Original Basketball Rules on Display

jayhawkLAWRENCE, Kan. (AP) – The University of Kansas has put James Naismith’s original rules of basketball on display at the new DeBruce Center, which was built to house the historical two-page document.

The 32,000-square-foot, $21.7 million DeBruce Center is the permanent home for “The Original 13 Rules of Basket Ball,” which Naismith wrote in 1891. The center opened earlier, but the Naismith document was installed Friday.

The installation includes a security system and humidity checks and is located in the Rules Gallery, a passageway between the DeBruce Center’s atrium and Allen Fieldhouse.

The Lawrence Journal-World reports (https://j.mp/1UZtxHR ) the display also includes a 1939 radio interview of Naismith describing how he invented the game.

University of Kansas alumnus David Booth and his wife, Suzanne, bought the Naismith rules at auction in 2010 for $4.3 millio

Rowing Set for Big 12 Championships

ksu rowing two
MANHATTAN, Kan. – After strong performances throughout the season, the Kansas State women’s rowing team heads back east as it prepares to compete at the Big 12 Championships at Melton Hill Lake in Oak Ridge, Tennessee on May 14-15.

“I am looking forward to this weekend because the pressure is off of the girls,” head coach Patrick Sweeney said. “The one time we have had good water they have performed well. That was here in Tennessee. When they get a chance to row consistently, they are moving well.”

K-State will look to post its third-straight top-three performance at Big 12s after the Wildcats finish in third place last season. The meet will consist of five scored races – 1st Varsity 8, 2nd Varsity 8, 3rd Varsity 8, 1st Varsity 4 and 2nd Varsity 4 – against its fellow conference foes.

The Wildcats tallied 89 points, finishing 18 points behind runner-up Oklahoma (107), while Texas took home the 2015 title. K-State also saw medal performances by the 1st Varsity 8 and the 2nd Varsity 8.

The Wildcats are very familiar with Melton Hill Lake as the team competed there in April at the Southern Intercollegiate Rowing Association Championships (SIRAs). At that race, K-State saw all five of its boats medal, including gold medal performances by its 1V8, 2V8 and 1N8. The 2V4 took silver at the race, while the 1V4 claimed the bronze medal.

A lack of water time has hindered a lot of what the team has tried to do this year and rough water played a factor in the team’s loss to Kansas two weekends ago at the Sunflower Showdown. However, the team has been able to get on the water consistently heading into the conference meet, something Sweeney believes has been very beneficial.

“We actually got on the water consecutively last Thursday, Friday and Saturday, something which we have not done all year. Those three days were important to go out and you could feel improvement. Getting three days on the water, we saw improvement and we saw better form on Saturday.”

The team will look to all in this weekend and with no pressure, Sweeney expects the team to be extremely competitive.

“If we get good water this weekend we can really go for it,” Sweeney added. “We have nothing to lose because no one is expecting them to do well and I think that they can. I think we might upset a few people.”

MANHATTAN, Kan. – The Kansas State women’s rowing team was recognized for their academic excellence as 19 members of the team were selected to the Academic All-Big 12 team, the conference office announced on Wednesday.

All 19 Wildcat rowers selected for the honor were named to the First Team.

“We are really proud of how all of these women were able to balance their academic work with their tough practice and competition schedule,” head coach Patrick Sweeney said. “It is a tremendous honor for each of them.”

Senior Jessica Kuhlman was also recognized as one of 10 rowers in the conference for maintaining a 4.0 GPA. The Great Bend, Kansas, native is a graduate student pursuing her master’s degree in Gerontology.

First team members consist of those who have maintained a 3.20 or better GPA while the second team selections hold a 3.00 to 3.19 GPA.

To qualify, student-athletes must maintain a 3.00 GPA or higher either cumulative or the two previous semesters and must have participated in 60 percent of their team’s scheduled contests. Freshmen and transfers are not eligible in their first year of academic residence. Senior student-athletes who have participated for a minimum of two years and meet all the criteria except percent of participation are also eligible.

K-State competes at the Big 12 Championships, which will be held on May 14-15 on Melton Hill Lake in Oak Ridge, Tennessee. This will be the second time the team has raced on the lake, the first coming at the Southern Intercollegiate Rowing Association Championship (SIRA) on April 16th and 17th.

Coach Ladd Braden, “We had another great day with both the boy’s and girl’s squads. Senior Zack Melius came back after two hamstring pulls to take the Wheat State League 200 meter dash gold, for the fourth straight year! Senior Sara Casaus did the same in the 100 meter dash, taking the gold for her fourth straight league title in that event as well.  In the pole vault and the 800 meter run, the Bomber boys swept both events, taking first, second, and third.  In the 200, 400, and the 3200 meter runs, the Bombers took first and second in all three of those running events. Junior Jacob Judy took the gold in the discus for the second straight year.  Junior Sierra Otto fought off two tough competitors in both the 100 and 300 meter hurdles to take home both of those gold medals today.  Freshman Kevin Jackson competed hard for the bronze medal in the 800 meter run and freshman Sydney Barker with a personal best run, took the bronze in the girl’s open 800 meter also.”  Coach Braden, “ We simply had several kids step up to the plate today.  Junior Chris Hardin is a great example of this.  Chris came into the triple jump today with a ninth place seeding, and came away with the third place bronze medal to help the Bombers take home their third straight Wheat State League Track and Field title!”

Wakefield’s next meet will be Friday May 20th when the Bombers travel to Frankfort for the 1A Regional Track and Field Meet.  Starting time will be 1:00 p.m. with all the field events.

Royals Snap Losing Streak

kcrNEW YORK (AP) – Salvador Perez hit a three-run homer in yet another big first inning against Michael Pineda, and the slumping Kansas City Royals rebounded to beat the New York Yankees 7-3 Wednesday night.

Down by four runs six batters in, New York clawed back to 4-3 against Yordano Ventura before Lorenzo Cain hit a two-run single in the sixth against reliever Nick Goody.

Kendrys Morales added a solo homer in the seventh off Phil Coke as the Royals won for just the fourth time in their past 15 games.

After winning the opening two games of the four-game series, the Yankees were hoping to string together three straight victories for the first time since Sept. 1-4. They are 0-5 this year when attempting to win a third consecutive game.

Ventura (3-2), coming off losses at Seattle and Cleveland, gave up three runs and six hits in six innings.

Mondesi Suspended

kcrNEW YORK (AP) – Kansas City Royals prospect Raul Mondesi has been suspended for 50 games for testing positive for clenbuterol, a banned steroid.

The penalty was announced Tuesday against the 20-year-old infielder, who is on Kansas City’s 40-man roster but had been optioned to Double-A.

Mondesi is the son of former NL Rookie of the Year Raul Mondesi. The younger Mondesi was the first player to make his big league debut in the World Series.

A positive test for a performance-enhancing drug usually results in an 80-game suspension, but Major League Baseball and the players’ union agreed to the reduced punishment after Mondesi showed the steroid came from cold medicine. Mondesi says he took the over-the-counter medication without reading the label or consulting his trainer.

He apologized and said he never intended to “take a substance that would give me an unfair advantage on the field.”

Young to Return to Kansas City to Have Forearm Examined

kcr fourNEW YORK (AP) – A day after giving up a career-high five home runs, Royals pitcher Chris Young said he will return to Kansas City on Wednesday to have an MRI of his right forearm.

The right-hander is 1-5 with a 6.88 ERA and has given up 13 homers in seven starts and 32 1/3 innings this season. He told the Royals after Tuesday’s games he has been bothered by inflammation in his forearm.

Young, who turns 37 on May 25, will be examined by team physician Dr. Vincent Key. Young said he began to feel a problem with the forearm late in spring training.

Young has given up nine home runs in his last three starts. While his fastball has averaged 88 mph, up 1 mph from last year, the lack of late movement has hurt him.

Blue Jays – Lady Jays Split Doubleheaders

small blue jayThe Junction City Blue Jay baseball team split two games with Hayden in Topeka on Tuesday.

The Blue Jays won the opener 3-2 and lost the nightcap 13-3.

Junction City is 11-9 on the season.

Lady Jay softball split two games with Hayden on Senior Day at Cleary Field.

Junction City won the opener 10-8 and Hayden took the nightcap 3-1.
