Kansas – Oklahoma Remain One-Two in AP Poll

little basketballsKansas and Oklahoma, who played one of the season’s best games last week, remain 1-2 in the men’s Top 25 basketball poll by The Associated Press.

The Jayhawks (14-1) beat the Sooners 109-106 in triple overtime. They received all but two first-place votes Monday from the 65-member national media panel. It is the second week at No. 1 for Kansas.

Oklahoma (13-1) drew one No. 1 vote. It was followed by Maryland and Michigan State (16-1), which had the other first-place vote. North Carolina is fifth followed by Villanova, Xavier, Miami, Duke and SMU.

SMU is in the top 10 for the first time since February 1985. The Mustangs (15-0) and No. 19 South Carolina (15-0) are the only unbeaten Division I teams. SMU is ineligible for the postseason because of NCAA rules violations.

No. 21 Baylor and No. 25 Gonzaga are the week’s newcomers, replacing Connecticut and Dayton.

Brown Named Big 12 Newcomer of the Week

brown

MANHATTAN, Kan. – Freshman Barry Brown was selected as the Phillips 66 Big 12 Newcomer of the Week on Monday after averaging 17.0 points off the bench in road games against Texas and No. 2/1 Oklahoma.

Brown becomes the second Wildcat freshman to win the Big 12 newcomer award after Dean Wade won the weekly accolade on Dec. 7, 2015 and the third overall player to earn an accolade from the league since junior Wesley Iwundu won Player of the Week honors to open the season on Nov. 16, 2015. Brown is the sixth different Wildcat player to be selected for the honor since 2007. Overall, it marks the school’s 30th Newcomer of the Week honor since the inception of the Big 12 in 1997, including the fourth under head coach Bruce Weber.

A 6-foot-3 guard from St. Petersburg, Fla., Brown has led the Wildcats in scoring in four of the last five games, including a combined 34 points in contests last week at Texas and No. 2/1 Oklahoma, all from the bench. He averaged 17.0 points on 48.1 percent shooting (13-of-27), which included four 3-pointers, with 4.5 rebounds, 2.0 assists and 2.0 steals in 27 minutes per game.

Brown scored a team-high 15 points against the Longhorns on 5-of-11 field goals with 3 assists and 2 steals in 24 minutes while knocking down 3-of-4 attempts from the free throw line on Jan. 5. He scored 12 of his team-high 19 points in the second half against the Sooners on 8-of-16 shooting with a season-high 8 rebounds and 2 steals in a season-best 30 minutes of action on Jan. 9.

Brown, who is averaging 14.6 points on 47.3 percent shooting in the last five games, ranks first on the team in 3-point field goal percentage (37.0), second in 3-point field goals (20) and steals (17) and fourth in scoring (9.1 ppg.) and double-figure scoring games (6). He is one of three Wildcat freshmen averaging better than 8.5 points per game, along with Wade (10.9 ppg.) and Kamau Stokes (8.7 ppg.).

K-State (10-5, 0-3 Big 12) begins a two-game homestand on Tuesday night, as the Wildcats host Texas Tech (11-3, 1-2 Big 12) at 7 p.m. CT on Military Appreciation Night at Bramlage Coliseum. Military personnel can purchase tickets for just $10 with their ID, while fans can take advantage of the Wildcat 4-Pack, which includes four general admission tickets for just $50. The contest will be televised on FOX Sports Kansas City (state of Kansas, Kansas City area), K-StateHD.TV and ESPN3 (outside the state of Kansas).

Chiefs Play at New England in Next Round of Playoffs

football littleKANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) – The Kansas City Chiefs turned their attention to the Patriots on Sunday, where they may be without star wide receiver Jeremy Maclin for their divisional round game.

Kansas City snapped an eight-game postseason losing streak with its 30-0 victory over the Texans on Saturday. But advancing to the Chiefs’ first AFC championship game 1993 could be tough if Maclin, by far their top pass catcher, is unable to play next Saturday in New England.

The Chiefs initially feared Maclin had hurt his right ACL. But an MRI revealed the ligament intact, and that he sustained an ankle sprain. The severity of it was unknown.

If Maclin is unable to go, rookie Chris Conley would take his place against the Patriots.

K-State Strong at Wildcat Invitational

ksu t-f

MANHATTAN, Kan.
– Kansas State combined for 17 first-place finishes and set two facility records as it put on a dominant performance in the Wildcat Invitational in Ahearn Field House on Saturday.

In the final scoring, the 20th-ranked men topped Wichita State, 85-82, and Arkansas-Pine Bluff, 99-40, while the 4th-ranked women defeated Nebraska-Omaha, 82-35, and Arkansas Pine Bluff, 88-53, but fell to the Shockers, 102-61.

“I think we saw people who did a pretty decent job when they were home and people who did not do a decent job when they were home,” head coach Cliff Rovelto said. “That is what we learned. That is what this meet is all about when we come back, to find out where we are at.”

Senior Akela Jones highlighted the day with first-place finishes in the 60 meter hurdles, 4×400 meter relay and high jump. Her mark of 8.17 in the 60 meter hurdles set a new Wildcat Invitational record and facility record.

Fellow senior A’Keyla Mitchell also set a new meet and facility record during the race, winning the 300 meter dash with a time of 37.72. The previous facility record of 39.29 was set earlier this season at the K-State Winter Invitational by teammate Tia’ Gamble.

On the track, distance runners Morgan Wedekind and Lukas Koch placed first in the mile run with time of 5:03.43 and 4:18.69, respectively. Senior Sonia Gaskin finished first in the 600 yard run with a mark of 1:22.05, while freshmanJavon Robinson posted time of 1:13.67 to finish first in the same event.

Junior Kain Ellis also added a first place effort for the distance runners, finishing the 1000 meter run with a time of 2:28.10.

Sophomore Keiteyana Parks took first place in the 200 meter dash with a time of 25.51, while Gamble finished first in the 400 meter dash with a mark of 56.20.Terrell Smith placed first in the 60 meter dash with a time of 6.77, while freshman Devie Freeman outpaced teammate Ifeanyichukwu Otuonye with a time of 22.39.

In the field, junior Miles Bearden placed first in the high jump with a leap of 2.10m/6-10.75. Fellow junior Zack Supple had a strong outing in pole vault, recording a first place finish with a jump of 4.90m/16-00.75.

Freshman thrower Brett Neelly recorded his second win in shot put in as many meets with a throw of 16.83m/55-02.75.

“We obviously had some really outstanding performances today,” Rovelto added. “I think that is a reflection of them doing a good job over the last two or three weeks training but also a reflection that they are just pretty good.”

K-State returns to action on January 15 as the Wildcats head to Lawrence, Kansas, to compete in the KSU-KU-WSU showdown.

Chiefs Win a Playoff Game

chiefs logoHOUSTON (AP) — After 22 years without a playoff victory, the Kansas City Chiefs were determined not to give up the lead this time.

The Chiefs had enough points to win after jumping ahead 7-0 in the first 11 seconds, and they used relentless pressure, five turnovers and a ball-control offense to dominate the Houston Texans 30-0 in the wild-card round of the NFL playoffs on Saturday.

They were especially cognizant of not letting up after blowing a 28-point lead in a loss to the Colts in their last playoff appearance in 2013.

“What happened to us a couple years ago, everybody remembers that even the coaches included, so our entire mentality is about finishing,” quarterback Alex Smith said. “The mentality doesn’t change.”

They finished off the Texans early, and they had the hometown fans booing by the second quarter. Texans quarterback Brian Hoyer had the worst game of his career with four interceptions and a fumble. Houston’s defense kept the Texans close in the first half, but J.J. Watt left with an injury in the third quarter, Jadeveon Clowney never even put on his jersey and the Chiefs were able to close the game out in the second half.

K-State Drops Another Big 12 Men’s Basketball Game

little basketballsNORMAN, Okla. (AP) — Buddy Hield scored 31 points to help No. 2 Oklahoma beat Kansas State 86-76 on Saturday.

Hield followed his 46-point effort in Monday’s triple-overtime loss to No. 1 Kansas by making 11 of 14 shots, including 6 of 8 3-pointers. It was his eighth straight game with at least 20 points and his sixth this season with at least 30.

Jordan Woodard scored 19 points and Khadeem Lattin added 10 points, 10 rebounds and six blocks for the Sooners (13-1, 2-1 Big 12).

Kansas State upset Oklahoma in Norman last year, but Oklahoma avoided a repeat by shooting 57 percent from the field.

Oklahoma Defeats Kansas State in Big 12 Women’s Basketball

wildcat twoNORMAN, Okla. (AP) – Vionise Pierre-Louis scored a career-high 16 points, pulled down seven rebounds and No. 17 Oklahoma held off Kansas State 68-58 on Sunday.

Pierre-Louis made all eight of her free throws, Kaylon Williams was 8 of 10 from the line and scored 14 points for the Sooners (12-3, 3-1 Big 12), who sank 28 of 34 compared to 13 of 22 for Kansas State. Derica Wyatt added 11 points and Gabbi Ortiz 10. Williams has scored in double figures in every game this season.

Breanna Lewis had 20 points and Megan Deines 10 for the Wildcats (10-5, 0-4).

Oklahoma led 22-8 after one quarter but the Wildcats were within six, 41-35, after three. A 3-pointer by Kaylee Page with 46 seconds left cut their deficit to four but that would be the Wildcats’ final points as Oklahoma hit six straight free throws.

Blue Jays and Lady Jays Fall to Shawnee Heights

small blue jayThe Shawnee Heights Thunderbirds ( 4-2 ) overcame a 6-point first half deficit enroute to a 65-55 win over the Junction City Blue Jay ( 2-5 ) boys basketball team.

Blue Jay coach Pat Battle noted the Thunderbirds hit some shots in the second quarter, the Blue Jays had a few missed block outs, seemed to be behind in the foul count in both halves, and Shawnee Heights shot free throws better than Junction City.

Battle noted to win his team would have needed to make some shots that they normally hit. ” But he also added, “It’s probably the best night we’ve had executing to tell you the truth.”

T. J. Poole led the Blue Jays with 21 points.

The Junction City Lady Jays ( 0-7 )  ran into an undefeated Shawnee Heights squad Friday night in the Thunderbirds gym.

The Lady Jays fell 64-36.

Shawnee Heights ( 6-0 )jumped out to a 17-7 first quarter lead and never trailed.

The Thunderbirds got 18 points from their post player, Jazz Sweet. Junction City was led by Ally McKenzie with 10.
