Iowa State Defeats Kansas State

wildcat twoAMES, Iowa (AP) – Matt Thomas scored 20 points and Georges Niang added 17 to help 17th-ranked Iowa State beat Kansas State 80-61 on Saturday night, clinching its fifth straight 20-win season.

Jameel McKay scored 14 points with 17 rebounds off the bench for the notoriously-thin Cyclones (20-9, 9-7 Big 12), who got 24 points from their reserves.

Iowa State strung together 13-0 runs in each half, which proved to be the difference. The Wildcats pulled as close as 65-59 before backup Hallice Cooke’s 3 with just under four minutes left swung momentum back in favor of the Cyclones.

D.J. Johnson had 22 with nine boards for Kansas State (15-14, 4-12), which shot just 4 of 18 from 3-point range.

#220 Jefferey Walters, JCHS Junior (11-23), lost by fall to Brandon Huntley, Olathe North Senior (22-14). Walters finishes his season with a final record of 11-24.

JCHS Teams Sweep Topeka West

small blue jayThe Junction City Blue Jay basketball team got 28 points from Ricardo Erans and rolled to a 63-48 victory over the Topeka West Charge in the capitol city Friday night.

Blue Jay coach Pat Battle felt his team did a solid job of taking care of the basketball in the final five minutes of the game. “I thought we did a pretty good job of defending out on the perimeter, kind of slowing them down. And then we went 12 of 14 from the line in the fourth quarter. That’s what wins basketball games.”

As for Erans he hit six 3-point shots in helping the Blue Jays earn their ninth victory of the season.

In girls action the Lady Jays playing without their head coach Derek Petty, defeated Topeka West in overtime 64-59.

It appeared the Lady Jays would win in regulation but a late 3-point basket by Addison Donohue for Topeka West helped force a tie score and push the game into overtime. But A’kia Fain of Junction City was too much. She hit two key three point baskets and six free throws down the stretch to help seal the win.  Fain finished the game with 27 points.

Derek Petty was not on the bench for the Lady Jays Friday because of an administrative decision barring him from coaching in the contest. That was confirmed by JCHS Athletic Director Matt Westerhaus, who also noted that Petty will be back coaching the team in their Class 6A Substate Tournament game next week. That opponent is expected to be Washburn Rural.

In Petty’s abscence assistant coach G.G. Booth guided the Lady Jays.

  • K-State has just one home game left on Wednesday, March 2 vs. TCU (11-17, 2-13 Big 12) sandwiched between road contests at No. 17/17 Iowa State and surging Texas Tech (18-9, 8-7 Big 12) on Saturday, March 5.
  • K-State will play its 13th game against a ranked opponent on Saturday, which will surpass the 2010-11 and 2014-15 teams (12 each) for the most in school history. It will be the 43rd vs. a Top 25 foe during head coach Bruce Weber’s tenure, which represents 34 percent of his total games.
  • K-State owns the 18th-best strength of schedule with 10 of its 12 games against ranked foes coming in Big 12 play. Twelve losses have come to teams that are currently ranked in the AP Top 25, including 6 in Top 15. All 13 losses have come to teams with a combined record of 180-71 (.717).
  • Saturday’s game will be the 222nd in the series with K-State owning a 137-84 advantage, including a 50-48 mark on the road. The Cyclones, who have won 4 straight at home in the series, will be looking to sweep the season series for the first time since 2012. The Wildcats haven’t won a game at Hilton Coliseum since an 86-85 victory on Feb. 5, 2011.
  • Iowa State took the first game this season, 76-63, in Manhattan on Jan. 16, as the Cyclones earned their first win at Bramlage Coliseum since 2012 to halt a 3-game slide. Senior Justin Edwards led three players in double figures with a game-tying 19 points, while junior Wesley Iwundu tallied a near double-doublewith 11 points and a game-high 9 rebounds.
  • K-State has lost consecutive games to ranked foes, including a tough setback to No. 25/25 Texas on Monday, 71-70. The Wildcats nearly rallied from an 8-point deficit, closing to a single point on 3 different occasions, as freshman Dean Wade’s 3-pointer rimmed off at the buzzer.
  • The loss spoiled an impressive effort from senior Justin Edwards, who led the Wildcats in points (20), rebounds (8) and assists (5). The 20 points marked a new career-high in his K-State career and was his 6th straight game in double figures. He is averaging 15.3 points during this span.
  • Junior D.J. Johnson also continued his strong play vs. Texas, scoring in double figures for 6th time in last 8 games. In starting the last 6 games, he is averaging 12.2 points on 58.1 percent shooting with 6.3 rebounds.

Blue Jays Sending Six to State Wrestling

Bob Laster
Bob Laster

Six Junction City Blue Jays will compete in the Class 6A State Wrestling Tournament Friday and Saturday at Hartman Arena in Park City.

Coach Bob Laster said they include Kade Danielson at 106 pounds, Max Bazan 113, John Clark 145, Kamari Smith 152, Aryus Jones 160, and Jeffery Walters at 220 pounds.

Laster took his team to Park City on Thursday, one day ahead of the tournament. “Main reason that we go down is they have weigh-in on Friday. It’s like at seven o’clock. If we did not go down early that means we would have to depart somewhere around 4:30 in order to get there.”

Laster also likes to get his team an opportunity to practice at least once at Hartman Arena before the tournament.

The Talk of JC, KJCK AM, will provide wrestling reports both days of the tournament with Kevin Griffith and Mike Goodwin. The first report is scheduled at 9:43 a.m. Friday.
