Royals Finalize Two-Year Deal with Lorenzo Cain

kcr smallKANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) – The Royals finalized their $17.5 million, two-year deal with Lorenzo Cain on Monday, buying out the All-Star outfielder’s final two years of arbitration.

Cain will receive $6.5 million this season and $11 million next season.

The 29-year-old Cain is coming off the best year of his six-year career, hitting .307 with 16 homers and 72 RBIs. He also was second in the American League with 28 stolen bases, and he became the first Royals player since 2011 to eclipse 100 runs scored.

The result of that landed Cain third in voting for the AL MVP award.

Cain also started all 16 postseason games in center field, batting .258 with two doubles, a homer and 11 RBIs as the Royals won their first World Series championship since 1985.

Jayhawks Defeat TCU

jayhawkLAWRENCE, Kan. (AP) – Wayne Selden Jr. scored 11 points, Carlton Bragg and Cheick Diallo provided a lift off the bench, and No. 1 Kansas slogged its way to a 70-63 victory over TCU on Saturday.

Bragg had 10 points, as did Perry Ellis and Devonte Graham, while Diallo had nine points and nine rebounds to help the Jayhawks (15-2, 4-1 Big 12) bounce back from a loss at West Virginia.

It was the 33rd consecutive win at Allen Fieldhouse for Kansas, matching the fourth-best streak in school history. It was also the Jayhawks’ seven straight win over the Horned Frogs.

Michael Williams had 13 points and Brandon Parrish and Chauncey Collins scored 11 apiece for TCU (9-8, 1-4), which remained close for a while thanks to a flurry of early 3-pointers.

The Jayhawks eventually took the perimeter away, and their size and depth in the post made it nearly impossible for TCU to score. Diallo finished with five blocks in just 21 minutes.

KANSAS STATE POSTGAME QUOTES

Head coach Bruce Weber

On Iowa State game plan….

“I do not think zone is really their thing. I do not think we attacked it well. We did not move, and we did not flash. I always blame myself, that I did not do a good enough job helping them learn. Some of it is basketball, not having that savvy feel. Some guys know how to attack the zone, some do not, and we have to do a better job teaching. Too many turnovers in the first half that gave them opportunities. One thing, they make their threes. [Georges] Niang had a big three, but they only made six. That is 18 points out of their 76, on the year they average eight, so that is 21 out of 85. They get a lot of points in the paint and that is what they did today, and they made big shots.”

On feeling of loss …

“You hope to make some progress. West Virginia stung, you had a game that you could have won. They [West Virginia] just played Oklahoma down to the wire, they beat Kansas and I thought we outcompeted them for a lot of the game. Tonight, and for Oklahoma, they outcompeted us. You thought it would have been a little better.”

On emotional level of the team…

“I think we let our offense, or lack of offensive execution and shot making effect our defense. Then we probably did not get our energy going. You cannot do that, you have to let the defense create the energy. We have some good young guys, they were very good the other night, tonight they were not quite as good. That is a part of the ups and downs you have with young people. They have to do a better job preparing. Justin [Edwards], I thought in the second half him and Wesley [Iwundu] stepped up their game and gave us something. In the first half, we did not get much out of anyone to be honest. Justin [Edwards], right before the end of the half got us going and gave us some energy.”

On playing from behind…

“I told them to keep fighting, we were down sixteen in the first half here last year. That is all you can do. Hopefully, we can execute a little better with some of the things we practiced.  Moving the basketball, we held the ball. You cannot hold the ball against a zone because it shifts. You have to move it, get it side-to-side, weak side, attack the close out, make the next pass, flatten it out. I thought in the second half, we got inside a little better. We got it below the free throw line. You cannot attack the zone from the Wildcat, they just stand there and laugh at you. That is something I have to help them do a better job of.”

Patriots Defeat the Chiefs in AFC Playoffs

small chiefsFOXBOROUGH, Mass. (AP) – Tom Brady hit Rob Gronkowski with two touchdown passes and reached over the goal line for another score Saturday to lead the New England Patriots into the AFC championship game with a 27-20 victory over the Kansas City Chiefs.

It’s the fifth straight trip to the conference title game for the defending Super Bowl champions.

The Patriots (13-4) will meet the winner of Sunday’s game between Pittsburgh and Denver for a spot in Super Bowl 50 as they try to become the first repeat NFL champs since they did it in 2003-04.

Royals, Ian Kennedy Reach Five-Year Deal

kcr twoKANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) – A person familiar with the situation says the Kansas City Royals and pitcher Ian Kennedy have agreed to a $70 million, five-year contract that includes an opt-out after the first two years.

The person spoke to The Associated Press on condition of anonymity Saturday because the deal will not be finalized until the 31-year-old Kennedy passes a physical.

The right-hander went 9-15 with a 4.28 ERA for the San Diego Padres last season. He has also pitched for the New York Yankees and the Arizona Diamondbacks.

The Royals were in search of another starter to replace Johnny Cueto, who became a free agent after helping Kansas City win its first World Series since 1985.

Blue Jays Defeat Washburn Rural

small blue jayIn a grind it out type of game the Junction City Blue Jays ( 4-5 ) relied on their defense to defeat the Washburn Rural Junior Blues ( 2-7 ) in basketball Friday night at the Shenk Gym by a score of 46-37.

Blue Jay coach Pat Battle felt the defense keyed the win. “Thirty-seven points, and they’ve got some explosive there. They’ve got some kids who flat shoot it, and I thought our kids did a good job of communicating, working, and arriving when the ball arrived. We really emphasize that.”

Senior Ricardo Erans led the Blue Jays with 17  points while Jenner Hickel had 14 for Washburn Rural.  It was the second consecutive win for Junction City, following a victory over Highland Park on Tuesday.

In the girls varsity game Washburn Rural ( 6-2 ) jumped out on top of Junction City ( 0-9 ) 27-18 at halftime, and then opened up a big lead in the third quarter enroute to a 65-53 victory over the Lady Jays. Junction City cut the final margin down considerably in the fourth quarter after training by 23 points at the end of the third quarter.

Kealee Rains scored 16 points for Junction City, while A’kia Fain and Ally Mckenzie both had 11 for the Lady Jays. Carly Bachelor led Washburn Rural with 21 points.
