A Former Chief Will Go into Pro Football Hall of Fame

PHOENIX (AP) — Junior Seau, Jerome Bettis, Tim Brown, Charles Haley and Will Shields, of the Kansas City Chiefs, have been elected to the Pro Football Hall of Fame.NFL_logo

The class of 2015 also includes a pair of contributors, Bill Polian and Ron Wolf, along with senior selection Mick Tingelhoff.

The announcement was made Saturday night.

Shields was a picture of consistency.  A  12 time Pro Bowler with the Chiefs from 1993 to 2006. The Kansas City offensive lines that paved the way for Priest Holmes and Larry Johnson in the early 2000s were dominant with Shields leading the way as a highly athletic pulling guard.

Five nominees were eliminated in the final vote: Tony Dungy, Kevin Greene, Marvin Harrison, Orlando Pace and Kurt Warner.

Earlier Saturday, the selection committee reduced the list of 15 modern-day finalists by cutting Morten Andersen, Terrell Davis, John Lynch and coaches Don Coryell and Jimmy Johnson.

The induction ceremony is in August at Canton, Ohio.

Derby outdistanced the field in the team competition with 207.5 points. Wichita Kapaun Mt. Carmel finished second with 131.5 points, followed by Junction City with 131.

Blue Jay coach Bob Laster was pleased about his individual weight class champions, and the fact the Blue Jays received a team trophy. “But I really felt like that we had an opportunity to finish in the top two.”

First place finishers for Junction City included Jake Bazan at 145 pounds, Jeryl Denton at 152, and Aryus Jones at 160 pounds.  Gabe Padilla finished second at 126 pounds, Downey Wood third at 138, Malik White fourth at 285 pounds, and Jaquan Robinson fourth at 170 pounds for Junction City.

Laster saw a lot of good for his team in the invitational, but also noted there were a couple of matches the Blue Jays lost because they weren’t in shape. “And at this point in time in the season that should not be in play. So I’m going to take blame for that one. So that means during practice I’m going to have to pick it up and make sure that that is not one of the reasons.”

The Blue Jays host Shawnee Heights in a dual match Wednesday evening at 7 p.m. at the Shenk Gym.

Wichita State Baseball Program, Fined Placed on Probation

KANSAS CITY, Kan. (AP) — Wichita State’s baseball program was placed on probation Thursday after shockersthe NCAA found that the Shockers used 21 players who received impermissible benefits over a two-year period.

The school self-reported the violations last year, likely resulting in lighter sanctions. Still, the NCAA decided that Wichita State’s storied program would need to vacate all wins from 2011-13 — including its 2013 NCAA tournament appearance — and pay a $5,000 fine.

Shortly after he was hired in June 2013, Shockers coach Todd Butler discovered that players had purchased more than $7,000 in apparel at a substantial discount.

The incidents occurred under the watch of former coach Gene Stephenson, who was fired in June 2013 after 36 seasons. The wins will be stricken from his record.
