Royals Fall to White Sox

kcrCHICAGO (AP) – Eric Hosmer and Kendrys Morales homered and Johnny Cueto threw six quality innings, but the Kansas City Royals lost to the Chicago White Sox 4-2 on Tuesday night.

The Royals, who have lost four of their last five, fell behind 3-0 after Adam Eaton drove a two-run homer into the bullpen in right field off Cueto (10-13) in the fifth inning.

Cueto lost for the third time in his four September outings and gave up three runs and eight hits over six innings. He struck out two and walked two.

Kansas City got within 3-2 in the sixth when Hosmer and Morales hit back-to-back homers off Chicago starter Jeff Samardzija (11-13), who won for the second straight time after losing nine of his 10 previous outings.

The runs were the first the Royals scored in 17 innings during a three-game stretch that included Kansas City being shut out 1-0 in 11 innings by the Chicago Cubs on Monday night.

Kansas State Opens Tough Big 12 Play Saturday

Out of the next five games for Kansas State they will be going up four top 20 ranked teams, but will have three of those at home.

Kansas State opens Big 12 play at Stillwater, Oklahoma, Saturday SNYDER 9-15against 20th ranked Oklahoma State. The Cowboys are coming off a come from behind win over Texas this past Saturday.

Breaking down Oklahoma State offensively, they played two quarterbacks in last weeks game, which will create more of a challenge for the Wildcat defense.

“You anticipate that #4 (J.W. Walsh) is going to come into the ball game and they are going to run the quarterback run game with him because he can run the ball,” said Snyder. “But you might go back and he completed about 67 percent of his passes against us in 2013 when we played them so he threw the ball around pretty well in that ball game. I wouldn’t preclude him being on the field, and my guesstimate about him, or about anybody else, is he could play one or he could play 80 snaps.”

Oklahoma State’s Mason Rudolph has been the starting quarterback through the first four games and ranks in the top 10 nationally in passing yards and yards per attempt; 13th nationally in yards per completion and 19th in pass efficiency with a 67.7 completion percentage and six touchdowns.

K-State’s Sophomore Linebacker Elijah Lee explained the two quarterback system will keep them on their toes.

“It keeps you on your toes because you do not know who is going to be in or what they are capable of. Both of them can run and pass. We just have to be alert,” said Lee.

Kansas State is coming out of a bye week, which could be substantial for the Wildcats as it gave them time to heal as well as focus on mistakes identified during non-conference play. Fixing those mistakes was a goal for the defense according to Senior Defensive Tackle Travis Britz.

“We had a set of goals that we went over, and as a defense we tried to eliminate those mistakes that we have been making. As a whole, we are steadily progressing toward those goals. We still have some improvement to do, but as a whole we have conquered some of those things that we had issues with earlier in the season,” said Britz.

Saturday’s game is scheduled for a 3 pm kick off from Boone Pickens Stadium. The Wildcats will be looking for their first win in Stillwater since a 44-21 triumph in 1999.

Larry Brown Suspended by NCAA, SMU Gets Postseason Ban

little basketballsDALLAS (AP) – The NCAA has banned the SMU men’s basketball team from postseason play and suspended coach Larry Brown for nine games during the upcoming season after finding multiple violations in the Mustangs program.

The NCAA says the problems include academic fraud and unethical conduct. It singled out Brown for making bad choices that included “not reporting possible violations in his program, initially lying to the enforcement staff during the investigation and providing no specific guidance to his staff on rules compliance.”

The penalties were revealed Tuesday, more than eight months after the school acknowledged an NCAA investigation. The basketball team will also lose nine scholarships over the next three seasons.

SMU was the American Athletic Conference champion last season. The Mustangs went to the NCAA tournament for the first time since 1993.

This is Brown’s third coaching job at the college level, and each program has faced NCAA sanctions.

Big 12 Play Has Arrived

football clip artBig 12 Conference play has arrived.

Six of the league’s 10 teams are still undefeated, though that number will quickly be trimmed by at least two.

On the first Saturday with a full slate of five conference games, there are two matchups of undefeated teams. No. 23 West Virginia plays at No. 15 Oklahoma this weekend, while Kansas State goes to No. 20 Oklahoma State, which opened conference play with a win at Texas on Saturday.

Oklahoma coach Bob Stoops said Monday that things have worked out so far for the Sooners, including a win at Tennessee.

The other undefeated teams are defending co-champions TCU and Baylor.

Kansas State Uses Bye Week to Heal and Prepare for Start of Big 12 Play

Kansas State is preparing for their Saturday match up with 20th ranked Oklahoma State Saturday in Stillwater, OK.

The Wildcats are coming off a bye week were they were able to make some headway in a number of areas according to Bill Snyder, Kansas State Head Coach.

“We wanted to be able to get a little bit of rest and I think that we wildcataccomplished that, wanted to get a little healthier and I think that maybe some of the bumps and bruises have healed a little bit better,” said Snyder. “We put a great deal of attention on some of the issues that we’ve had, some things that we need to improve on, I think not collectively but a substantial amount of improvement I think has been made in a number of those areas, but there’s still a way to go.”

The bye week came at an opportune time as Kansas State opens Big 12 Play against a Oklahoma State team that is 4-0 on the season and is averaging about 110 more yards offense per game than the Wildcats, with most of those coming through the passing game, suggesting that the Wildcat defense will be tested once again Saturday.

Oklahoma State’s defense not to be taken lightly as well. Coach Snyder went over a few things that he saw out of the Cowboys defense in their game this past weekend over Texas.

“I think the ability of Oklahoma State to contain the Texas quarterback, for the most part after the first quarter, I thought was substantial in the ball game. It gives you a good idea that schematically they are very sound and able to adjust to what kind of offense that they are playing.”

Kansas State and Oklahoma State face off in Stillwater, Oklahoma, Saturday in a 3 pm kick off.
