Royals Get Second Straight Win Over Astros

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — Jason Vargas tossed five solid innings for his eighth victory, Cheslor Cuthbert drove in three runs and the Kansas City Royals defeated the Houston Astros 7-5 on Wednesday night.

The anticipated pitching duel between Vargas (8-3) and Dallas Keuchel, who have the two best ERAs in the majors, never materialized. Keuchel was a late scratch with an illness after going out to warm up.

Instead, the Astros started right-hander Dayan Diaz, who was just called up from Triple-A Fresno. Diaz (0-1) gave up three runs and four hits, including Lorenzo Cain’s solo homer, in 2 2/3 innings.

Vargas (8-3), who pitched a shutout against Cleveland in his previous start, allowed two runs on Brian McCann’s home run and RBI single. He gave up six hits, a walk and hit a batter. Vargas’ ERA inched up from 2.08 to 2.18 in the win, the Royals‘ second straight over the Astros.

Bob Stoops Retires

NORMAN, Okla. (AP) — Bob Stoops had been the longest-tenured active head football coach. Not anymore.

Stoops has retired after 18 seasons at Oklahoma. Stoops was 190-48 with the Sooners, winning 10 Big 12 titles and the 2000 national championship.

The 56-year-old Stoops says the time is right to step down, but adds his health had nothing to do with his decision.

The Sooners moved quickly to name a replacement, elevating offensive coordinator Lincoln Riley. The 33-year-old Riley becomes the youngest head coach in the Bowl Subdivision.

Brigade Improve to 4-1

The Junction City Brigade defeated the Liberty Monarchs 10-5 Tuesday in Liberty, Mo.

Both teams are now 4-1 on the season.

The teams split a two-game series this week with the Monarchs defeating Junction City 11-3 on Monday evening at Rathert Field.

Fifteen Wildcats Seek National Glory at the NCAA Outdoor Championships

EUGENE, Ore. – Coming off one of the most historic outdoor season’s in recent history that saw the women’s program win its third Big 12 title and multiple athletes on both the men’s and women’s teams shatter school records, the Kansas State track and field team looks to close out the 2017 campaign with a bang as the Wildcats send 15 athletes to compete at the NCAA Championships at Historic Hayward Field on June 7-10.

The 10th-ranked K-State women enter the national meet with nine individual entries, as well as a 4×100-meter relay squad that broke the school record in the event at the NCAA West Preliminary to qualify for a spot at the NCAA Championships, while the 82nd-ranked men have five entries.

“It looks like we are going to find out what kind of ‘mudders’ we are this week,” Director of Track and Field and Cross Country Cliff Rovelto said about the NCAA Championships. “This group has had a great year and all of the athletes are well prepared. We are looking forward to watching them compete this weekend.”

K-State’s women head into the week with an arsenal of talent that could very well propel them into the top-10 in the national team competition. Leading this group of talented women is sophomore Shadae Lawrence, who currently holds the best discus throw (62.59m/205-04) in the Big 12, the West Region and all of Division I. The Big 12 champion in the event, Lawrence is making her second appearance in Eugene after finishing in fourth place last season to earn First Team All-America honors.

Three other Wildcat women will also begin competition with top-five marks in Division I in their respective events. Freshman Nina Schultz opens competition on Friday in just her second collegiate heptathlon after qualifying for the event in early April with a score of 6,021 points, a mark that is fourth in Division I and in program history. After winning an individual conference title in the high jump at the Big 12 Championship, she earned Big 12 Outstanding Freshman of the Year and USTFCCCA Midwest Region Women’s Field Athlete of the Year.

Junior Janee’ Kassanavoid’s school-record hammer throw toss of 66.97m/219-09 at the Texas Invitational has her ranked fourth on the descending order list heading into the second trip to the national meet of her career, while Shardia Lawrence has the fourth-best triple jump mark (13.79m/45-03) in Division I as she makes her first appearance at Hayward Field.

K-State’s 4×100-meter relay squad is the first in program history to ever compete at the NCAA Championships after Akia Guerrier, A’Keyla Mitchell, Ranae McKenzie and Wurrie Njadoe broke the school record in the race with a qualifying time of 44.20 to finish in seventh place at the NCAA West Preliminary. Claudette Allen has also played in integral role in the success of the 4×100 this season, running the anchor leg for the second-place squad at the Big 12 Championship.

McKenzie will also compete in the 400-meter hurdles, an event which she has thrived in this season after qualifying for her second-straight NCAA Championships with a season-best time of 57.96. Helene Ingvaldsen (hammer throw) and Konstantina Romaiou (triple jump) each make their first appearance in Eugene in their respective events after Ingvaldsen took seventh place at the NCAA West Preliminary with a personal-best toss of 64.14m/210-05 and Romaiou took the last qualifying spot with a leap of 13.08m/42-11 to finish in 12th place.

Despite the small number of men in action, the five who will represent the Wildcats have the chance to make some noise at the national level. Christoff Bryan enters as a favorite to win the men’s high jump after a dominant effort in the qualifying round in Austin saw him finish in a tie for first place with a leap of 2.18m/7-01.75. Bryan finished in second place at the NCAA Championships in high jump last season.

Sophomore Brett Neelly is also looking to match his performance at last season’s NCAA Championships where he became the first male shot putter to score for the Wildcats since 1985 with a career-best throw of 19.16m/62-10.50. The 2017 Big 12 Outdoor Champion in the event, the sophomore qualified by taking ninth place in Austin.

The final trio of Wildcat men will compete in the hammer throw on Wednesday and all three currently sit in the top-three in the program’s all-time list. Junior Mitch Dixon competes in his first-ever NCAA Championships with the title of “school-record holder” next to his name as he recorded the program’s top-mark of 65.95m/216-04 to take seventh at the West Preliminary.

Senior Brady Grunder is making his second-trip to Eugene after finishing just behind Dixon at the West Preliminary with a throw of 65.91m/216-03 to finish in eighth place. Grunder recorded a 22nd-place effort in the hammer throw finals at last season’s final meet. Fellow senior Kyle Smith is making his first appearance at Hayward Field after a gritty performance in Austin saw him claim the final qualifying spot in the West with a career-best mark of 64.99m/213-02.

K-State is the first school to qualify more than two male hammer throwers since Virginia Tech sent a trio in 2011. Georgia is the only other school since 2005 to accomplish the feat.

Wednesday’s competition is slated to begin at 4 p.m., CT, with the men’s hammer throw, with Thursday’s action also beginning at 4 p.m., CT, with the women’s hammer throw. Schultz will kick off the final two days of competition with the heptathlon 100-meter hurdles at 2:30 p.m., CT, on Friday and the heptathlon long jump at 1:30 p.m., CT, on Saturday.
Tickets for the NCAA Championships will be available on an all-meet and single-session basis and can purchased here. Fans who cannot travel to Eugene can catch the action on the ESPN family of networks, which can be found here, while live results for all four days of competition will be provided by Flash Results and can be accessed here.

More information on the meet, including ticket information, heat sheets and full schedule, can be found on NCAA’s Outdoor Track and Field Championship homepage, which can be found here.

Lights Out at Rathert Field

Brigade vs. Monarchs

The Monday evening baseball game between the Junction City Brigade and Liberty Monarchs had to be called in the top of the 8th inning after a power failure. The Monarchs were the winners, 11-3.

With the Monarchs at bat in the top of the 8th the electricity suddenly went out. Power returned to the beer garden, bleacher area in the grandstand and  the press box and briefly to one field light. The rest remained dark. Street lights and houses around the ballpark had restored electric service.

Westar Energy crews responded to assess the problem and try to make repairs.

The loss was the first of the season for Junction City in four games, while Liberty is 4-0. The two teams play Tuesday night at Liberty.

The contest was preceded by Junction City Junior baseball opening ceremonies which drew a big crowd and took up all parking spots in the Rathert Field, Cleary Field and 12th Street Community Center area. Volunteers were honored and all of the Junior Baseball teams continued the annual tradition of walking the basepaths while they were being introduced. Many of the fans remained for the game between the Brigade and Monarchs.

Rovelto has now been recognized as the Midwest Region Women’s Coach of the Year eight times in his career, while both Schultz and Watson are earning their respective honors for the first time.

He will lead the program into the NCAA Championships with a total of nine entries on the women’s side as well as the women’s 4×100-meter relay. The relay squad is the first in school history to qualify for the season-ending competition.

Kassanavoid also flourished this season, shattering the school record at the Texas Invitational with a toss of 66.97m/219-08.

Schultz helped lead the women’s team to its first Big 12 title since 2002 with an individual title of her own in women’s high jump with a personal-best effort of 1.82m/5-11.50. Over the course of the weekend, Schultz also recorded a personal best in the javelin throw (47.67m/156-05) and posted solid performances in the long jump (6.41m/21-00.50 (3.3)), 100-meter hurdles (13.40 (3.5)) and the 4×400-meter relay (3:36.94) to earn High Point Scorer of the Meet honors after accumulating 25 points.

Earlier in the season, the freshman broke the Canadian U20 national record and won her first collegiate heptathlon at the Jim Click Combined Events. Her score of 6,021 points is the fourth-best point total in team history and is currently the fourth-best heptathlon score in Division I.

K-State’s final competition of the 2016-17 season will be the NCAA Championships, which will be held in Eugene, Oregon at historic Hayward Field on June 7-10. More information on the meet, including ticket information and a complete schedule, can be found at the meet’s homepage here.

Indians Shut Out Royals

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — Roberto Perez and Daniel Robertson helped the Indians batter Royals pitcher Eric Skoglund before a long rain delay washed out both starters, and Cleveland went on to beat Kansas City 8-0 on Sunday to avoid a three-game sweep.

Perez and Robertson ripped two-run doubles off Skoglund (1-1) in the second inning before rain moved in during the bottom half. Lightning went off in the distance, and the tarp was pulled onto the field for 1 hour, 50 minutes.

When the game resumed, the Indians quickly tacked on runs to put it away.

Dan Otero (1-0) replaced Cleveland starter Trevor Bauer after the delay and allowed one hit over 2 1/3 innings to earn his first win since Sept. 22, when he also got the decision in relief against Kansas City.

Jason Kipnis homered and drove in two for the Indians. Robertson finished with three RBIs.
