Chiefs Defense Preserves Win Over Seahawks

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) – The Kansas City Chiefs stopped the Seattle Seahawks on fourth down chiefs logothree times late in the fourth quarter Sunday, holding on for a tense 24-20 victory in a matchup of playoff contenders.

Jamaal Charles ran for 159 yards and two touchdowns, and Knile Davis also ran for a score, as the Chiefs (7-3) won their fifth straight game and moved into a tie for first in the AFC West.

Russell Wilson threw for 178 yards and two touchdowns, and Marshawn Lynch had 124 yards rushing for Seattle (6-4). But the Seahawks’ star running back, fresh off a four-touchdown game, was stuffed twice by the Kansas City defense with the outcome hanging in the balance.

After Shaky Start Kansas State Up Ends Southern Utah 98-68

Southern Utah tried to stick with Kansas State in Friday night’s season opener at Bramlage Coliseum, and managed to do so through the first ten minutes of the first half before the Wildcats pulled away in the second half for a 98-68 victory.

The ball screens by Southern Utah troubled the Wildcats in the first half according to Bruce Weber.

“They got us early. Their ball screen stuff is pretty good. They were getting Jevon (Thomas) and Nigel (Johnson) with some quick hitter ball screens and got us all kind of spread out. Obviously A.J. Hess is a pretty good player, made five three’s and put us in a little bit of a bind,” said Weber.

Kansas State was led in scoring by Nigel Johnson who came off the bench and went 4-6 from 3-point range and finished with 18 points. As a team the Wildcats shot 10-18 from beyond the arch, far better than any average from last season.

“We have more offensive weapons. The key will be figuring out roles, accepting the roles and then taking pride and executing their roles. Then as a staff I don’t know if the word is keeping them happy, but keeping them rotated where they’re all being productive and they’re feeling good about it.”

The Wildcats had six players finish in double figures scoring.

They will now have a quick turn around and play the University of Missouri-Kansas City on Monday night at Bramlage Coliseum. UMKC stunned Missouri Friday night 69-61 in their season opener in Columbia, Missouri.

Monday nights game is scheduled for a 7:00 p.m. tip off.

Season Ends for Blue Jay Football Team

Lawrence Free State rallied from a 10-7 deficit by recovering a kickoff and converting that possession into a field goal, and then intercepting a Blue Jay pass and returning it for a touchdown with 7:51 remaining in the second quarter to go in front of Junction City. The Firebirds would go on to lead at halftime 23-10, and defeat the Blue Jays in the Class 6A postseason playoffs 37-17 on a bitterly cold night at Al Simpler Stadium.

Junction City jumped on top early with a 27-yard field goal by Wayne Shirley, and led again late in the first quarter after Jovon Baldwin caught a pass from Ryan Hennington and rambled 76 yards for a touchdown.

Daniel Clarke hit three field goals in the ballgame for the Firebirds, who are now 8-3. They will advance into the Substate round of the 6A playoffs against Hutchinson next week.

The Blue Jays finished a solid season that included a district championship and an 8-3 final record.jcfb

Kansas State Woman Run Away with Season Opener 81-55

The Kansas State Woman’s Basketball team ran away with their season opener Friday night at Bramlage Coliseum winning 81-55 over Southern Illinois University Edwardsville.

The win marked the first for coach Jeff Mittie, who took over the program following 15 seasons at TCU. Mittie said that the win feels good.

“I think every year the first one, there’s always a lot of anxiety of just getting to that, but even when you take over a new program certainly,” said Mittie.

Kansas State had five players score in double figures, with three of those players coming in off of the bench. The bench added 41 points for the Wildcats. Coach Mittie mentioned that was good to see.

“You know we really could sub tonight, particularly on the front line and not have any drop off. That’s critical because we did have some foul trouble. We had some people who picked up two and three fouls early, and that was good to be able to go to the bench and have some quality production.”

The Wildcats will have two more home games next week against UMKC on Tuesday and Hampton next Friday, before finishing out the month in Puerto Vallerta, Mexico for the Hardwood for Hope tournament.

Food Prep Criticized at Kansas City Stadiums

Screen Shot 2014-11-14 at 12.27.58 PMKANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) – A food safety manager says dirty conditions and poor food handling
endangered customers at Kauffman and Arrowhead stadiums in Kansas City. A city health inspection prompted by the allegations found dozens of critical health code violations at the stadiums.

ESPN first reported the allegations from Jon Costa, the food safety manager for Aramark, which runs concessions at the two stadiums and at sports venues across the country.

Costa said he found such things as cockroaches and mouse feces in food-service areas and foods kept at unsafe temperatures. The city health inspection on Nov. 3 found mold in ice machines and dirty equipment.

Aramark spokesman Tod MacKenzie said the claims come from a disgruntled employee, even though he was responsible for managing food safety at the stadiums.
