Chiefs win again to improve to 3-0

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — The Kansas City Chiefs rolled into Arrowhead Stadium to play the red-hot Baltimore Ravens without their best wide receiver, their lead running back and their stalwart left tackle.

They still had Patrick Mahomes, though.

The reigning league MVP threw for 374 yards and three touchdowns in another record-setting performance, and Kansas City’s defense corralled Ravens quarterback Lamar Jackson most of the rain-soaked afternoon, allowing the Chiefs to squeak out a 33-28 victory Sunday.

“Everyone gets reps with the starters, and guys just build that confidence that they can play,” said Mahomes, whose 13 games of at least 300 yards passing broke Kurt Warner’s mark for the most in the first 20 games of a career. “Whenever someone gets an opportunity they make plays.”

Such as wide receivers Demarcus Robinson and Mecole Hardman, who had TD catches while Tyreek Hill recovers from a broken collarbone. Or LeSean McCoy and Darrell Williams, who combined for 116 yards rushing and a score in place of injured running back Damien Williams. Or Cam Erving, who filled in for left tackle Eric Fisher and helped to limit the Ravens to a single sack.

“I trust that guys are going to step up and play,” said Chiefs coach Andy Reid, whose 210th win broke a tie with Chuck Knoll for sixth-most in NFL history. “Each one of them collectively had a pretty good day. They took advantage of their opportunity.”

Missed opportunities ultimately doomed the Ravens. They were stuffed once on fourth down, and three times they failed to convert on a 2-point conversion, leaving them chasing points all game.

West Virginia holds on to defeat Kansas

LAWRENCE, Kan. (AP) — Kendall Austin threw 202 yards, Martell Pettaway ran for a pair of scores, and West Virginia held on for a 29-24 victory over Kansas to open Big 12 play Saturday.

Kennedy McCoy added 73 yards rushing and a touchdown, and Evan Staley bounced back from an early miss to hit three field goals, as the Mountaineers (3-1) improved to 8-1 against the Jayhawks.

The Mountaineers held Kansas (2-2) to 377 yards total offense, one week after new coach Les Miles’ bunch had 567 yards and five TDs in a rare road rout of Boston College. And much of the yardage Saturday came as the Jayhawks drove frantically for a touchdown with 2:10 left in the game.

Carter Stanley led the Jayhawks with 235 yards passing and three touchdowns, but he also threw a costly interception when they were trailing 23-17 midway through the fourth quarter.

Pettaway finished the ensuing drive with his second TD run to make it a two-possession game.

West Virginia and Kansas had played to a first-half draw, though the real winner was the wind. It was whipping out of the south at 25 mph, making it tough for both offenses to move the ball.

The Mountaineers scored first — with the wind — on McCoy’s short plunge, then Kansas answered — also with the wind — when Stanley hit Kwamie Lassiter with a 28-yard TD strike.

The momentum shifted late in the first half, though. The Jayhawks had the ball, the wind and three timeouts in the closing minutes but went three-and-out and punted. West Virginia then raced 51 yards in just 49 seconds to set up Staley’s go-ahead field goal.

The Mountaineers kept the momentum to start the second half.

Pettway, getting his first carry of the game, picked through a couple tackles at the line of scrimmage and cruised 23 yards for the score. And when Kansas got a chip-shot field goal and appeared to recover the onside kick, Jamahl Horne was flagged for kick-catch interference.

West Virginia was given the ball back and drove for another field goal for a 20-10 lead.

Stanley gave the Jayhawks a chance when he hit Andrew Parchment on a 75-yard catch-and-run. But after West Virginia got another field goal, the Jayhawks’ quarterback ruined any chance of a comeback when his throw to the sideline was picked off by the Mountaineers’ Keith Washington II.

Exciting night of volleyball unfolds at the Shenk Gym

The Junction City Lady Jays played two tough matches against Emporia and Topeka High Thursday evening at the Shenk Gym.

In the first match Emporia defeated the Lady Jays 17-15, 25-22, 26-24. Against Topeka High the Lady Jays came out on the winning end 29-27, 21-25 and 25-9. A large student section kept up the cheers for Junction City. Coach Basil Nevill addressed the support. “They did a fantastic job. We had a lot of football players that made their way in, and they’re really supportive of the girls.”

In the match against Topeka High Nevill thought the Lady Jays had perhaps lost their mental edge in the second game loss to Topeka High, but that changed in the dominant win in game three. “I just encouraged them to get back to playing Junction City volleyball.”

The Lady Jays play in a tournament at William Chrisman High School in  the Kansas City area on Saturday.

A’s edge Kansas City in 11 innings

By GIDEON RUB

OAKLAND, Calif. (AP) — Mark Canha knew it was just a matter of time before the right pitch would come. He waited, and his patience paid off.

Canha hit an RBI double with two outs in the 11th inning and the Oakland Athletics edged the Kansas City Royals 1-0 Wednesday to hold their lead atop the AL wild-card race.

The Athletics, who have won seven of eight, began the day two games ahead of Tampa Bay for the top wild-card spot. Cleveland was a half-game behind the Rays.

Canha was sitting on a hard sinker down and away that he’d seen Royals reliever Jesse Hahn use effectively.

“I was expecting it early,” Canha said. “He mixed in a couple of sliders and I finally got the pitch I was looking for.”

Canha connected on the fifth pitch of the at-bat, driving a 1-2 sinker down the right field line.

The A’s gave away Mark Canha T-shirts that he saw fans waving in the outfield during the game.

“It was a fun day,” Canha said. “I couldn’t have written a better story myself.”

Starters Homer Bailey of the A’s and Danny Duffy of the Royals each pitched seven sharp innings. Bailey, who was traded from Kansas City to Oakland in July, allowed three hits and struck out 11 while Duffy gave up two hits and fanned six.

Lady Jay players played in a mixture of singles and doubles positions on the day.  Other players participating in the event for Junction City High School were Krysta Talley, Sierra Stage, Juliauna Throckmorton and Elyse Nguyen.

Manhattan won the event with 11 wins, followed by Washburn Rural (9), Marysville (3) and Junction City (1).  The Lady Jays next travel to Olathe Northwest for a quadrangular on Thursday, September 19.  Matches will be played at the College Boulevard Activity Center and will start at 3 pm.
