More on Gordon Signing

kcr fourKANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) – All-Star outfielder Alex Gordon has signed a $72 million, four-year deal to remain with the World Series champion Kansas City Royals, the team that drafted him more than a decade ago.

The deal, first reported by MLB.com, includes a mutual option for the 2020 season. Its value makes it the largest in franchise history, trumping $55 million deals given to Mike Sweeney and Gil Meche, a person familiar with the contract told The Associated Press. The person spoke on condition of anonymity because financial terms were not released.

The 31-year-old Gordon declined an option for $13.75 million to test free agency. Injuries limited him to 104 games last season.

Chiefs’ Justin Houston Plans to Play vs. Texas on Saturday

chiefs logoKANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) – Chiefs linebacker Justin Houston confirmed Wednesday that he plans to play in Saturday’s wild-card game in Houston, his first game since hyperextending his knee in November.

The All-Pro pass rusher did light work last Friday but was not active for Sunday’s regular-season finale against Cleveland. He’s been practicing this week with a brace on his knee.

Houston acknowledged that “I definitely got some rust to knock off.” But his return should be a boon for the Chiefs, who have had to make do without their best pass rusher for the past five games.

Fellow pass rusher Tamba Hali is also expected to play. He returned last week from a broken thumb but only played 14 snaps against the Browns.

K-State Women 4th, Men 20th in USTFCCCA Preseason

KSU TRACK

MANHATTAN, Kan. – Kansas State’s women’s track team earned a 4th-place ranking with 120.25 points, while the men earned a 20th-place ranking with 43.19 points, in the USTFCCCA’s preseason indoor track and field poll, the organization announced on Wednesday.

The 4th-place rank marks the highest ranking ever by the Wildcat women, topping their previous high 6th-place ranking attained over a three week period last season.

The women were also one of the biggest gainers in the preseason poll, moving up 14 spots from last season’s 18th-place finish. The men also made a big move into the poll after finishing last season unranked.

K-State’s women are joined by fellow Big 12 members Texas and Baylor, who are ranked 3rdand 11th, respectively. On the men’s side, K-State is preceded by Texas (2nd), TCU (7th), Oklahoma State (16th) and Texas Tech (17th)

The team returns to action on Saturday as it hosts the Wildcat Invitational at Ahearn Field House. Field events are set to begin at 11 a.m. followed by track events, which are slated to begin at 2 p.m.

Alex Gordon Agrees to Four-Year Deal with Royals

kcr smallKANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) – A person familiar with the deal says All-Star outfielder Alex Gordon has agreed to a four-year contract to remain with the World Series champion Kansas City Royals.

The person spoke to The Associated Press on condition of anonymity Wednesday because the team had not announced the deal. MLB.com was first to report the deal, expected to be worth $72 million.

Gordon was the second overall pick of the Royals in 2005, and went through years of growing pains before finally becoming a star. He’s become not only one of the best defensive outfielders in the game with four Gold Gloves to his resume, but also a consistent hitter and clubhouse leader.

He was a big reason why the Royals won their first World Series since 1985 last season.

Lady Jays Rally but Fall to Topeka High

small blue jayThe Junction City Lady Jays ( 0-6 ) trailed by as much as 13 points in the first quarter, but rallied to lead by four in the third quarter.

The Topeka High Trojans ( 3-2 ) were too powerful in the fourth quarter, however. Led by 12 points from post player Erica Birch, Topeka High went on to defeat the Lady Jays in basketball at the Shenk Gym 59-54.

Junction City coach Derek Petty noted in the fourth quarter his team might have gotten a little tired or lost focus. “It’s a position they’re not used to being in and didn’t think some things through, and made a few mistakes here and there.”

Junction City plays at Shawnee Heights Friday night.

Blue Jays Can’t Hold Early Lead

small blue jayThe Topeka High Trojans  ( 3-3 ) rallied from a 12-point first half deficit and went on to defeat the Junction City Blue Jays ( 2-4 ) 76-57 in boys basketball at the Shenk Gym.

Junction City led 29-27 at halftime, but the Trojans outscored the Blue Jays 49-27 in the second half. Blue Jay coach Pat Battle says the problems started for Junction City long before the third quarter. “It started with bad turnovers, not taking care of the ball in the second. We had a pretty decent lead that we blew.”

Battle credited Topeka High for hitting some shots, noting the Trojans shot the ball well in the game. “We’ve got to do a better job of handling ball screens.”

Junction City plays at Shawnee Heights Friday night.

Texas Edges Kansas State

wildcat twoAUSTIN, Texas (AP) – Isaiah Taylor scored 17 points and Texas overcame a tough shooting night with some key late-game 3-pointers to beat Kansas State 60-57 Tuesday night.

Javan Felix scored 14 for Texas (9-5, 1-1 Big 12) and his 3-pointer with just under 4 minutes left gave Texas its first lead of the second half. Barry Brown scored 15 for Kansas State (10-4, 0-2), but two 3-point attempts in the final seconds were partially blocked.

The win let Texas and new coach Shaka Smart avoid the program’s third 0-2 start in the Big 12 in four years.

The Longhorns still struggled to find offensive rhythm after losing senior center Cam Ridley to a foot injury for 8-to-10 weeks three games ago. But despite a 6 of 23 shooting effort on 3-pointers, the Longhorns got key long-range baskets from Felix and Connor Lammert down the stretch to secure the win.
