teams Saturday.

K-State Tries to Bounce Back Against UTEP

MANHATTAN, Kan. (AP) – There are certain fundamentals that Bill Snyder stresses, and one of OU VS KSTATE FOOTBALL
them is executing in the final 20 yards before the goal line.

Kansas State’s performance there last week had the old coach seeing, well, a whole lot of red.

Five times the Wildcats (2-1) reached the red zone. Twice they put points on the board in a 20-14 loss to fifth-ranked Auburn.

UTEP (2-1), which heads to Kansas State on Saturday, has had no such trouble.

The Miners have scored on 13 of 14 trips inside the 20 this season, and that includes 11 touchdowns. That puts their efficiency rating among the best in the nation.

The Junction City Blue Jay football team will try to return to winning ways Friday night when theyRANDALL ZIMMERMAN play at Seaman.

Blue Jay coach Randall Zimmerman said the Vikings play well together with big, strong, physical kids at every position. “They’re going to compete every single snap of the game.”

Charles Could be Ready Monday Night

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) – Chiefs coach Andy Reid expects star running back footballJamaal Charles to be ready for Monday night’s game against the New England Patriots.

Charles was back on the practice field Thursday after missing last week’s game against the Dolphins with a high ankle sprain. Charles practiced a bit last week and made the trip to Miami, but he spent the game on the sideline in street clothes.

Reid said that a decision on Charles won’t be made until closer to game time, but he sounded optimistic that one of the game’s most dynamic players will be on the field.

Still, there’s a good chance Charles will share carries with Knile Davis once he returns. Davis ran for 132 yards and a touchdown against the Dolphins.
