Royals Get First Series Sweep of Season

Peterson Monument

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — Jarrod Dyson will be receiving a text from catcher and former Kansas City Royals teammate Drew Butera.

“I’m going to tell him, ‘that what speed do,'” Butera quipped.

Butera hit a tiebreaking, three-run inside-the-park home run when center fielder Jake Cave failed in his attempt to make a diving catch in the seventh inning, and the Kansas City Royals beat Minnesota 5-3 on Sunday to take three in a row from the Twins and complete their first series sweep in a year.

Waved home by third-base coach Mike Jirschele, Butera slid in ahead of second baseman Brian Dozier’s throw for the first inside-the-park-homer by a Royals catcher since Brent Mayne on Sept. 22, 1991. The 97th inside-the-park homer in Royals history was the first since Jarrod Dyson’s on July 8, 2015.

“I’ll add it to a list of really weird things I’ve done in my career,” Butera said.

Kansas City had not swept a series since last July 24-26 at Detroit, part of a nine-game winning streak. The Royals, who are 30-68, matched their longest winning streak of the season at three games.

Royals Obtain Goodwin in Trade with Nationals

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — Outfielder Brian Goodwin has been acquired by the Kansas City Royals from the Washington Nationals for minor league pitcher Jacob Condra-Bogan.

The 27-year-old Goodwin hit .200 with three homers and 12 RBIs in 48 games for the Nationals this season. He bruised his left wrist diving for a ball and did not play from April 15 until May 15, when he had two at-bats. He went back on the disabled list, returned June 1 and is hitting .171 (7 for 41) since.

Condra-Bogan, 23, went 1-1 with a 2.08 ERA in 16 relief outings with Lexington of the South Atlantic League and one appearance with Wilmington of the Carolina League, also Class A.

Brigade Win the Mid Plains League

The Junction City Brigade defeated the Topeka Golden Giants 4-2 at Jerry Robertson Field in the capitol city Saturday night to claim the Brett Cowdin Memorial Cup Championship for the Mid Plains League.

Junction City rallied from a 2-0 deficit in the 8th inning to get the win. The Brigade scored three runs in the eighth with the go-ahead run coming when Blake Burrows walked, scoring Trae McDaniel. The Brigade had the bases loaded at the time.  In the ninth inning Junction City tacked on another run when McDaniel singled, scoring Will Jordan.

For the Brigade this is their third league championship in the Mid Plains League over the last five seasons. They were Cowdin Cup champions in 2014 and 2016. The Golden Giants were the champions in 2017.

The Brigade finished the season with a final record of 26-9.

Brigade Tie the Series

Brigade Head Coach Derek Francis

The Junction City Brigade rallied from a 2-0 deficit in the fourth inning to defeat the Topeka Golden Giants 7-4 in game two of the Cowdin Cup finals for the Mid Plains League championship. The series is now tied 1-1, with the deciding game three Saturday night at Lake Shawnee in Topeka. Game time will be 7 p.m.

In their win Friday night the Brigade got a standout pitching performance by Nate McBroom, who went seven and two-thirds innings on the mound before departing with two outs in the eighth inning and Junction City leading 7-2. The Golden Giants scored two runs in the eighth and had two on base in the ninth before the Brigade closed out the win.

Derek Francis, Junction City coach, said that was about as good as he had seen McBroom perform this summer. “The cool thing was he was on short rest. We wanted to pitch count him a little bit, but he started cruising and he wanted the baseball.” McBroom was pitching on three days rest.

Junction City got doubles from Carson Sader, Tanner Holen and Grant Goldston enroute to the win.

The Golden Giants won game one of the series Thursday night 3-2.
