Lady Jays Defeat Highland Park

The Junction City Lady Jay softball team completed a doubleheader sweep of Highland Park with a 15-9 win in the capitol city Wednesday evening.

Junction City won the first game of the doubleheader last week, and were ahead 8-7 in the top of the fourth inning of the second game when the contest had to be halted due to rain. The team then had to return on Wednesday to finish the game.

Junction City will play in a regional tournament next week.

Blue Jays Sweep Highland Park

The Junction City Blue Jays put together two strong games enroute to a doubleheader sweep of Highland Park in baseball at Rathert Field Wednesday night.

The Blue Jays won 16-1 in four innings and 17-7 in five innings.

Junction City coach Pat Stivers liked what he saw from his team after a split in a doubleheader with Manhattan on Tuesday. “Curious to see how focused we were going to be today, but we came out ready to play and took advantage of some errors on the other side. But for the most part I thought our kids came to the ballpark ready to play today.”

The Blue Jays, 13-7, now await their postseason regional tournament pairings. Those come out on Saturday.

Royals Cruise by Orioles

BALTIMORE (AP) — The Kansas City Royals have taken a 10-run, first-inning lead over the Baltimore Orioles after hitting four homers before making an out.

The brunt of the Royals’ outburst at Camden Yards came against Dylan Bundy, who yielded seven runs without retiring a single batter.

After Jon Jay hit a leadoff single, Jorge Soler, Mike Moustakas and Salvador Perez connected in succession.

Bundy then walked the next two batters before Alex Gordon hit a shot over the right-field wall to end Bundy’s outing.

Mike Wright and gave up a single before the ninth batter, Ryan Goins, flied out. The crowd responded with a mock cheer.

All told, the Royals had nine hits in the inning and tied a club record with four homers.

Baltimore entered the game with a six-game losing streak. Reinstated from the disabled list before the game, Orioles second baseman Jonathan Schoop said, “I hope we can start a winning streak, turn it around today.”

Lady Jay Softball Falls to Manhattan

The Junction City Lady Jays fell to Manhattan in softball 15-0 in three innings and 9-4 in a full seven-inning contest.

The Lady Jays will travel to Topeka today to complete a game suspended by weather last week. Junction City leads 8-7 in the top of the fourth inning against Highland Park.

Blue Jays Split in Baseball with Manhattan

The Junction City Blue Jays and Manhattan Indians split their baseball doubleheader Tuesday at Rathert Field.

Behind the pitching of Thane McDaniel, the Blue Jays ( 11-7 ) defeated the Indians 5-2 in game one. McDaniel went six and two-thirds innings on the mound. And he made a stellar defensive stop at shortstop in the seventh inning to help prevent a Manhattan run from scoring.

Ashton Wiegand also had a big game for Junction City when he collected three hits and scored two runs.

In game two Manhattan ( 13-7 ) defeated Junction City 4-2.

K-State baseball coach Brad Hill to step down after season

MANHATTAN, Kan. (AP) — Kansas State baseball coach Brad Hill will step down after this season as the school’s winningest coach, ending a tenure that includes four NCAA regional appearances and a Super Regional berth.

Wildcats athletic director Gene Taylor announced Hill’s decision in a statement Tuesday.

Hill has 463 wins since taking over in 2004, including a school-record 45 wins during a breakthrough 2013 season. The Wildcats won their first conference championship since 1933 before coming within a game of making the College World Series for the first time.

Hill has had 58 players selected in the Major League Baseball draft, including 46 with Kansas State, and has a career record of 964-530-3 with stops at the Division II and junior college levels.

Taylor said a national coaching search will begin immediately.

Stone Cold Foxes Win!
