Blue Jays Roll Past Gateway Stem

small-blue-jayRyan Hennington ran for three touchdowns as the Junction City Blue Jays cruised to a 43-14 win over the Gateway Stem Jaguars of St. Louis, Missouri on a neutral field in Lansing, Kansas.

The Blue Jays got on the board with 5:03 remaining in the first quarter with a 12-yard touchdown run by Hennington and never trailed in the ballgame. The two touchdowns for Gateway Stem were scored in the fourth quarter after the Blue Jays had built up a 43-0 lead. There was a running clock for the entire fourth quarter.

Blue Jay coach Randall Zimmerman praised the Jaguars, saying they were a good football team, and the Blue Jays did some nice things. “The only thing I was disappointed in the first half, we have a tough time just making plays. We want to create plays. That git us in trouble offensively, that got us in trouble defensively a little bit, and special team-wise as well as well. But once we got settled in and got going, saw some really things from our kids.”

The Blue Jays, 6-1, play at Topeka Seaman next Friday. Gateway Stem fell to 6-3 with the loss.

Coach Braden, “It was great to see our kids step up to the plate and run great as a team today.  Solomon had a great team and we had to run our best in order for us to have a chance at beating them, and all six boys did just that!  We ended up with a first place finish in the league and all six boys ran personal best times!  Leading the way was senior Johnathan Bowen.  Johnathan’s time of 17:01 erased Wakefield’s school record by 10 seconds, a record that had been on the board for twenty years.  I couldn’t have been more proud of him!  For the girls, they finished in second place as a team and freshman Dakota Swader took the league forth place medal and lowered her own school record by a minute and a half.  The girls, just like the boys, all had personal best performance times. It was just a great day to run and all of our kids competed at a high level.”

The Wakefield Bombers next meet is the 1A Regional. They will head east again 20 minutes to Leonardville on Saturday morning October 22nd for the 1A Regional Cross Country Meet.

Oklahoma’s Stoops, Kansas State’s Snyder to face off again

NORMAN, Okla. (AP) — Oklahoma coach Bob Stoops would be just fine if he didn’t have to face one of his most respected mentors, Kansas State coach Bill Snyder, each year. Stoops says Snyder’s teams are “too good all the time.”OU VS KSTATE FOOTBALL

Oklahoma (3-2, 2-0 Big 12), ranked No. 19 , faces Kansas State (3-2, 1-1) on Saturday, and as often has been the case, the winner will be well positioned early in the conference race.

Stoops and Snyder go back to the late 1970s. Stoops played at Iowa when Snyder was offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach under coach Hayden Fry. Stoops joined Iowa’s coaching staff as a graduate assistant while Snyder was still there.

Stoops was an assistant coach on Snyder’s first seven Kansas State teams from 1989 to 1995, when they helped the program emerge as a powerhouse.

Both have continued to excel since Stoops left Kansas State to become defensive coordinator at Florida, then took the job at Oklahoma in 1999. They rank first and second among active FBS coaches in career wins at their current schools.

Stoops has a 9-3 record against Snyder, but Kansas State has won the past two games in Norman — 24-19 in 2012 and 31-30 in 2014.

Chiefs’ Justin Houston cleared for football-related workouts

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — Chiefs linebacker Justin Houston has been cleared to resume football activity for the first time since having surgery to repair the ACL in his left knee in February.kc chiefs

Chiefs trainer Rick Burkholder said Wednesday that Houston visited Dr. James Andrews on Oct. 3, the day after a loss in Pittsburgh, and was given clearance to do football-related workouts.

The Chiefs were off last week.

Houston cannot be removed from the physically unable to perform list until next week, so the four-time Pro Bowl linebacker must continue to do his workouts away from the rest of the team.

Chiefs coach Andy Reid said he will evaluate Houston on a day-by-day basis, but acknowledged he could join practices next week. There still is no timetable for his return to games.

K-State Set for Friday Showdown at Bradley Pink Classic

MANHATTAN, Kan. – Coming off of a three-week break since its last competition, the Kansas State cross country team heads to Peoria, Illinois, to compete in the Bradley Pink Classic at the Newman Golf Course on Friday bradley pink classicafternoon.

The Wildcats’ final competition before the Big 12 Championship will begin at 3:30 p.m. CT with the women’s 6K race, followed by the men’s 8K race, which is slated to begin at 4:15 p.m. CT.

“We have had a couple of weeks to prepare for this weekend and I believe we are making good progress,” head coach Ryun Godfrey said. “I am looking forward to Friday afternoon. It is a good field and should be a very competitive race for both the men and the women.”

K-State competed at the Bradley Classic last season, posting two strong results in its final meet before the Big 12 Championship. The men went on to finish in 10th place in the meet, while the women recorded their second-straight top-five finish of 2015 with a fourth-place finish.

The 2015 outing in Illinois saw Morgan Wedekind earn her third top-5 finish of the year as she led all Wildcat runners with a fifth-place finish. Her time of 20:34 was the fourth-fastest time at the course in school history. On the men’s side, Colton Donahue led the men with a 24th-place finish, crossing the finish line in 24:30, the fastest time at the course in school history.

In the Wildcats’ most recent competition, the Cowboy Jamboree, Wedekind continued to post dominant results, finishing in fourth place with a final time of 18:26.8 to post her third top-five finish in as many races. Her efforts in Stillwater saw her earn Big 12 Runner of the Week honors for the second time this season.

Donahue led the men’s side, posting a 12th place finish with a time of 26:30.8, while fellow junior Bryan Zack crossed the finish line five seconds behind him, posting a final time of 26:35.2. Both the men and women finished in third place overall for the second-straight meet.
