Denton Captures First at Basehor-Linwood

Junction City Blue Jay senior Jeryl Denton captured first place in the 152 pound weight class at the blue jay logo34-team Basehor-Linwood Invitational.

Denton went 5-0 in the tournament, which was spread over Friday and Saturday.

Junction City finished sixth in the team competition, while Goddard finished first.

Other strong weight class finishes for the Blue Jays included Downey Wood third at 138 pounds, Jake Bazan fourth at 145, Max Bazan fifth 106, Aryus Jones fifth 160, and Jaquan Robinson sixth at 170 pounds.

The team started their return trip home from the tournament Saturday on one of the school district’s Blue Jay buses, but coach Bob Laster confirmed it broke down on I-70 about 10 miles out of Kansas City. Parents of the wrestlers were contacted and were able to give the players and coaches rides back to Junction City.

It’s not the first time there have been problems with Blue Jay  activity buses breaking down for Junction City High school sports teams, but the Board of Education recently moved to address that problem by agreeing to lease two brand new buses through an arrangement with B & B Busing. Those are expected to become available by the 2015-2016 school year.  The new buses will replace the two Blue Jay buses that have been experiencing mechanical difficulty.

Seahawks Headed to the Super Bowl

footballSEATTLE (AP) – Russell Wilson hit Jermaine Kearse for a 35-yard touchdown 3:19 into overtime to
lift the Seattle Seahawks to an improbable 28-22 victory over Green Bay in the NFC championship game.

The Seahawks became the first defending champion to make the Super Bowl in 10 years, and will play the winner of the AFC title game between Indianapolis and New England.

Outplayed much of Sunday and plagued by five turnovers, the Seahawks (14-4) trailed 19-7 with 2:09 remaining. That’s when Wilson ran 1 yard for a TD.

Seattle recovered a bobbled onside kick at the 50, and Marshawn Lynch sped and powered his way to a 24-yard TD run. Wilson’s desperate 2-point conversion pass was hauled in by Luke Willson to make it 22-19.

But Aaron Rodgers led the Packers (13-5) to Mason Crosby’s fifth field goal, from 48 yards with 14 seconds to go.

Then Wilson and Kearse struck.
