  • Since Snyder’s return to the sidelines in 2009, K-State is 18-4 in the month of September.

Royals Promote Joba Chamberlin from Triple A

kcr twoKANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) – The Kansas City Royals have purchased the contracts of right-handed relievers Joba Chamberlain and Louis Coleman from Triple-A Omaha on Monday.

Chamberlain, who is 25-21 with seven saves in 359 big league appearances with the New York Yankees and Detroit Tigers, was 1-0 with a 6.43 ERA with the Storm Chasers, but allowed one earned run and seven hits in seven innings over his final seven appearances.

Chamberlain is a former Nebraska teammate of Royals All-Star outfielder Alex Gordon.

Coleman, the Royals’ 2009 fifth-round pick out of LSU, went 8-2 with nine saves and a 1.68 ERA with Omaha. He is 5-4 with a 3.25 ERA and two saves in 148 relief appearances with Kansas City.

The Royals designated for assignment right-hander Yohan Pino and infielder Dusty Coleman to make roster space for Chamberlain and Coleman.

Royals Fall to White Sox

kcr sixKANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) – (AP) – Adam Eaton homered and scored three times as the Chicago White Sox beat the Kansas City Royals 7-5 on Sunday for their fourth straight win. Eaton collected three more hits and is batting .517 in his last seven games. Erik Johnson pitched six innings of three-run ball in his first major league appearance of the season.

K-State Shuts Out South Dakota 34-0 in Season Opener

Kansas State opened their season Saturday on the right foot when Morgan Burns returned the opening kickoff 100 yards in 12 seconds to take the early 7-0 lead following Matthew McCrane’s PAT.

The kick return was followed by the defense giving up one 23 yard pass by South Dakota before SNYDER 9-5holding them on the next four downs forcing a punt that pinned the Wildcats to their five yard line.

Jesse Ertz came in to lead the offense for the first time as the starting quarterback and started out pretty well picking up five yards on a quarterback rush, but things weren’t as good as they seemed. Ertz came up with a bit of a limp and then following the next play was helped off the field, and was later carted off the field and into the locker room.

“I feel dramatically bad for him,” said Coach Bill Snyder following the game. “We’ll see how it plays out, I have no idea right now. Anytime anybody gets hurt, you know they work so hard all of them do, and then to have it take you out of a game like it did, that you prepared so hard for to play. Our prayers will be with him, and hopefully it’s something that he can get back on his feet real quick.”

Last years backup Joe Hubener came in to replace Ertz and following a few growing pains, including a fumble on the South Dakota 1 yard line following a nine play 74 yard drive, Hubener seemed to find a rhythm leading the Wildcats on three scoring drives to finish out the second quarter and eventually the 34-0 shutout.

“I definitely didn’t expect to get that opportunity quite that quick,” said Hubener. “That’s unfortunate for Jesse, I don’t know exactly what happened, but I know he wasn’t able to come back tonight. That’s tough on him and I feel sorry for him and wish him a quick recovery whatever is going on.”

On his own performance Hubener said that he thought he did alright,”there’s definitely some things that I’m not happy about, I wish I didn’t fumble that ball in the end zone, but I think for the most part I handled business and we got the win and that’s what matters.”

Kansas State was led by two freshman both rushing and passing. Justin Silmon rushed for 51 yards on six carries and Dominique Heath caught three passes for 54 yards.

Defensively, Kansas State also lost preseason All-Big 12 Safety Dante Barnett early in the first half due to an apparent shoulder injury. The severity of both Barnett’s and Ertz’s injuries are unknown at this time.

The Wildcats will next travel to San Antonio, Texas to take on the University of Texas, San Antonio next Saturday.

Kansas State Football’s Ring of Honor Gains Four New Members

Kansas State Football inducted four new members into the Ring of Honor during halftime of the season opener Saturday against South Dakota.

This years inductees included former Wildcat greats Michael Bishop, Jordy Nelson, Darren RING-OF-HONOR (1)Sproles and Clarence Scott.

Bishop was one of the best quarterbacks to put on a Wildcat jersey and played a major role in propelling Kansas State to their first ever No. 1 national ranking in 1998. He was the ’98 Heisman Trophy runner-up and still holds the K-State season passing efficiency record after a 159.6 rating in 1998 (164-of-295 for 2,844 yards and 23 TDs/4 INTs) in addition to the season total offense mark at 3,592 yards.

To see his name permanently affixed to the facing of the east side of Bill Snyder Family Stadium speaks volumes.

“To look over there and see my name, I mean it speaks volumes because during the years coming back you see the other guys names up there and you think ‘You know I wonder when my name is going to get up there.’ So you anticipate and you anticipate and then I finally got the call and they told me it’s going up there, after I got off the phone with Sean Snyder, I set the phone down and I shed a tear,” said Bishop.

Bishop went on to say that it shows that all of his hard work has finally paid off,”and that’s something that can never be taken away from me. As long as the stadium is here, mine name is up there and it’s just a great feeling.”

A former walk-on who started his Wildcat days as a defensive back, Nelson made his mark on the Wildcat program during his final season as he was named a 2007 Consensus All-American and finalist for the Biletnikoff Award. In 2007, Nelson set school records for receptions in a game (15) and season (122), receiving yards in a game (214) and season (1,606) and yards per game in a season (133.8). He was taken 36th overall by Green Bay in the 2008 NFL Draft.

A defensive back from 1968-70, Scott played in the first game at now-Bill Snyder Family Stadium. As a senior in 1970, he earned First Team All-America honors from Sporting News and Look Magazine in addition to being a First Team All-Big Eight honoree. Drafted 14th overall in the 1971 NFL Draft by Cleveland, Scott played 13 seasons in the NFL and helped the Browns earn four playoff appearances, while he was a 1973 Pro Bowler. He also is a member of the K-State Athletics Hall of Fame.

Sproles was one of the most dangerous all-purpose players in college football during his time at K-State (2001-2004) and as a junior helped lead the Wildcats to the 2003 Big 12 Championship and a berth in the Tostitos Fiesta Bowl. He finished fifth in the Heisman Trophy race that season, but his career rushing and all-purpose numbers still rank atop the school records. K-State’s all-time leading rusher with 4,979 yards, Sproles currently has three of the school’s top four season rushing marks and totaled 24 100-yard rushing games including a string of 10 straight during the 2002 and 2003 seasons. His 2,735 all-purpose yards in 2003 are the 10th-most in NCAA history, while his career total of 6,812 is also tops in schools history. He was drafted by San Diego in the fourth round of the 2005 NFL Draft.

These four join a class of ten other Wildcat greats Lynn Dickey, Steve Grogan, Jaime Mendez, Sean Snyder, Gary Spani, Veryl Switzer, David Allen, Martin Gramatica, Terence Newman and Mark Simoneau.
