Chiefs’ Pederson Focused on Patriots, Not Philadelphia Job

chiefs logoKANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) – Chiefs offensive coordinator Doug Pederson says his interview for the vacant head coaching job in Philadelphia went “great,” but he insists he is focused on the New England Patriots.

The Chiefs visit the reigning Super Bowl champions for a playoff game Saturday.

Pederson interviewed for the Philadelphia job Sunday. He started nine games at quarterback for the Eagles in 1999, and began his NFL coaching career under Andy Reid in 2009 as a quality control coach.

Pederson followed Reid to Kansas City in 2013 as his offensive coordinator.

The Eagles have also interviewed Tom Coughlin, Duce Staley, Pat Shurmur and Ben McAdoo. Bears offensive coordinator Adam Gase also interviewed before taking the job in Miami.

NFL Approves Rams to LA, Chargers Option to Join

football littleHOUSTON (AP) – NFL owners voted Tuesday night to allow the St. Louis Rams to move to a new stadium just outside Los Angeles, and the San Diego Chargers will have an option to share the facility.

The Oakland Raiders, who also wanted to move to the area, were left out of the deal, but could move to Los Angeles if San Diego doesn’t, Commissioner Roger Goodell said.

The moves end the NFL’s 21-year absence from the nation’s second-largest media market.

The compromise- the Chargers and Raiders wanted to share a new stadium in Carson, California, and the Rams wanted to move to nearby Inglewood – was approved 30-2 after the other options did not get the 24 votes needed for approval.

The Chargers can continue to negotiate with San Diego for a new stadium deal, while keeping the option of joining at the Rams and owner Stan Kroenke at the $1.8 billion complex he is building.

The Rams -based in the LA area from 1946-94 – will play in a temporary facility – probably the Los Angeles Coliseum – until the new stadium is ready, most likely for the 2019 season.

Big Second Quarter Propels Blue Jays

small blue jayThe Junction City Blue Jays ( 3-5, 1-3 Centennial League ) used an 18-4 run in the second quarter to speed them on their way to a 67-49 victory over Highland Park in Topeka Tuesday night.

In the first half Junction City got four 3-point baskets from T.J. Poole and another one from Ricardo Erans as the Blue Jays jumped out to a 41-19 halftime lead. Highland Park ( 5-3, 3-1 Centennial League ) made a run in the second half that cut the lead to 14, but that was as close as the Scots would get.

Poole led Junction City in scoring with 21 points, while post player Alonga Range had a huge game, finishing with 17 points. During a low scoring third quarter Range scored six of Junction City’s 10 points.

In  the girls contest Junction City ( 0-8 ) led by 10 points at halftime but couldn’t hold the lead, and wound up losing to Highland Park ( 3-5 ) 48-46.

The Lady Scots scored 21 points in the third quarter compared to 10 for Junction City. In the closing minutes Junction City had opportunities to score more points on stick back shots off offensive rebounds, but came up just one bucket short.

Alana Kramer had 11 points and Ally McKenzie 10 points for Junction City.

The Lady Jays and Blue Jays host Washburn Rural Friday night.

Kansas Falls to West Virginia

jayhawkMORGANTOWN, W.Va. (AP) – Jaysean Paige scored 26 points, Devin Williams had 17 points and 12 rebounds, and No. 11 West Virginia beat top-ranked Kansas 74-63 on Tuesday night.

West Virginia (15-1, 4-0 Big 12) is off to its best start since 1982, when it started 24-1.

Perry Ellis scored 21 points for Kansas (14-2, 3-1), which committed a season-high 22 turnovers, shot 42 percent from the field and was held to its lowest point total of the season.

West Virginia led 39-27 at halftime and never let the Jayhawks get closer than six points in the second half.

West Virginia fans stormed the court and sang John Denver’s “Country Roads” after the Mountaineers’ first win over a top-ranked team in 33 years.

Kansas State Surges Past Texas Tech for First Conference Win 83-70

Kansas State opened up their two game home stand with an 83-70 win over Texas Tech Tuesday night, giving them their first win in Big 12 play this season.

The offensive struggles that has plagued the Wildcats for most of the season seemed to be non-existent for the most KSU TTU 1-12part in the victory. Kansas State had five players in double figures with Wesley Iwundu and Kamau Stokes leading the Wildcats with 17 points a piece. The Big 12 Newcomer of the Week, Barry Brown finished with 15 points followed by Justin Edwards with 11 and Dean Wade with 10.

After opening Big 12 play on a 0-3 losing streak Head Coach Bruce Weber said he knew it wasn’t time to panic.

“After the Oklahoma game, that’s one thing I told the coaches, we can’t panic. We’ve lost to West Virginia, who is now a top 10 team, you lost to Oklahoma who was 1/2 in the country, and Texas on the road who was just beating Iowa State,” said Weber. “We had to critique some things, we had to change some things, execute a little better. But we had to keep their spirits up, keep their energy up, I think that was the most important thing.”

Kansas State improved to 11-5 on the season and 1-3 in Big 12 play. They will now host No. 17 Iowa State Saturday at Bramlage Coliseum. The Cyclones are coming off a 94-91 OT loss to Texas Tuesday.

  • K-State will be looking to snap a 3-game losing streak, which is the longest since dropping 5 straight from Jan. 27-Feb. 11, 2015. The Wildcats are 0-3 in Big 12 play for the first time since losing their first 4 league games in 2008-09. The 3 losses have come by a combined 17 points.
  • K-State’s 5 losses have come by 10 points or less this season, including 2 by 4 points or fewer. Four of the 5 losses have also come to ranked foes, including No. 9/8 North Carolina (70-80), No. 25 Texas A&M (68-78), No. 19/17 West Virginia (83-87, 2OT) and No. 2/1 Oklahoma (76-86), while all 5 have come to teams with RPI of 35 or better this season.
  • According to Paul Bessire of @predictmachine, K-State has the 4th-toughest remaining schedule in the country, which includes 11 games vs. teams with RPIs of 40 or better. Eight of the top 9 toughest schedules belong to Big 12 teams, including 3rd-place Texas Tech.

It’s Official – Bill Snyder Set to Lead K-State in 2016

Release from K-State Athletics

MANHATTAN, Kan. – Kansas State head football coach Bill Snyder, who on December 8 became just the fourth active head coach to be inducted into the College Football Hall of Fame, confirmed today that he will be on theSNYDER 9-15 sidelines as head coach of the Wildcats in 2016.

“Following our bowl game against Arkansas, I had a chance to visit with my family, and they collectively wanted me to do what I wanted to do and none were against my decision to return as long as I am having a positive impact on the young people in our program, my health is in order and as long as I am wanted by the University and the wonderful Kansas State fan base,” Snyder said.

“We are all grateful for the incredible leadership of Coach Snyder, and I was delighted when he affirmed to me that he plans to continue,” Athletics Director John Currie said. “We look forward to him leading the Wildcats into Palo Alto for our 2016 opener on September 2.”

Snyder will enter his 25th season at K-State in 2016 and has accumulated a 193-101-1 overall record with the Wildcats. The hall of fame coach will be the second-winningest active coach among FBS head coaches in 2016, while he has recorded the most wins of any active coach at one institution.

Following the 2016 Purple/White Spring Game, which will be held on April 23, the Wildcats open the 2016 season on September 2 at Stanford on the heels of their sixth straight bowl appearance and riding a 27-game home sellout streak.  The 2016 season will also mark the completion of Phase IIIB of the Bill Snyder Family Stadium master plan culminating $180 million in improvements to the stadium.  To join the K-State season ticket waiting list, contact the ticket office at 1-800-221-CATS or click here.
