Chiefs Sign Fullback Sherman to an Extension

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) – The Chiefs have signed fullback Anthony Sherman, who has chiefs logohelped pave the way for one of the NFL’s top rushing offenses, to a three-year contract extension.

A person familiar with the deal told The Associated Press on Monday that Sherman can earn up to $7 million over the life of the contract. The person spoke on condition of anonymity because the Chiefs did not reveal the terms of the contract.

Sherman has started 21 of the 51 games he’s played in over the past four seasons. The past two have been spent in Kansas City, where has been the lead blocker for Jamaal Charles.

Sherman has also proven valuable as a short-yardage receiver out of the backfield, catching 36 passes for 315 yards and two touchdowns in his career.

K-State Basketball Update

basketballK-State men’s basketball coach Bruce Weber met with the media Tuesday.

Head Coach Bruce Weber
On the last couple of weeks…
“We have had some injuries. The other day we tried to scrimmage, but we did not have enough people for that so we ended up going 4-on-4. It ended up being a good thing because the guys got a lot of running in. Some days you need to run, some days you need to teach and some days you need toughness. We are in those dog days of practice, whether you are in football or basketball. They want games, but are they ready for them? I do not think they are but you have to play them and that’s part of it. First is to get guys healthy, second is to start figuring out roles. We (coaches) know what the roles are but it is them figuring it out and taking pride in their roles. I think that will be a big step with any team and it will be a big step with us.”
On separation at the point guard position
“I do not think there is any separation. One day one, one the next. I hope they become a really tough two-headed monster. They both have great quickness, obviously one can push the ball, and the other can shoot better. I know I said it could be a question [for us] but I hope the position becomes a strength for us. I even told them that they can play together. Nigel (Johnson) can shoot the ball pretty well and then you get those two together and then it is a whole different level of pressure for people.”

On the new video board…
“You walk in there you are in awe of it, it is unbelievable, and it is great for the fans. It adds a whole new dynamic to the arena, there is no doubt. But once you start playing, you do not notice. We have practiced in there, in the practice gym [most every day] and in ballrooms of hotels. Once you start playing you forget about all of that stuff.”

Senior Forward Thomas Gipson
On preseason practice…
“It is going real well. Transitioning to real practice, I feel like everyone is getting real comfortable. Our defense is real good right now, and we could be a lot better but with all the pieces we have right now we are doing fine. All we could do is take a step forward.”
On the young players learning…
“They have learned a lot. Coaches will continue to get on them about things and what is expected of them. They know what to do on offense and defense, and know their roles.”

On point guard battle…
“Going back and forth, day-in and day-out. That is really the only position that does not get breaks.  Pushing each other, they go hard, and it will benefit both.”

Sophomore Guard Marcus Foster
On playing the exhibition…
I am excited to put the jersey back on and get back out there. Play against other people and not my own teammates.”

On the summer…
“It was eventful. Played at a Nike point guard camp, and hang out with a bunch of pros. It was really just learning a lot about myself, the player I could become.”

On being a marked man…
Just keep doing what I do. I had a good year last year but I do not want people to worry about that, just worry about this year, because I will have an even better year. If I stick to what I do and stick to my team and do whatever they need.”

Letter from A. D. John Currie – Vanier Football Complex Update

Great things are happening across campus with an all-time record enrollment and an exciting falljohn currie season for all K-State sports. However, today’s letter will be completely devoted to an important update on the future of K-State Athletics and Wildcat Football!

In just five weeks we will officially break ground on what I believe will prove to be the most significant facility transformation in our history – the new Vanier Football Complex – which will be scheduled for completion in time for the 2015 season!

If you have been on campus this fall, you have seen the very visible signs of the excitement and momentum that has grown throughout the University community. President Schulz’s visionary K-State 2025 plan is becoming a reality all around us with $167.1 million in planned academic construction in FY15 now underway, highlighted by the new College of Business building, Engineering expansion, Purple Masque Theatre, the Berney Family Welcome Center at Memorial Stadium, Wefald Residence Hall, KSU Foundation building and other projects transforming our beautiful campus. I am very proud of the hand-in-hand work of our Ahearn Fund staff with our KSU Foundation colleagues who, thanks to our donors, achieved record fundraising levels again this year. Still, consistent with Coach Snyder’s mantra of improving a little bit every day, we know that yesterday’s records are tomorrow’s expectations!

You may have also noticed that construction trailers have mobilized next to the Vanier Football Complex, another sign of the tremendous progress made on the path to building a new future for the north end of Bill Snyder Family Stadium. Due to great collaboration with our construction partners – world-renown architects from Populous, along with contractors Mortenson and GE Johnson – we remain on schedule to complete construction of the VFC by August 2015. We are very appreciative of the patience of Coach Snyder, and our football, sports medicine, equipment, strength, and academic staffs as our transition team plans the temporary accommodations to enable us to serve K-State student-athletes during the construction period. On a daily basis we witness the impact our new Ahearn Fund Student-Athlete Performance Table in the West Stadium Center has had on the experience of our student-athletes, which gets us even more excited to take another transformational step forward with the new Vanier Football Complex. The VFC will feature more than twice as much Academic Learning Center space, as well as provide an enclosed connection to the Performance Table.

The massive new Strength & Conditioning Center will provide a more efficient space for student-athletes from multiple sports to train as well as a dramatic visual improvement as evidenced by an increase from nine-foot ceilings in our current facility to 30-foot ceilings in the new venue. This theme of high ceilings and open spaces will be carried throughout the venue as we grow from a two-story building to a four-story complex.

Inside Bill Snyder Family Stadium, the newly enclosed seating bowl will improve the grass roots family seating experience and bring an even louder and more intimidating home field advantage. Fans throughout the entire stadium will benefit as we finally remove the “mini-tron” (as we affectionately call it in the Athletics Department) and replace it with a new high-definition video board in the northwest corner that will be larger than the current south end board. Finally, the pride we will all feel as we approach Kimball Avenue and see the K-State limestone and the level of finish you helped establish with the WSC will shape the first impression for K-State recruits for years to come.

Please click here for the latest plans and images provided by the architects at Populous!

As we complete the final construction bid packages and settle on a Guaranteed Maximum Price with Mortenson and GE Johnson, we are reminded on a daily basis of our total project budget – currently projected to be $69 million including all equipment and technology. As you may know, consistent with our commitment to fiscal responsibility, we do not plan additional long-term debt with this project. In fact, our staff is working harder than ever to remain below our current fiscal year operations budget so we can complete the VFC in the same first-class manner you have helped establish with the Basketball Training Facility, WSC and Intercollegiate Rowing Center, among other projects.

Still, in order to properly complete this project and do it right, we need to achieve our Vanier Football Challenge Campaign goal of $50 million in philanthropic support. I am very excited to announce to you today that we have currently achieved an important milestone of more than $45 million in gifts and pledges!

As you can see, we have tremendous momentum in our campaign, and we are so grateful for the investments of all of these great K-Staters into the future of K-State Football. Please know that we are working hard to achieve both our campaign goal and to design and build a facility that all K-Staters will be proud of for generations to come. As we move into the latter stages of the campaign and construction planning, the winning-edge difference will come in the quality and finishes of this transformational facility. Just as we did with the BTF and WSC we want the finishes of this facility to visually speak to K-State’s determination to be at the forefront of the intercollegiate athletics landscape.

The Vanier Football Complex will be funded completely by private capital gift donations and additional athletics department revenue to ensure we maintain our level of fiscal responsibility. For those wanting to get involved or support the Vanier Football Complex project, the best way to do so is to join the Ahearn Fund, K-State’s National Fund for Student-Athlete Excellence. The Ahearn Fund not only supports scholarships for our 458 student-athletes, but also provides critical funding in areas such as sports medicine and academics, as well as capital for this transformational facility.  If you are already a member, thank you! If not, please click hereto learn more about how you can support this project and K-State’s student-athletes.

In the coming weeks, please look for a series of special announcements recognizing our leadership contributors to the Vanier Football Challenge Campaign. We owe these K-Staters a great deal of gratitude for believing in the vision of this transformational project and the impact it will have on all K-State student-athletes for decades to come.

We also look forward to having you join us as we celebrate their generosity at a special groundbreaking ceremony during the K-State vs. KU football game on Saturday, November 29, giving us just eight months for completion by August, 2015. While this is another aggressive and challenging schedule, I’m confident that with hard work and dedication to making progress every day, we have the right team in place to make it happen.

I am very grateful for the support of the K-State nation as we endeavor together to honor what Coach Snyder, the Vanier family, and many others have done to complete a successful VFC through the Vanier Football Challenge campaign.

Let’s Finish! and…..

Go Cats!

John

Royals Extend Qualifying Offer to Shields

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) – The Royals extended a $15.3 million qualifying offer Monday tokcr two right-hander James Shields, which assures Kansas City of draft pick compensation if its staff ace signs a major league contract with another team before June 8.

Shields has until Nov. 10 to accept, and it is expected he will not. In the past two years, none of the 22 free agents given qualifying offers have accepted.

Kansas City has expressed interest in re-signing Shields, who helped the Royals reach the playoffs for the first time in 29 years and win the AL pennant. But with higher-payroll clubs in the market for pitching, Shields is expected to sign elsewhere.

If that happens, the Royals would receive a compensatory draft pick between the first and second rounds of next year’s amateur draft.
