KSU’s Alsop WIns YETI FLW College Fishing National Championship Fish-Off

FLORENCE, Ala. (June 3, 2017) – For just the second time in YETI FLW College Fishing history, the National Championship winners Travis Blenn and Kyle Alsop from Kansas State University faced off Saturday in a one-day fish-off on Wilson Lake in North Alabama to decide which team member would represent their school at the 2017 Forrest Wood Cup, the world championship of bass fishing.

After the scales settled and the final fish had been weighed, Alsop won the Forrest Wood Cup qualification with a five-bass limit totaling 10 pounds, 5 ounces. Blenn weighed a five-bass limit totaling 7 pounds, 7 ounces, giving Alsop the win and advancing him to compete against the best anglers in the world on Lake Murray in Columbia, South Carolina at the Forrest Wood Cup.

“This has been such an unbelievable experience this week,” said Alsop, a recent KSU mechanical engineering graduate who resides in Overland Park, Kansas. “I can’t believe that I’m going to fish in the Forrest Wood Cup. I might get my tail whipped, but I’m going to have fun doing it.”

Anderson is guaranteed at least a $10,000 paycheck, as that amount is awarded to the last-place finisher at the Forrest Wood Cup. The angler that wins the Forrest Wood Cup will earn $300,000 – professional bass fishing’s most lucrative prize.

“I can’t wait to sit down and start looking at some maps and doing a little research,” Alsop said. “I’m going to treat it like every other tournament I guess, but we’ll see what happens. Our old teammate on the fishing team Ryan Patterson won a national championship there in 2012, so I’m definitely going to talk to him for some advice. I cannot wait until August.”

The final standings after the one-day fish-off on Wilson Lake were:

1st:  Kansas State University – Kyle Alsop, Overland Park, Kan., five bass, 10-5, Entry into 2017 Forrest Wood Cup

2nd:  Kansas State University – Travis Blenn, Westmoreland, Kan., five bass, 7-7

Brigade Win Home Opener

Fireworks at Rathert Field on opening night.

Behind five innings of shutout baseball from pitcher Blake Grellhesl the Junction City Brigade rolled to a 6-3 win over the Rossville Rattlers Saturday night at Rathert Field.

Grellhesl started for Junction City and left after five innings with a 5-0 lead. A combination of relief pitchers held off Rossville, with Charlie Peyla of Junction City, throwing a scoreless eighth inning for the Brigade.

Junction City jumped on top of the Rattlers earlier by scoring four runs in the first inning on the strength of two hits, a walk and two errors by Rossville. They added solo runs in the third and eighth innings before a large home opener crowd at Rathert field.

Brigade coach Seth Wheeler was proud of the performance by Grellhesl. “He was so efficient with his pitch count. He was only supposed to throw three, but he was just so efficient and getting early outs that we just kept throwing him out there for one more and then one more and he was able to get us through five. He’s the reason we won.”

The win completed a three-game of the Rattlers by Junction City. The brigade took the first two games of the series in Rossville Thursday and Friday nights.

The home opener at Rathert Field also included Brigadier General Patrick Frank throwing out the first pitch, and remarks to the crowd by both Frank and U.S. Senator Jerry Moran before the ballgame.

The night ended with a fireworks display at the ballpark.

Royals Hammer Indians

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — Lorenzo Cain capped a six-run fifth inning with a two-run homer, Jason Hammel settled down after a shaky start and the Kansas City Royals routed the Cleveland Indians 12-5 on Saturday.

Whit Merrifield and Mike Moustakas had two-run doubles off Carlos Carrasco (5-3) during the Royals’ big inning, helping them overcome a 3-0 hole and ensure a series win over their division rival.

Hammel (2-6) gave up homers to Carlos Santana and Bradley Zimmer in the third, but he retired 15 of his next 17 batters before giving way to Mike Minor with two outs in the seventh.

Hammel struck out seven without a walk for his first win since beating Cleveland on May 5.

The Royals tacked on five more runs in the seventh against the best bullpen in the big leagues, a relief crew that entered the game with a 2.17 ERA.

Brigade Improve to 2-0

The Junction City Brigade rolled past the Rossville Rattlers 15-5 on Friday night in Rossville.

The Brigade reported that Lane Flemming went 4-5 with a home run and four rbi’s in the victory.

The two teams play again Saturday night at 7 p.m. at Rathert

Royals Get Shutout from Vargas

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — Jason Vargas tossed his first shutout in nearly three years Friday night, outdueling Royals nemesis Josh Tomlin and sending Kansas City to a 4-0 victory over the Cleveland Indians. The Royals scored their first run off Tomlin with two down in the sixth when Lorenzo Cain beat out an infield single — he was initially ruled out, but the call was quickly overturned.

Amid backlash, Snyder grants Sutton transfer request

MANHATTAN, Kan. – K-State Athletics Director Gene Taylor and Head Football Coach Bill Snyder announced today that Corey Sutton has been granted a full release from his scholarship and is permitted to transfer and be eligible for athletics aid at any of the institutions to which he requested.

“After having further dialogue with Coach Snyder and the Sutton family, we believe that it is in everyone’s best interest to grant Corey his full release,” said Taylor. “We wish Corey the best as he continues his athletic and academic career.”

“I would like to apologize to Corey and his family for my remarks last night which included sensitive and private information,” Snyder added. “I spoke out of line and for that I express a sincere regret for my comments.”

Chiefs waive 2 players, sign tight end, safety

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — The Chiefs have waived wide receiver Jamari Staples and safety Devin Chappell and signed tight end Orson Charles and safety Damariay Drew as they wrap up their second week of voluntary practices.

The Chiefs announced the moves Thursday.

Charles was a fourth-round pick out of Georgia by the Bengals, with whom he spent the first two years of his career. He appeared in two games last season for the Lions.

Drew, who played at Cal, worked out for the Chiefs before the draft.

The Chiefs have four more days of organized team activities next week before they gather for their mandatory minicamp, which runs June 13-15.

K-State’s Snyder criticized for refusing transfer request

MANHATTAN, Kan. (AP) — Kansas State coach Bill Snyder is defending his choice not to grant a wide receiver a release from his scholarship, a decision that has sparked controversy around his program.

Corey Sutton announced his desire to transfer, claiming Snyder did not follow through on certain promises of playing time. Sutton, who is from suburban Charlotte, North Carolina, told The Wichita Eagle that he provided Kansas State a list of 35 potential destinations and all of them were denied.

Snyder said Thursday night that his view is that players make a commitment to the program when they sign a national letter of intent, just as the program makes a commitment to them with a scholarship.

Sutton, who appeared in 10 games as a freshman last season, could leave for another school without receiving a release but he could not be on scholarship next season.

Brigade Open with a Win

The Junction City Brigade opened their season at Rossville with a 14-5 win over the Rossville Rattlers in Rossville.

According to the Brigade Facebook page Junction City scored seven runs in the fourth inning and Matt Westphal hit two home runs in the game for the Brigade. Junction City plays at Rossville again Friday night at 7 p.m.

Junction City hosts Rossville at Rathert Field at 7 p.m. Saturday.
