Rios, Royals Agree to Deal

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) – A person with knowledge of the negotiations says outfielder Alex Rios kcr fiveand the Kansas City Royals have agreed to an $11 million, one-year contract.

The person spoke on condition of anonymity Monday because the deal was subject to Rios passing a physical.

Rios will take over in right field from Nori Aoki, who became a free agent after helping the Royals win their first AL pennant since 1985.

Rios, who turns 34 in February, had been with Texas since August 2013 and hit .280 this year with four homers and 54 RBIs. He set career highs with the Chicago White Sox in 2012 with 25 homers and 91 RBIs.

His agreement was first reported by CBS.

Lockett Named to Senior Bowl Roster

Kansas state wide receiver Tyler Lockett ws one of 12 players added to the Reese’s Senior Bowl tyler lockett fourroster Monday.

The collegiate all-star game is scheduled January 24 at Ladd-Peebles Stadium in Mobile, Alabama. Practices begin on Tuesday, January 20.

Lockett, the 41st player in K-State history to play in the game and first since 2012, currently holds K-State career records for receptions, receiving yards, receiving touchdowns, and 100-yard receiving games. He is a four-time All-Big 12 performer who was also named the 2013 and 2014 Big 12 Special Teams Player of the Year.

 

Royals Make Moves

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) – The Royals signed former Twins right-hander Yohan Pino on Monday kcr twoand designated reliever Casey Coleman for assignment.

The 30-year-old Pino went 2-5 with a 5.07 ERA in 11 starts for Minnesota last season. He made his debut June 19 against the White Sox and earned his first win against Seattle on July 10.

Pino, who also has pitched for the Indians, Blue Jays and Reds organizations, spent most of last season at Triple-A Rochester. He went 10-2 with a 2.47 ERA for the Red Wings.

Coleman went 1-0 with a 5.25 ERA in 10 appearances for the Royals last season. He was 5-1 with a 2.15 ERA for their Triple-A affiliate in Omaha.

Williams Named Phillips 66 Big 12 Player of the Week

MANHATTAN, Kan. – Senior Nino Williams earned Phillips 66 Big 12 Player of the Week honors for the first time in his career on Monday after averaging a near unnamed (4)double-double in a pair of Kansas State wins last week.

Williams becomes the first Wildcat to earn the Big 12’s Player of the Week accolade since Angel Rodriguez won the team’s fifth weekly honor of the 2012-13 season on Feb. 18, 2013. It marks the school’s 22nd league Player of the Week honor since the inception of the Big 12 in 1997.

Williams averaged 17.0 points on 56.3 percent shooting (9-of-16) to go with 9.5 rebounds in 32.5 minutes per game in helping the Wildcats to home wins over Bradley (50-47) and Savannah State (73-53). He also shot a stellar 88.9 percent (16-of-18) from the free throw line, including an 8-of-8 effort against Savannah State. He has now scored in double figures in six of his eight games played this season, including four consecutive games.

Williams opened the week with his second career double-double and first of the season against Bradley, as he led the team in both scoring (14) and rebounding (12) in 33 minutes of action. He connected 8-of-10 free throws, including four in a row in the last 6:40 of the contest. He followed with his second career 20-point effort in the win over Savannah State, as he went 6-of-8 from the field and 8-of-8 from the free throw line, for a career-tying 20 points to go with a team-high seven rebounds in 32 minutes. It marked just his second 20-point game and the first since also scoring 20 in a double-overtime loss at Baylor on Feb. 15, 2014.

In registering four consecutive double-digit scoring games for the first time in his career, Williams is currently averaging 12.8 points on 52.2 percent shooting with a team-high 5.1 rebounds in 27.9 minutes per game with seven starts in eight games played. He ranks second on the team in scoring, double-digit scoring games (6), field goals (36), free throws (29), free throws attempted (38), free throw percentage (76.3) and minutes played. He missed the exhibition and the first two regular season games due to a knee injury. He has led the team in scoring a team-best three times and grabbed the rebound lead in three contests.

In the last four games, Williams is averaging 15.8 points on 60 percent shooting (21-of-35) and 7.8 rebounds in 29.3 minutes per game while helping K-State to three wins during that span.

K-State (6-4) will take the week off for semester exams before returning to action on Saturday, Dec. 20 against former Big 12 foe Texas A&M (7-2) at the Sprint Center in Kansas City, Missouri for the Wildcat Classic. The game will tip off at 6 p.m. and will air nationally on ESPNU.

Blue Jay Wrestlers Fourth at Clay Center Tournament

The Junction City Blue Jay wrestling team finished fourth out of 12 teams in the Clay Center blue jay logoTournament.

Junction City was led by Max Bazan with a second place finish at 106 pounds, and Jeryl Denton, who finished second at 160 pounds.

Also for the Blue Jays, Gabe Padilla captured third at 126, Downey Wood third at 138, and Aryus Jones third at 170 pounds.

Blue Jay coach Bob Laster reported that Garden City finished first in the team competition. The Blue Jays compete in a 16-team tournament at Emporia this Saturday.

Williams 20 Paces Kansas State Past Savannah State

basketballMANHATTAN, Kan. (AP) – Nino Williams had 20 points and Marcus Foster had 13 points as K-State knocked off Savannah State 73-53 on Sunday night.

áThe Wildcats move to 4-0 all-time against the Tigers with all games between the two schools coming in the last 10 years.

áIt was also the sixth time that Williams has scored in double figures this season.

áTerel Hall had 17 points to pace the Tigers, who are in the middle of one month of games away from their home floor.

áAfter having their lead cut to 47-41 with 10:20 left, the Wildcats responded with a 21-5 run over the next eight minutes and sealed the victory with its depth.

Gipson, who was held scoreless in the first half due to early foul trouble, scored seven of his 10 points during the Kansas State scoring spurt.

K-State Women’s Basketball Defeats Oral Roberts

wildcat twoK-State trailed by 13 points early in the second half, but the Wildcats outscored Oral Roberts 35-16 in the final 16:01 to win their women’s basketball matchup 53-47 Sunday afternoon at Bramlage Coliseum.

The Wildcats wee led by forward Breanna Lewis who scored a career-high 22 points on 10-of-18 free throw shooting, while also getting three rebounds, and blocking five shots. Shaelyn Martin tied her career-high with nine rebounds.

Kansas State is 7-1 on the season, while Oral Roberts fell to 5-6.

The Wildcats host Grambling State on Saturday at 1 p.m. That game will feature the Fort Riley “Operation Santa” toy drive. Fans can purchase a general admission ticket for $3 when they donate a new toy.

Chiefs Roll Past Raiders

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) – Alex Smith threw for 297 yards and two scores, Kansas City shut down chiefs logoDerek Carr and the Oakland offense and the Chiefs beat the Raiders 31-13 on Sunday to end a three-game skid.

Knile Davis had touchdowns running and receiving, and De’Anthony Thomas returned a punt 81 yards for another score as the Chiefs (8-6) got even for a 24-20 loss to Oakland (2-12) last month.

The Chiefs led 10-6 early in the third quarter before scoring three touchdowns in 4 minutes, 42 seconds. The last was a 70-yard throw from Smith to Davis, who had taken over the majority of running back duties after Jamaal Charles took a shot to the head.

Charles appeared to pass concussion testing and returned briefly to the game.

Carr finished 27 of 56 for 222 yards, throwing a TD pass in the final minute. The Raiders’ rookie also was sacked four times and fumbled a snap that led to a Kansas City touchdown.

Lady Jays Fall to Great Bend

Great Bend outscored Junction City 18-5 in the closing minutes to defeat the Lady Jays in blue jay logobasketball at the Shenk Gym 66-54.

The game was tied at 49-40, but strong offensive rebounding and good free throw shooting down the stretch lifted the Panthers to the win. Great Bend was 11-13 at the free throw line in the fourth quarter.

Junction City was led in scoring by Akia Fain with 21 points, while Kealee Rains had 16 points before fouling out in the fourth quarter.

The Lady Jays fell to 0-3, while Great Bend is 3-1 on the season.
