Royals Avoid Arbitration on Three Players
KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) – The Royals have signed outfielder Jarrod Dyson, right-hander Louis Coleman and catcher Tony Cruz to one-year contracts, avoiding arbitration.
Dyson received a raise from $1.225 million last year to $1.725 million this season. He’s in the mix to be one of the Royals’ primary outfielders, along with Alex Gordon and Lorenzo Cain.
Coleman will make $750,000, the same as last season, while Cruz agreed to a $975,000 deal. He was acquired from the St. Louis Cardinals this offseason and made $775,000 last year.
All three can earn a $50,000 bonus for making the All-Star team.
The Royals have four remaining players eligible for arbitration: Cain, left-hander Danny Duffy, third baseman Mike Moustakas and catcher Drew Butera.

Chiefs Assistant, Pederson, to Accept Philadelphia Head Coaching Job
PHILADELPHIA (AP) – Kansas City offensive coordinator Doug Pederson has accepted the Philadelphia Eagles’ offer to become their coach, a person with knowledge of the decision tells The Associated Press.
The person spoke on condition of anonymity Thursday because the Eagles have not officially announced the hiring. Pederson can’t be officially hired as long as the Chiefs are in the playoffs. Kansas City plays at New England on Saturday.
Pederson started nine games at quarterback for the Eagles in 1999 and began his NFL coaching career as an assistant under Andy Reid in Philadelphia in 2009. Pederson followed Reid to Kansas City in 2013.
Philadelphia also interviewed Adam Gase, who was hired by Miami; Ben McAdoo, who was hired by the New York Giants; Tom Coughlin; and two of the Eagles’ assistant coaches during the 2015 season under Chip Kelly: Pat Shurmur and Duce Staley.

NCAA Votes to Allow Big 12 to Hold a Football Title Game
SAN ANTONIO (AP) – The Big 12 will be allowed to hold a football championship game in the future if it wants to under a rule change approved at the NCAA’s annual convention.
The change scraps the requirement that leagues have 12 members and play in two divisions in order to hold a title game. The new rule lets a smaller league play a title game pitting its top two teams, provided it plays a round-robin regular season schedule as the Big 12 does now.
The vote by the NCAA Division I Council passed 7-2 on Wednesday. The Atlantic Coast Conference and the American Athletic Conference voted against it and the Pac-12 didn’t vote.
The 10-member Big 12 is the only major conference that doesn’t play a football title game.
Missouri Admits Violations, Vacates 2013-14 Season
COLUMBIA, Mo. (AP) – Admitting it found NCAA violations in its men’s basketball program dating to 2011, Missouri on Wednesday banned itself from the postseason this year and said it is vacating all 23 wins from the 2013-14 season.
The NCAA is still investigating and Missouri said it was working with the organization in hopes of limiting the punishment to its self-imposed sanctions.
Missouri was 23-12 in 2013-14, Frank Haith’s final season before leaving for Tulsa. The Tigers won just nine games last season under new coach Kim Anderson, who did not immediately comment on the findings.
Besides the postseason ban, the school has stripped itself of one scholarship this season and a second scholarship no later than the 2017-18 season, plus has restricted recruiting through 2016-17.
